Chapter 1
Diversification (SEO, Social Media, non obvious sources)
Here are some basic facts to start. Your website can gain traffic from different sources and the number of sources is increasing every month. One of the most basic sources of traffic in the Google Analytics tool is called DIRECT.
Direct
The easiest way to explain what this means is to say that Direct traffic arrives at your website by typing your website URL directly into Chrome or another browser. It could also be through browser bookmarks. DIRECT TRAFFIC is the most desired way to collect clicks and visits, but it can be the hardest to achieve as it has the longest strategy.
If you have direct traffic, it could mean that your website is well known, or you did a great job in marketing, so people searched for your brand. That's awesome but be ready to face the fact that since you are not a big brand you could have a problem securing direct traffic.
Here is another important point: not every click which is categorized as Direct in your Google Analytics account is actually Direct. If GA cannot recognize the true source, it will classify it in the Direct report. Some browsers can also be tricky for GA (Google does it deliberately) and the traffic which is in fact SEARCH is being classified as Direct. This can be misleading.
Search
In a natural way, we mentioned search traffic. Every time you hear someone talking about SEO (search engine optimization), that is the guy who works on increasing search traffic. Later, we will talk about how to properly establish SEO and why we do not need to listen to everything that Google is telling us.
For years, search traffic has been desired because searching online for stories was the most popular way to find information. SEO became a huge branch of the digital industry. For many it is the way of life. SEO-lovers spend all day using analytical tools and measuring positions, which are moving up and down all the time. Once upon a time, SEO was disregarded, later it became a sought after career and some Universities around the world began teaching engine optimization courses. Nowadays, it is still vital, but we ought to remember that algorithms are changing frequently, so usually knowledge from universities will not be enough.
