    CRASH!

    BANG!

    WHACK!

What now, thought Mum as she dropped the cup-cakes she was icing and sprinted to the lounge.

What on earth were the kids up to?

A bum greeted her high in the air and the rest of Chloe was obviously under the couch. The coffee table was lying on its side and the lamp lay smashed on the floor.

Mum drew a deep breath and thought - count to ten.

'What are you doing?' She yelled at her with her hands high on her hips as she stood over Chloe's bum.

'My tooth, my tooth came out and it rolled and went right across the lounge and under the couch,' came a stifled reply.

'You didn't have any loose teeth,' Mum replied.

'I did, it just wasn't quite ready. We used Dad's pliers to pull it out, that's what broke the lamp.'

Mum glanced at the floor and there lying in the corner of the room were her husband's dirty old pliers.

She sighed and thought, these kids would be the death of me.

'What on earth possessed you to pull out a tooth?' she asked trying to stay calm. It was her favourite lamp that lay shattered on the floor.

'Billy Baldtalk says that the Tooth Fairy is paying five dollars at the moment. He lost a tooth last week and he's been skiting about how he gets more money than anyone else.'

Mum sighed. Here we go again, she thought.

'I've told you before - the Tooth Fairy only gives one dollar for a small tooth and two dollars for a molar.'

'Well, I want five dollars. I need five dollars,' she replied as she wriggled out from under the couch.

Ben poked his head up from behind it. 'Did you find it?'

'Sure did,' replied Chloe as she sat up and held it high. Grinning like a cat that had got the cream.

'Mum, I need the Tooth Fairy to give me five dollars because I want to buy something.'

'Oh,' replied Mum. 'What do you want to buy?'

'It's your birthday soon and rather than making something for you. I want to buy you something this year.'

'You don't have to buy me anything, I love your drawings,' replied Mum.

'I'm buying you something with the five dollars I get from the Tooth Fairy.'

'I wouldn't bet on the Tooth Fairy bringing you five dollars,' replied Mum as she walked over and righted the table and started pushing the remnants of the lamp together with her foot.

'Go get me the hearth brush and shovel. I'll clean up this mess.'

'Right after I've put my tooth in a glass of water and put it on the window sill,' replied Chloe as she scurried towards the kitchen to get the glass.

Mum yelled after her, 'Leave it on the kitchen window sill, that's the only place the Tooth Fairy knows where to come.'

Five dollars, thought Mum. Hmm, how many teeth has she got left?

'Here's the broom and shovel and a plastic bag,' announced Chloe as she strutted back in grinning from ear to ear and showing Mum it was a front tooth that she had lost.

'Go and clean your mouth out. God knows what bugs you might have caught off Dad's old oily pliers. Grab them and return them to where you got them from in the garage. Then get ready for bed.'

'Okay', came the reply as she did what she was asked to do.

Within half an hour the kids were both in bed. Mum did a few chores and then crawled into bed herself. Dad was away on a business trip and due back soon.

'MUM!' Mum woke with a jolt. All she could hear was her name being screamed out by Chloe.

    'What?' Mum yelled back.

    'Quick, come here.'

Mum crawled out of bed, put her dressing gown on and slippers and padded her way into the kitchen.

'Look,' said Chloe excitedly as she pointed to the glass on the window sill.

Mum's eyes opened wide, she'd forgotten all about the Tooth Fairy and the tooth but Chloe hadn't.

'I got a note,' said Chloe as she waved it in her hand. 'And my tooth is still in the glass.'

'Oh,' was Mum's reply as she eyed up the note that was moving at a hundred miles an hour back and forth as Chloe waved it and the glass with the water and the tooth in it. Water sloshed everywhere.

    Mum was stunned.

'What's the note say?' she asked trying to get Chloe to calm down.

'You read it. I'm only seven Mum, you know I can't read that well yet,' with that she shoved it into Mum's hands.

'Right!' said Mum. She was most surprised.

She quickly unfolded it and scanned the page with her eagle eyes.

'Well,' demanded Chloe as she jumped up and down with delight.

    Dear Chloe,

I am sorry there is no money for you today. You see I got my pushbike out to deliver your money and pick up your tooth and I had such an awful time; my chain broke on the way and I couldn't make it. I shall try again tomorrow.

    Regards,

    The Tooth Fairy

    Mum looked very surprised.

Chloe snatched the note and ran off to Ben, yelling gleefully at the top of her voice.

'I got a note from the Tooth Fairy come and see!'

She and Ben just about collided as he was running from his room to see what all the commotion was about.

'I got a note from the Tooth Fairy - Billy can't beat that one! I can't wait till Monday to push this under his nose and go beat that!'

    Ben snatched it from her.

'Wow, that's worth a fortune. The Tooth Fairy wrote a note!'

'I can't wait till tonight maybe she'll come and leave me another one,' said Chloe her eyes were the size of saucers by this stage.

Ben said, 'We could write her a note.'

'YES!' squealed Chloe. 'Quick we need paper and pencils.'

And so, it began, Mum spent the day watching and helping the two of them write note after note until they settled on the final version.

Mum had to grin it was the simplest one they'd written.

    Dear Tooth Fairy,

    We loved your note.

    Chloe and Ben

That night the kids were so excited. It was hard for Mum to get them into bed let alone to go to sleep. Finally, after three attempts Mum roared and said, 'Enough, get to bed. She won't come if you are up all night, she only comes when everyone is asleep.'

With that they disappeared and stayed in their beds for the rest of the night. At first light, they were both up. Once again Mum got woken to screams of delight from the kitchen except this time both of them shouting.

Mum plodded out to the kitchen.

'Read it Mum, read it for us,' they both chanted.

    Dear Chloe and Ben,

I'm so sorry I didn't leave you any money again. After my pushbike broke down I spent the whole day fixing it and I

tried to come but this time I got a flat tyre and I didn't have a puncture repair kit with me so I shall try to come tomorrow.

    Regards

    The Tooth Fairy.

'Wow, we got another note, this is so cool. She got a flattie I hope she can fix it by tonight,' cooed Chloe.

'This is so cool, she's writing us notes! And a smudgy picture!' said Ben as he jumped up and down with excitement.

Another day went by with the kids writing a note for the Tooth Fairy.

Mum was getting a bit worried about it all. What had happened to the Tooth Fairy?

The next morning came and both the kids were up at the crack of dawn, it was back to school today and they wanted to see if there was another note.

Again, screams of delight filled the air from the kitchen.

'Mum, come see we got another note,' yelled Chloe.

'So, you did,' said Mum as she peered over Chloe's shoulder at the note in her hand.

    Chloe handed it to Mum.

    Once more Mum read aloud,

    Dear Chloe and Ben,

I am so sorry, I gave up trying to use my pushbike and I got my motorbike out to bring you your money. I was half way to your place and I ran out of fuel. I forgot to fill it up. Perhaps I can get things sorted by tomorrow and you'll get your money.

    Regards,

    The Tooth Fairy.

'Wow,' said Cloe. This is so exciting. I have three notes now to throw under Billy's nose. This beats five dollars any day. I don't want the money. I want her to carry on bringing me notes. Ben, I've got school you are to watch this glass like a hawk.'

'No need for that,' said Mum. 'The Tooth Fairy only comes at night. Come on get your breakfast and get ready for school.'

They both scrambled to the table and gobbled up their breakfast and Chloe, after much fuss got ready for school and left Mum and Ben to get on with their day.

Ben was only four so he spent his day following Mum around and playing with his toys and eagerly waiting for night-time so the Tooth Fairy could come again.

Every time he walked past the glass on the window sill he peered eagerly at it to make sure the tooth was still there.

Chloe arrived home with a hiss and a roar.

'Hey Mum, Billy says the Tooth Fairy isn't real - it's really you.'

'No, it's not me,' said Mum. 'He's just jealous, you are getting notes and he isn't.'

'Yeah,' said Ben. 'What would Billy know, he's the school bully.'

'Go and get your homework done Chloe and I'll get dinner ready,' said Mum.

Dad got home from work late and walked in to find the three of them changing the water in the glass and making sure the tooth was sitting in the middle.

'It's got to be in the middle,' said Ben. 'That's why the magic is happening and we are getting notes.'

'I don't know about magic,' said Dad as he watched them all make a fuss over the glass.

'It's magic Dad,' said Chloe. 'I don't want any money I just want the notes.'

So, another night came and went and the next morning the

house was filled with screams of delight.

'Another note Mum, quick read it to us.'

Mum plodded into the kitchen again.

    Dear Chloe and Ben.

I am very embarrassed seems my transport is letting me down at the moment. I filled the motorbike up with petrol and within a block of your house, low and behold it started back firing and doing crazy things. I had to leave it on the side of the road. I shall spend the day sorting my transport out and will see you tomorrow.

    Regards,

    The Tooth Fairy.

Mum raised her eyebrows. The kids were over the moon that they'd had another note and smudgy picture.

They were grabbing it off each other and jumping up and down.

'Wow wee, we got another note!' yelled Chloe.

Ben was busy doing his own wee dance by now.

'That's enough,' cried Mum. She could hardly be heard over them. Time to get ready for school,' said Mum. With

that she hurriedly threw some breakfast together and that seemed to calm them down.

Nothing quite like a full tummy, thought Mum.

Chloe's last words to Ben were as she went out the door was, 'Guard that glass, Ben.'

Ben bit his lip. His eyes danced from side to side, like his brain was on high speed. His feet wiggled from side to side. He had a job and that was to guard the glass and watch for the Tooth Fairy.

He quickly ran into the lounge and grabbed his table and chair and dragged it into the kitchen so he could draw all day and keep an eye on the magical glass.

He'd decided by now it was magical, how else would a glass bring notes from the Tooth Fairy.

Mum had other ideas on how to tackle it all. She'd wait till Dad got home and run it by him. The day dragged, nothing happened.

Chloe came home from school excited, seemed she was topping the popularity list with her school friends, except for Billy. He was fuming that she had something he didn't.

    The afternoon passed
