About this ebook

Throughout history lovers searched for those special foods that would help them be the best they could be. For Casanova, it was the oysters. To the ancient Egyptians it was seafood generally. So potent did they see seafood, that it was forbidden to the celibate priests in case they ceased being celibate.

In the Elizabethan times, the ladies of the red-light district believed they had the answer to turning a man on. As the client stood around kicking his heels waiting for his turn, the Madam would be circulating with a silver platter piled high with prunes, thought to be a real libido-enhancer. A handful of prunes, and by the time he took to the stairs three at a time, the timid pimply hayseed of a moment ago would be transformed into an Errol Flynn.

In the Medieval times witches and wizards used pine nuts to create love potions for those who felt the need for stimulation. There was even an Arabian expert who believed that to be unstoppable in bed, all you needed to do was to eat one hundred of these little nuts before you went out into the night seeking love and you were bound to come home replete.

Honey is pretty much on the list of all successful lovers, especially when combined with other sex-performance enhancers. Eggs and honey were used by ancient cultures to promote both performance and fertility, while an Arab recipe promises an unforgettable experience for the lover who prepares himself with a concoction of honey, almonds and pine nuts.

Fruit and vegetables, as love-enhancing ingredient, have a long history. Don’t both first appear in paradise?

To inspire you this book details some 100 foods, most of which you’ll find in your local supermarket, and learn why they have been named desirable foods for the active lover.

So if you’re in the mood to test the theories for a more intense and sustaining sex-life, check out some of these ancient theories, including that of Hippocrates, father of medicine, who lived to be ninety and believed a man could be virile well into old age if he ate the right food.

    ABC of Love and Health

The definition of an aphrodisiac is a food, plant, or scent that inspires romantic notions. It’s another way of saying that there are foods and smells which stimulate or increases sexual drive.

Whatever the reason, throughout history different cultures believed some foods were aphrodisiacs. According to experts, some of the foods considered as aphrodisiacs may reduce stress, uplift the mood, and energize both body and mind. But when it comes to the crunch both modern and historical experts link active sex life, including fertility, with health.

In his book, ‘The art of Love’, Ovid, the Roman poet, notes that at the bottom of healthy, sexual appetite, is good health. And good health is partly achieved through food. Other writers on the subject agree that good health, achieved through the right food, is the real aphrodisiac.

And it seems, in today’s world, good health is in short supply. According to World Health Organisation one in every four couples in developing countries had been found to be affected by infertility. And according to Medical Journal of Australia 40% of all infertility among Australian couples could be attributed to male reproductive function.

Some problems associated with both impotence and infertility is unhealthy lifestyle. This includes obesity. Apparently one third of the world population is obese, with over three million people dying of obesity each year.

The major reasons for obesity – apart from the fact of genes – is the reliance on processed foods which are often loaded with lots of fat and calories. A lot of these calories come from sugar that not only gets stored as fat, but ads to the feelig of still being hungry and wanting to eat more.

Excessive smoking and drinking are other factors that might cause infertility and impotence. Suggested remedies include regular exercise, losing weight, since extra weight involves hormonal changes that can affect semen production, cutting down on alcohol and quitting smoking. In other words, adopting a healthy lifestyle.

Here is a list of foods that at one time or another have been thought to be healthy and helpful in bedroom play, as well as some of the modern findings.

    A is for

    Almonds

Almonds have been identified as having aphrodisiac properties as far back as the Bronze Age, and often have symbolised fertility and sexual attraction. Samson is said to have courted Delilah with fragrant almond branches while Romans showered newlyweds with almonds as fertility charms.

According to Ayurveda, the traditional Indian medicine, almonds are great food for brain activity as well as helping to awaken sexual desire. Not only are the almonds considered good for your love life, their very smell is said to increase women’s sex-drive. It is also suggested as a remedy for women suffering with frigidity due to stress, mental tiredness and lack of energy.

Alexandre Dumas, writer of such famous books as ‘The Count of Monte Cristo’ and ‘The Three Musketeers’, as well as numerous plays, novels, magazine articles and travel books. is said to have prepared himself for his meeting with his mistresses by eating a good helping of almond soup. As there is a suggestion that his mistresses numbered about forty, and resulted in an unknown number of children, the consumption of almonds must have been very ongoing.

Considered the king of nuts which Arabs and Chinese have eaten for centuries to increase their sexual prowess, their fame has spread through the world and these days can be found in Iran, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Turkey, Syria, Jordan and Israel. They are rich in nutriments which are considered essential for reproductive health and for increasing sexual desire. They are also believed to be a great food for brain activity.

According to some fitness gurus a good helping of almonds four hours before blast off time boosts a man’s sex drive and sperm count.

    Using Almonds

    * There is the almond soup. Some cooks suggest before using them you should soak the almonds in water overnight. It can be a cold soup simply by processing and blending it with other ingredients. Or it can be made into a warm soup by cooking all the ingredients.

    * If being used as a smoothies, or just a healthy drink, it can be processed with fruit, cegetables, fruit juice or milk.

    * Almonds can be tossed over both vegetable or fruit salad dressing to give the salad a bit of crunch.

    * Those who like to make their own almond milk can process the nuts and blend with flavouring of their choice.

    * On the same theme, almonds can be made into almond paste or dip by processing the nuts with various herbs or spices and used as a dip or a spread.

    Angelica

Considered at one time to be one of the most powerful herbs, angelica’s name was thought to be associated with Michael the Archangel because it blooms on his feast day. Legend has it that an angel appeared to a monk in a dream, revealing to him that the plant could cure and be a defense against all sorts of ills, including the plague. The herb has forever more been called Angelica, nicknamed ‘Root of the Holy Ghost’.

While it grows wild on the coasts of the North and Baltic Seas as far north as Lapland, it is a protected species in Iceland.

Used in many pagan and Christian festivals, according to folklore in medieval times European mothers made necklaces from the angelica leaves to protect their children from illness and witchcraft.

While historically angelica was used for treating a number of problems including a variety of women’s reproductive health issues, in the nineteenth century experts encouraged women to use angelica to overcome frigidity. More recently it’s suggested that angelica provides many of the same benefits with which ginseng is reputed to provide men. Not only is it supposed to work as a feminine libido enhancer and tonic, it is also supposed to relieve PMS symptoms.
