Chapter 1: Lay The Foundation
Create A Solid Traffic Strategy That Is Tailored To Your Niche
We'll be looking at some of the most powerful and effective growth hacks in the industry over the course of this book.
These are simple strategies that have been shown on numerous occasions to help any site's growth trajectory: to help it gain more visitors, earn more money, and expand its reach much faster than it would by using purely conventional means.
As we will see, there are a plethora of these growth hacks available, and many of them can be extremely successful.
However, growth hacks do not result in successful businesses. Growth hacks will not work if a solid foundation is not already in place.
It is a mistake to approach any endeavor – especially business – with the expectation of 'hacking' your way to success. Websites do not receive millions of visitors in a single day. Instead, most successful websites are the result of months, if not years, of consistent effort.
All of the world's most famous websites began where you are now. The difference between those who have succeeded and those who have failed is that they put in consistent effort, provided consistent value, and did not give up when things did not go their way.
Growth hacks provide small bursts of extra traffic and help to accelerate things. But the most important aspect of your success is the foundation. Don't put too much emphasis on getting traffic quickly. Concentrate on moving slowly through traffic.
The Most Important Factor: A Great Website
Let's begin with the most important factor: having a great website.
There is no getting around it. If you want to increase your traffic and success, you must have a great website that people want to visit.
That's the only way they'll return, and it's the only way they'll want to help you by sharing your site.
So, what factors contribute to a great website? The first requirement is that you provide value. That means they must receive something in exchange for visiting your website, most likely entertainment or information.
That means you can't 'do it half-assed.' That means you can't sit back and think it's okay to churn out low-quality garbage and expect people to flock to your site.
That may appear to be self-evident, but it is frequently overlooked. You'd be surprised how many people will create a website where they share fitness advice despite knowing nothing about fitness.
And you'd be surprised how few care about the quality of the content on the site or how the people who read it feel.
These are the people who hire writers for the cheapest price possible. These writers are frequently from other countries and have little knowledge of the subject they are writing about.
Or they create their own content by simply copying the successful posts they see on other sites and filling out all of the 'standard posts' they believe every site in that niche requires.
If it's a fitness site, that could mean they make a few posts about working out each body part and be done with it.
Then they're surprised that their traffic doesn't increase.
But the reason is obvious: they don't offer anything worthwhile or unique in comparison to the other sites in that niche. They don't give their visitors a reason to return, and they don't give their visitors a reason to share the content with others.
In short, they don't care about the posts they make, and the quality of their content reflects this.
You must not only show that you care, but also make it known. Furthermore, you must demonstrate that your site is exciting in other ways. You must demonstrate that it serves a purpose, has a target audience, and so on.
That entails creating a logo and a strong brand. It entails giving that brand a tagline and developing a website to tie everything together.
You now have a website that screams value and should appeal to a specific target audience. If you can promote it properly, you'll be surprised at how much of an impact it can have on your success.
People follow, read, and share websites that provide something new, give them something to care about, and are built with genuine passion and effort.
Optimization
Having a great site in place will help you attract and retain visitors. Regularly updating it and filling it with high-quality content will keep them reading and help turn them into fans who are genuinely enthusiastic about your brand.
But just because value and quality trump marketing doesn't mean you can avoid any marketing at all!
