    Introduction

Congratulations on purchasing Managing Anxiety and Stress as an Adult: Understanding and Dealing with Your Emotions written by Z.Slator and thank you for doing so.

The word anxiety can make your stomach tense. Think about this. You’re the new person at your job. Only a couple of weeks in, and your boss comes up to you to ask you to give a presentation at the next board meeting. Aside from all of those years in school when you had to give oral reports, this will be the first major presentation you’ve given.

You have two weeks to get everything together. When not working on your everyday tasks, you work on the presentation. You finish it up a couple of days before, but you are still worried that it’s not good enough, so you work through it a few more times before you have to give the presentation. Mere moments before you are to speak, you find yourself in the bathroom trying to hype yourself up. Your mouth is dry. Your stomach is in knots. Your hands are sweaty. You’ve felt better while fighting the flu. Then your boss calls your name.

You trudge into the boardroom and give your presentation. Amazingly, you make it through it without passing out. Everybody seems pretty impressed by your work, so you leave the meeting feeling pretty good about yourself.

At the beginning of this scenery, you were experiencing anxiety. Do you think that anxiety served you in the long run, or was it problematic?

The following chapters will discuss stress and anxiety and what roles they play in your life. Stress and anxiety are going to happen in life. Sometimes, they don’t have a negative impact on you and simply get you and your body ready for what’s to come. Other times, they become disordered. That’s when you have a problem.

That’s what this book is going to deal with. We will go over things that you can do to help deal with anxiety and stress that have gotten out of hand. When these feelings run rampant in your life, it’s easy to feel as though there is no hope for a better day. However, if you learn the right tools to manage these things, a better day is possible.

First, we’ll look at anxiety and its purpose in your life. This section will also go over what triggers are and some practices for dealing with anxiety.

Next, we’ll go over what stress is and its purpose. We’ll look at how to know when stress has gotten out of hand and what you can do to wrangle it back in check.

Then the last section will deal with the action steps you can take every day to deal with stress and anxiety on a regular basis. This will include practices for dealing with daily life, relationships, habits, time management, and those dreaded bad days.

There are plenty of books on this subject on the market; thanks again for choosing this one! Every effort was made to ensure it was full of as much useful information as possible. Please enjoy!

Chapter 1: Who This Book Is For

Stress and anxiety can wreak havoc in your life. It wasn’t that long ago when I found myself searching for new excuses to tell my friends that I could go out. It wasn’t that I actually couldn’t. I just didn’t want to leave my house because of the anxiety I always felt when I was somewhere new.

That’s not a great way to live your life. It causes you to feel lonely, and eventually, your friends may stop asking you to join them. We all experience stress and anxiety from time to time, but when it takes over your life, it’s got to go.

Now, I want to set you guys straight right from the start. This book isn’t some miracle drug that’s going to make everything right in the world. Too many people make big promises with their products that just one use, and everything will be magically right. That’s not how the world works, unfortunately. If it was, then we wouldn’t need people to help teach us how to do certain things.

However, what I can promise you is that this book will teach you ways to lower the stress and anxiety in your life if you use the practices we’ll go over. Reading this book won’t be enough to fix your problems. You will have to take actions steps towards improving your life and mental health, but I will try to make those action steps as simple as possible.

I chose to set out on this journey of writing this book because I wanted to help people like me. Those who have faced the darkest depths of anxiety and stress. Those who haven’t gotten to enjoy their life because their brain won’t shut up long enough for them to do something fun.

Have you ever known what it feels like to be sitting in the movie theater with your friends and not be able to focus on the movie because your mind keeps you distracted? You all leave the theater. Your friends are talking about what they liked about the movie. How this one guy did something amazing, and then turn to you and ask, So what did you think? The truth would be, I don’t know. I didn’t hear a single word anybody said on the screen. However, you can’t say that, so what do you say? Oh, it was good. I liked it. That seems to appease them, but you’re still secretly hoping they don’t ask you another question.

I’ve been there before. Not only was my anxiety preventing me from enjoying the movie or whatever activity was partaking in, but the after-activity banter created more anxiety. None of this was my friend's fault. They didn’t know I was preoccupied with my thoughts. I was definitely not in the right headspace to say anything to them about it because I didn’t want to seem like a bother.

Stress and anxiety are like a pair of cheap sunglasses. You couldn’t get rid of them even if you wanted to. However, you can learn how to make them less of a nuisance.  You can learn how to spot them before they grab hold of your brain and pull you back under the covers.

So, if you’re like me and have ever missed out on the fun in your life, then you may just find something in this book that can help you out.

We don’t have to be stuck anymore. We can
