Author

Medelia G. Jordan

As a retired educator, I have not lost my passion for helping others, especially our youth, to know God better. I spent thirty years as an educator, as well as many years in choirs and worship teams. I studied many endeavors in education, including elementary education and psychology. With five endorsements: reading, writing, science, Spanish, and music, I then furthered my education with a master's degree in science and taught science in middle school for twenty years. Bringing this education all together gives me a way to help and teach others.

    Acknowledgments

I would like to express my deepest appreciation to the following people for showing such strength and love to me. Marilyn Hickey, who is a great author and missionary, and who was a spiritual mentor to me, as well as TBN! I would like to thank my dad for showing our family academic pursuit and my mom for helping me to understand that listening and patience will create peace! I dedicate this book to my dad, who was so smart yet misunderstood, and who suffered for the cause of Christ! My mother would always want me to sit down and listen to stories, but I would not sit still. How I wish I could go back and patiently listen to her stories! Thanks to Mom for showing such courage! I would also like to thank Jeff, Jennifer, and Julia, who mean the world to me, and amidst the struggles of life, have remained true to God and have given me the inspiration to go deeper with God. We look forward, forgive, not looking to the past (which is in the sea of forgetfulness). I would also like to thank my sister and brother for helping me and giving me advice, and who understood our family struggles and are serving God as well. Last but not least, I want to thank my friends Carolyn and Marina for their encouragement and friendship. These people have all helped to shape my life, and I love them! May their gifts of love continue to inspire me to love others as well. Life is a learning curve, but with God, our dreams and hopes are alive with Him. Therefore, I dedicate this book to God Almighty, who sees and lives and loves me so much! We serve a living God! Grateful!

    Preface

    Dear Reader:

The purpose of this book is for you to understand that following God is a process and very personal. We can know that He is with us, and we journey through life. Experience is a teacher. Yet we often repeat the same mistakes over and over again. Experience is a teacher, but what is it teaching us? To make mistakes over and over again? God tells us to get wisdom. It will help us. We are not alone. I felt alone because I did not fully understand that there are ways to know God. Reading His Word and praying, going to church, and allowing others to hold you accountable, will give you insight and wisdom into how to live in love and know God better. I hope that my story helps you know that you are understood by God, and as you yield and surrender to Him, He will help you heal and bless you! God wants us to be happy, even in the struggle. There may be strongholds that are keeping you from your best life. I know there were for me. You might be able to relate to the struggles in life as you read this book, and perhaps it will challenge you in some way to know God better. I hope you enjoy this book and gain insight into your own story as well as the human experience. I know there was for me. We live in a material world, but the unseen world is spiritual, and He made you a spiritual being created in His image! As you read, I hope you are blessed and desire to know God better! Galatians says in verse 5:13 (NLT), For you have been called to live in freedom, …use your freedom to serve one another in love. God bless you.

    Part 1

    Faith-Walk

Jeremiah says that God knows the plans He has for you to give us a future and a hope. Yet, in the Bible, we learn that My people perish for lack of knowledge. There is a banquet table, but could it be that our survivor-mode mentality keeps us stuck, with lack? If we hold tight and keep what is in our hand (clutched tight!), and don’t let go, in faith, that is all we will ever have.

So, what is keeping us from change, clinging to the known? Is it fear-based behavior that keeps us bound? It is my prayer, as I share what I have learned about passive living vs. courage, that my dear readers will be encouraged to move forward in God through surrender to the Holy Spirit. The Lord wants us to live a courageous and victorious life!

The are many stories in the Bible that teach us all how to walk in faith and also show us how not to live. God wants us to walk in faith throughout our lives. But it takes effort to know God too! God’s Word tells us how to know Him personally, but we must commit to His guidance. In fact, the word irresponsible means, in part, not committed! Yikes! So, how can we intentionally get to know God and also experience His love?

I want to encourage you to become a more literate Christian. You may also identify with some aspects of my pain. I hope you, too, will recalculate and walk with God, for He is not the source of our problems. He is the source of our hope!

Unfortunately, it took me longer (leaving some regrets) to understand how to get wisdom. Some of my experiences left me fearing people instead of God. But God is so patient. He is waiting for us to look to Him (look up)! He is our shield and our source of protection. God is so marvelous, but this amazing relationship is a partnership. He wants us to journey with Him throughout of life. Isaiah 30:10–11 and 51:1–2 says: Who among you fears the Lord? Who obeys the voice of His servant? Who walks in darkness and has no light? Let him trust in the name of the Lord and rely upon his God. Look, all you who kindle a fire, who encircles yourself with sparks you have kindled. Then you shall have my hand. You shall not lie down in torment. Listen to me and follow after righteousness—you who seek the Lord. Look to the rock from which you were hewn and the whole of the pit from which you were dug. Look to Abraham, your earthly father, and to Sarah, who bore you and called you alone and increased him and blessed him.

That’s an instruction! Meditate on how to walk with God. Listen to how to walk with God. Listen because God is speaking. Do you encircle yourself with sparks or the fire of God? Remember that fire can be both comforting and also fierce, depending on its source! Do you walk in passive darkness, or do you surround yourself with the light of God’s knowledge and love? He is our source! Let’s journey together and explore the principles of walking with God.

    Recalculate

Walk with God. What does it really mean to walk with God?

Why did it take me so long to see the light and obtain God’s wisdom? Have you ever said that? Why was my vision so clouded"? Why did I feel so disconnected in life? How do I know God’s will for my life? For me, it is clear that I was reading the wrong books! Instead of pursuing God rather, I spent my time delving into academic and educational goals of science. That occupied my attention. For I was taught that education was the pathway to success, not fully understanding that it is God who charts our path as we pursue Him!

Why didn’t I get godly advice or seek out a mentor? Why did I take a passive approach to God? Possible answers:

    Self-reliant (comfort zone).

    Always very busy.

    Survival mode.

    Trauma (hurts kept me hiding).

    Mask (wants to people please).

Walls (self-protection in church, no mentors, not connected, no wisdom [did not read God’s Word]).

Even self-awareness comes from God. Can we be transparent with God and with ourselves? What kind of problems, strongholds, history, or family struggles and stumbling blocks define you? Allow God to search your heart and fill you with His truths while also looking at the principles and standards of God.

We might not even see our own shortcomings, not perceiving there is a problem. That’s why an accountability partner is also helpful, as well as comparing
