Sri Parbrahman
PRATAH- SAMARANA – STOTRAM
A Morning Prayer by Sri Adi Shankaracharya
This prayer has stanzas three,
In which dedicated does be,
The mind, the spirit and body,
Of individual to Supreme clearly.
First thoughts, words, actions daily,
Exert great influence on life surely,
If consecrated and made divine be,
Paves path for spiritual luminosity.
The prayer at dawn is profoundly,
Significant as it ever dawning be,
As it is the outer symbol certainly,
Of individual’s inner awakening be.
Essence of Advaita-Vedánta set be,
Illuminated is the ultimate Reality,
Of existence-consciousness-bliss be,
Of and beyond experiences three.
Brahman eludes categorization clearly,
It not within the limits of ideas, words be,
Individual ‘Atma’ non-different from it be,
Confused it not with the mind or body.
Elements constituting world are illusory,
Appearances on the very basic Reality,
As a snake may projections as rope be,
As the light dawns, illusions vanish fully.

At dawn I evoke the Self – the Reality,
It ever is shining in my heart brilliantly,
Existence-consciousness-happiness be,
Goal of Param-sannyasins sages surely.
That which knows always the states truly,
Of dream, waking and deep-sleep wholly,
That Brahman which without division be,
Not the five elements making this body.

At dawn I praise unattainable certainly,
Which by mind and speech not got be,
But by the grace it but unquestionably,
Of which all the words ever glowing be.
That by which scriptures declaring be,
Through words `not this', `not this' truly,
That God of gods, they say categorically,
Is unborn and un-changing perpetually.

At dawn I Salute That Darkness truly,
Which nature of Supreme Illumination be,
Which full and the Primordial abode be,
Called Purushottam - Supreme Almighty.
In Whom this World is settled endlessly,
And from beginning of creation surely,
And this endless World a delusion be,
As a Snake of the rope but mistakenly.
