About this ebook

There was a time when author Ash Adams didn’t know God. It was a long time, more than half of her life. In Lambent Light, she shares her story, showing how blind she was to God. She was indifferent to his existence.

Adams tells how when she became a Christ follower, she discovered, with hindsight, that God had been at work in events she had kept secret because she couldn’t explain them. She harbored the secrets because she didn’t want people to think she was over-spiritual or in need of attention. Through the years, she recognized these secrets need to be told to encourage others to share their experiences.

In Lambent Light, she exposes her “God incidences,” helping others acknowledge and be more aware of God’s hand in their lives. Through her testimony, Adams wants all to see the lambent light that is always around us.

    ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

Let me first remember that this was produced in God’s strength, and for that I give Him my praise and thanks. I extend a huge thank you to Stephanie Erickson, author of over twenty books, who encouraged me so much with my initial pamphlet draft. Because of her, this book has grown. Further cause for thanks is Ruth Buchanan, author and teacher now teaching others to write through Buildabetterus.com.

I am thankful for all the helpful comments from all my Beta readers.

    INTRODUCTION

    Dear Reader,

You are holding a book that is precious because it has a purpose. If this was a biography, it would be much longer; nevertheless, I have included much of my background to tell the story, so that you may get to know me and understand me better.

This book shows how God was always in my life—I was just too blind to see. I want most of all to encourage every reader to stop and look for that same lambent light that is always around me and you. It took me a long time to see that light, and maybe I can help you to be more observant than I was.

The book tells of how I lived as a child and kept secrets, how I lived and worked as an adult and kept secrets, and how God held me through it all. It is not easy to expose things that I chose to keep private, even though I now have an explanation for many of the events that happened and that seemed weird to me at the time. Some were not good, but just because I am writing about them makes them no worse. We all know we cannot undo the past, but we can stop bad memories from taking up residence in our minds, and adversely affecting our present and our future. We can choose. We sometimes give too little credit to the power of our minds. We can dwell on the past or choose to see the joys of life. Our thoughts make all the difference, but those of us who are Christ-followers also have the help of the Holy Spirit and the strength of God. Our real power comes from God.

Thank you for choosing this book. My prayer is that God’s hand guided you to it because He wants you to see the lambent light.

    CHAPTER 1

    As you enter these memories

There was a time when I did not know God. It was a long time. It was a very long time—more than half my life. There was also a time when I had never heard the word lambent. This adjective describes a light or fire that is glowing or flickering with a soft radiance. As soon as I heard it, the word grabbed my attention. The more I thought about it, the more I saw that God is our lambent light: glowing, gleaming, or flickering, with that soft radiance.

Bathed in this light, I feel warm and safe.

Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life’ (John 8:12). This scripture is very familiar, and I now read it with the awareness that God is my lambent light. I especially note the words will not walk in darkness. Because this lambent light is always there, we can have the opportunity to never walk in darkness if only we would accept God’s gift.

However, I can see that God used stronger beams of light to try to make me notice Him. It was as if He was sending rays of light from a lighthouse to direct my path. I didn’t even notice. As I said, it took a while. True to His word in Jeremiah, God had plans for me, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope (Jeremiah 29:11). These words are often quoted, and they speak of God’s wisdom and encouragement to us.Through Jeremiah, God was talking to the Israelites and teaching them of His plans for their nation. He was repeating His promise to them. They were descendants of Abraham, with whom God had made a covenant, and God was not going to break His side of this bargain. Of course, the covenant foretells of the coming of Jesus. When scriptures become as familiar as this one, we can deduce their full meaning. God has indeed made plans for each of us.

In this book, you will find a collection of God stories. These stories are experiences in which God was clearly in control, and sometimes the only explanation for why things happened the way that they did.

As I have said, there was no visible bright, flashing light accompanying each event. In retrospect, I now see that these experiences acted as guiding lights as if from a lighthouse, leading me away from the rocks and toward a safe harbor. That was then. Now I have God as a permanent lambent light around me, and I sense that is exactly how He asks us to be around each other.

As you enter these memories, you will perhaps notice and develop a sense of that lambent light. That is my hope.
