There is evidence that a plant-based diet could have huge effects on both your health and your athletic abilities. For example, Rich Roll, a popular plant-based athlete, was once a top swimmer at Stanford University, but he collapsed in pain while trying to ascend a staircase, fearing a heart attack was near. He decided to become healthy and happy, and since then he has transformed his life.

Rich Roll, an ultra-endurance athlete, was able to transform his body into a plant-powered machine by eating a nutrient-rich, calorie-poor diet. He was able to lose weight, which made exercise easier and more enjoyable for him.

The place to begin when it comes to understanding macro and micronutrients is with understanding calorie density. This will influence which plant-based foods you eat as well as how much and in what ratio.

Robert, who had been a vegan since his teens, got into bodybuilding. He was still thinking like a runner, burning far more calories than he was consuming in order to build muscle. His diet and goals were at odds with each other.
