Prologue
Even though society is becoming more aware of mental health issues, many people are still going through everyday life with undiagnosed and untreated mental disorders. Those who are diagnosed with a mental disorder are often frowned upon and looked at as an outcast. Many people suffer in silence without even knowing why they are suffering. When it comes to mental health, there are several different types of disorders; I will be focusing on depression because that is the area where I have the most experience. When I say experience, I’m talking about straight-up hands-on: face-to-face, hand-to-hand combat experience baby! I am a soldier; I am a survivor! I have stepped on the battlefield fighting depression tooth and nail for many years.
For me, depression was like a mean bully; I never liked bullies! Similar to a bully: depression catches people at their weakest, most vulnerable moments, kicks you when you’re down, and tries its best to steal your joy and decrease the quality of your entire life. After getting my ass kicked by depression for so long, I finally decided to stand up for myself and fight back! I had gotten to a point where I was tired of being victimized by depression. I was tired of not being able to enjoy my life. At this point in my life, I refuse to let anyone or anything steal my joy and decrease the quality of my life. I kicked this bully’s ass, and now I’m on a mission to help others kick depression’s ass as well. In this book, I will discuss various causes of depression, and a few methods and strategies that helped me fight depression and go from victim to victorious.
Introduction
––––––––
Even though I am now in the 40 and up club, I can remember it like it was yesterday. It was the summer of 1997, I had just graduated from high school, and most of my friends and classmates either had excellent paying jobs or were preparing to go to college. It seemed like everyone’s future was looking bright except mine. My girlfriend at the time had left me for an older guy that had way more money than me. I had no money, no job, and no car. I felt like such a loser because I was dirt broke!
I started selling crack and weed to supplement my income. Although the fast money was addictive and very enticing, I felt so conflicted because I was not raised around that type of environment. Selling drugs allowed me to purchase a car, new clothes, jewelry, and the ladies started to notice me. To outsiders looking in,
