    Mr Dudley

    and

    the

    Time Vampires

    1

Mr Dudley slowly opened his eyes one at a time and blinked a few times and yawned. It might have looked like he'd been asleep but he'd been working his heinie off.

He stretched his arms out and then lifted and stretched each leg, wiggling his toes as he did so. His tweed trousers rode up his leg to reveal his old tattered stomping boots and holey grey socks that poked out the top.

He swung to the right of his chair and leapt off it, landing soundly, he hobbled off the platform his seat was on. He looked back at the dream machine and shook his head.

Magnificent machine, he'd helped to design it when they'd discovered that dreamland had problems. The machine scaled the height of the room and tapered off into the peak of the lighthouse. Coils upon coils of copper metal spiralled upwards and out from where his chair was. Time pieces dotted the spirals and cogs too, they would clunk and turn when he was seated and the spiral spiralled. It was a noisy machine that would clunk and let off steam at the top and honk horns at intervals.

He wasn't having a good week. In fact, his week was about to get worse. He'd been away and they'd had an intruder. They thought one baddie had slipped through from dreamland but now he wasn't so sure. Perhaps numerous characters had entered their world.

He had a feeling chaos was about to erupt. He scratched the stubble on his chin and continued to the stairwell.

He thought he'd get What's-his-name and Thingy-ma-jig to service the machine whilst he caught a bite to eat and ring Muriel. Muriel was a witch and he relied on her magic to help maintain the peace and quiet of our world.

Hmm, he wasn't happy. It was far too happy in dreamland. It was almost too happy. Like someone or something was trying to compensate for something else. They'd all been walking around with great big smiles, almost like their mouths had been pinned back to their ears. He'd stayed longer than expected as he wanted to check that all the regions were like that and they were. Everyone waving and strutting around with their incredibly big fake smiles that showed all their top teeth.

He was worried, very worried. Opening the door, he yelled, 'Thingy-ma-jig and What's-his-name, the machine needs servicing. I'm hungry, let me know when you're finished. I'll be in the kitchen.'

By now he stood in the stairwell that led either up to the balcony around the top of the lighthouse or down to the ground, where the kitchen was.

He pushed a button on the railing that sent for his chair lift.

Odd, he thought. He was the only one who used it and it should have been where he had left it. He could hear it sliding on the banister as it descended from the top.

Perhaps they'd had visitors who had taken in the views. They normally didn't let anyone into the lighthouse. Again, he rubbed his stubble, a nervous habit. One he did when something was gnawing at him.

He stared down the stairs and then upwards. Where were his assistants? They normally came prancing up to him and were jibber jabbering non-stop. Silence filled the air.

    How odd he thought.

His chair lift arrived and he slid into the seat and pushed the button controller on the arm and it slowly started descending to the bottom.

He leant back in the seat and swung his legs like a kid till he reached the bottom. It slowly ground to a halt and he slid from the chair onto the flagstone floor and hobbled off in the direction of the kitchen.

Strange, he thought. He hadn't heard the boys, they normally made noise wherever they went. The boys were mechanical beings. Built from timepieces and other bits of metal. They would clunk and creak with each step. Very unlike them to be peculiarly silent.

Mr Dudley busied himself and made a sandwich. Salami, cheese and onion onto his favourite bread with a splash of mayonnaise to tasty it up. And salt and pepper of course. He munched into his sandwich whilst he sat quite happily at the breakfast bar in his tiny kitchen.

The lighthouse seemed eerie. It was silent. There was always noise here. He couldn't even hear the sea as it beat against the rocks below.

    Odd, he thought.

Once finished he thought he'd head to the top of the lighthouse and then back to the monitoring room. Surely, they'd be in there oiling the wheels and doing any maintenance that was required.

He stuck a finger in his ear and wiggled it
