WholeLIFE Coaching Guidebook - W. Jared DuPree PHD
Chapter 1:
Introduction to WholeLIFE Coaching
Welcome! This WholeLIFE Coaching Guide is designed for those that have completed either WholeFIT Level 1 & 2 trainings, WholeHEART trainings, WholeSPIRIT trainings or are in the process of receiving this training. If you are not familiar with these trainings, this coaching guide can still be useful for you as coach, consultant, provider, or helping professional. Because this coaching guide assumes you are engaging in either WholeFIT, WholeHEART, or WholeSPIRIT training, I won’t be reviewing the history, evidence, research, or background of our approach. In addition, I will do my best to review and summarize key points from the training, but this guide will not be a comprehensive review of the training. Rather, this guide is designed for you to use as a help-meet
as you work with clients/patients (I will be using the term clients from this point forward).
I do want to thank you for having the courage to work with clients. Its quite a big endeavor and I know what is like to be in the trenches of a helping profession. You are often overlooked, underappreciated, and unsupported. I want you to know I am grateful for you. I appreciate you and want to support you, in part, with this coaching guide. Thank you for your work, heart, and love!
In this chapter, we will review some key points and principles to help you in your coaching work including the following:
•What is Coaching?
•What is WholeLIFE’s approach to Coaching?
•What is the WholeLIFE framework?
•What is the WholeLIFE process to coaching?
What is Coaching?
Coaching is such a broad term these days and it seems like everyone is a coach. Because most states have very little or no regulation around coaching, anyone can become a coach. You can put up a shingle today and start a coaching business with no training. There are definitely pros and cons to this. So, what is coaching? I offer the following definition based on WholeFIT’s view of coaching:
Coaching is the process of guiding and facilitating a change process for an individual, couple, group, and/or organization utilizing effective assessment and intervention tools and methods.
It is important to note that coaching differentiates from counseling, therapy, and other licensed professions in the following ways:
Ethical Reminders
•Coaches should not diagnose or treat a diagnosis.
•Coaches should not directly treat trauma.
•Coaches should work closely with other providers (therapists, doctors, etc.).
•Coaches should not use interventions that are specifically designed for licensed professionals.
•Coaches will maintain confidentiality.
•Coaches will report to the necessary agencies or organizations as needed for abuse, neglect, and safety concerns as
