Of course this series is going to be compared to Kirkman's other lumbering beast, The Walking Dead. And, while there were times when the arcs in TWD were somewhat less enticing than others, Kirkman was always able to bring the action and pathos.

Unfortunately, in this, the other series by him, this invasion arc would have been much more epic. This just kind of sat there, like my mother's tapioca pudding, boring and unwanted.

It had some moments, but mostly, not so much. Rusk, the new villain is a one-note trick...really nice, with occasional explosions of violence. The rescue was dull. The invasion had a cool moment, and a nice twist (and the only reason I gave this a three-star rating), but again, was mostly boring.

I'm looking forward to completing this series in two more volumes. I'm here to the end, but only because the end is nigh.

After a lull in the muddled middle volumes, this series seems to be on solid footing, with the last volume and this one actually moving stuff along and upping the drama. The characters are still pretty generic, but the story is starting to go in some bold directions as reverberations from the quiet little war with demons are finally heard far and wide. I'm actually looking forward to the next volume for the first time.
