      The meaning of the name Durgā

      In Mundamālā Tantra the meaning of the word Durgāa is given as such

      दुर्गो दैत्ये महाविघ्ने भवबन्धे कुकर्मणि

      शोके दुखे च नरके यमदण्डे च जन्मनि

      महाभये च रोगे चाप्याशब्दो हन्तृवाचक:

      एतान्हन्त्येव या देवी सा दुर्गा परिकीर्तिता

      durgo daitye mahāvighne bhavabandhe kukarmaṇi

      śoke dukhe ca narake yamadaṇḍe ca janmani

      mahābhaye ca roge cāpyāśabdo hantṛvācaka:

      etānhantyeva yā devī sā durgā parikīrtitā

      The word 'durga' refers to demon, big obstacles and hindrances, bondage of worldliness (samsaara), bad deeds, sorrow, pain, hell, punishment of Yama (the god of death), birth, great fears, diseases.
