    8 Stages of Psychosocial Development

    We learn in psychology that there are 8 recognized stages of psychosocial development.  Erik Homburger Erikson was a German-American developmental psychologist who came up with the stages and observed how people work through the different stages.  He had failed to work successfully through some of the stages early in life due to being an outcast, thus he had experienced the various stages from an intuitive and introspective sense.

    An individual can sway one way or the other on each of the spectrums within each of the 8 stages below during his or her personal growth.  One end of the spectrum on each stage is the healthy side of the spectrum, whereas the opposite side of the spectrum on that particular stage is the toxic and unhealthy side of the spectrum.

    Stage 1 – The infant must resolve whether or not he or she trusts the world and those in the immediate environment.  An infant who is cared for adequately will learn to trust.  An infant who is ignored, neglected, abused, or intermittently cared for will develop distrust.  This stage can either instill hope in the infant that the world is a positive place to be, or it can instill despair in the
