Kapitel 1

Chapter1

Hey there.

Hallo.

My name is Jenny. I’m in a hospital right now. Since I’m only 10 years old, of course, it’s a Children’s Hospital.

Ich heiße Jenny. Zur Zeit bin ich in einem Krankenhaus. Da ich nur 10 Jahre alt bin ist es natürlich ein Krankenhaus für Kinder.

My favorite nurse, who promised me she would never lie to me, told me my cancer had spread.

Meine Lieblingskrankenschwester, die mir versprochen hat, dass sie niemals zu mir lügen würde, hat mir gesagt, dass der Krebs sich ausgebreitet hat.

Well, so much for going home soon!

Nun, so viel für in kürze nach Hause zu gehen.

Actually, I believe the only people who know that I might die very soon are my doctor and me.

Eigentlich, ich glaube die einzigen Leute, die wissen das ich sterben könnte, sind mein Doktor und ich.

But I’m cool with it. I found a new friend here. An older boy, he is already 13 years old. His name is Jacob. I call him Jac. He likes it, I think.

Aber das ist OK mit mir. Ich habe hier einen neuen Freund gefunden. Ein älterer Junge; er ist schon 13 Jahre alt. Sein Name ist Jacob. Ich nenne ihn Jac. Ich glaube er mag das.

We talked about dying and stuff and he said, he heard in school about reincarnation. That means, when a person died, he or she will come back; like re-born again. You just have to stay up there for a short while and then they send you back to earth where you start a new life.

Wir haben uns über das Sterben und so was unterhalten, und er sagte er hat in der Schule etwas über die Wiedergeburt gehört. Das heißt, wenn jemand stirbt das er oder sie wieder zur Erde zurück kommt. Für eine kurze Weile musst du da oben bleiben, bis die dich wieder zurück zur Erde schicken, und du fängst wieder ein neues Leben an.

I like that a lot because I will not have the cancer anymore. And Jac will not have the accident when he was hit by a car and broke his back.

Mir gefällt das sehr gut da ich dann den Krebs nicht mehr habe. Und Jac wird nicht den Unfall haben als er von einem Auto angefahren wurde und er sich sein Rückgrat gebrochen hatte.

Now he is in a wheelchair but in a new life he can run around again. If we are lucky, we will even meet again. That would be really cool. I like him a lot.

Er ist jetzt in einem Rollstuhl aber in einem neuen Leben kann er wieder herumlaufen. Wenn wir Glück haben, werden wir uns sogar wieder treffen. Das wäre so cool. Ich habe ihn sehr lieb.

Actually, Jac and I made a deal. Whoever dies first will come back in a dream or so and tells the other one how it is on the other side and give some advice or whatever.

Tatsache ist das Jac und ich uns etwas versprochen haben. Wer zuerst stirbt kommt zu dem anderen in einem Traum und erklärt, wie es auf der anderen Seite so ist und gibt einige gute Ratschläge, oder so.

I’m happy I have Jac as a friend. He totally gets me. We can talk for hours. I can tell him everything.

Ich bin sehr froh, dass Jac mein Freund ist. Er versteht mich total. Wir können uns stundenlang unterhalten. Wir haben keine Geheimnisse.

I saw Jac only for a few minutes today. He always has therapy in the morning and after that he comes in my room, and we have lunch together. Today he didn’t come because he had friends from school visiting him. I guess they have their boys talk!

Ich habe Jac heute nur für ein paar Minuten gesehen. Er hat immer morgens seine Therapie und danach kommt er in mein Zimmer und wir haben zusammen Mittagessen. Heute ist er nicht gekommen, weil seine Schulkameraden ihn besuchen kommen. Ich nehme an die werden ihre ´nur für Jungens´ stories erzählen.

My mom is coming later in the afternoon. Maybe my dad will come, too.

Meine Mom kommt heute Nachmittag. Vielleicht kommt mein Daddy auch!

Well, I’m a bit tired anyway, so I take a short nap.

Ich bin ein bißchen müde, ich lege mich etwas hin.

I must have slept longer than I intended. It is already getting dark. Or maybe it’s only the rain which is drumming on the window that makes the sky so dark. It is raining for two days now.

Ich muß länger geschlafen haben als ich vorhatte. Es wird schon dunkel. Oder es ist nur der Regen, der so an das Fenster trommelt und macht den Himmel so dunkel. Es regnet nun schon für zwei Tage.

Hey, there is my mom. My dad is also here and my older sister Emma. What are they doing all here? It’s not my birthday, or is it? No, it’s not! I’m still only ten years old.

He, da ist meine Mom. Mein Daddy ist auch da und meine ältere Schwester Emma. Was machen die alle hier? Es ist nicht mein Geburtstag, oder ist es? Nein, es ist nicht! Ich bin immer noch nur 10 Jahre alt.

My dad looks angry. Why is he so angry? And why are my mom and my sister crying?

Mein Daddy sieht ärgerlich aus. Warum ist er so ärgerlich? Und warum weinen meine Mom und meine Schwester?

I wish I would know why they look at that child in the bed and not at me up here. Up here? What is going on? I cannot fly, why am I hovering on the ceiling of my room?

Ich würde gerne wissen, warum die nach dem Kind in dem Bett schauen und nicht nach mir hier oben? Hier oben? Was ist hier los? Ich kann nicht fliegen, warum schwebe ich hier an der Decke in meinem Zimmer?

Wait a minute, that girl in the bed; it is me. Why am I still sleeping and why am I also up here?

If that is a trick, it’s a pretty good one!

Warte mal eben, das Mädchen in dem Bett; das bin ich. Warum schlafe ich immer noch und warum bin ich auch hier oben? Wenn das ein Trick ist, es ist ein sehr guter!

There comes Jac in his wheelchair. All right, he will wake me up and straighten everything out.

Hier kommt Jac in seinem Rollstuhl. OK, er wird mich aufwecken und alles aufklären.

Now he is also crying and grasping my hand. And I’m still not waking up, but I’m flying higher toward that bright light over there.

Nun weint er auch und hält meine Hand. Und ich schlafe immer noch, aber ich fliege höher und höher zu dem Licht da oben.

I am actually feeling much better now. The pressure in my head is gone and there are no cramps in my belly anymore. It is really nice up here. I didn’t know I can fly. That’s amazing, I’m not even flapping my arms; I think, I’m just like sailing, but there is no wind at all. Incredible! Maybe I can even get some speed. Well, not really, but it is still great.

Ich fühle mich eigentlich viel besser. Der Druck in meinem Kopf ist nicht mehr da und ich habe auch keine Krämpfe in meinem Bauch mehr. Es ist sehr schön hier oben. Ich wußte nicht das ich fliegen kann. Das ist verblüffend, ich klappe noch nicht mal meine Arme. Ich glaube, ich schwebe, aber da ist überhaupt kein Wind. Unbegreiflich! Vielleicht kann ich etwas schneller fliegen. Na, ich glaube nicht, aber es ist trotzdem sehr schön.

I must be at least two or even three hundred meters up here and the light gets brighter and brighter. It is a powerful, warm light and everything is just fine.

Ich muß mindestens zwei oder sogar drei hundert Meter hoch sein und das Licht wird immer heller und leuchtender. Es ist ein strahlendes, warmes Licht und ich fühle mich sehr gut.

Just like when granny was still alive, and she had her old stove in the large kitchen lit in the late fall and we placed chestnuts on the red-hot stove top. It smelled really nice while we waited ‘till the chestnuts turned black and cracked open.

Es war, wie wenn Omi noch da war und ihr alter Herd war an in der großen Küche im Herbst, und wir hatten Kastanien auf der rot glühenden Ofenplatte gelegt. Es roch richtig gut, während wir warteten bis die Kastanien schwarz gebrannt und aufgesprungen waren.

Sometimes there was the first snow with big, huge snowflakes. We could see through the window that it was cold and windy outside, but it was nice and warm in Granny’s kitchen, and everybody was happy.

Manchmal hatten wir den ersten Schneefall mit großen, enormen Schneeflocken. Aus dem Fenster konnten wir sehen, wie kalt und windig es draußen war, aber es war gemütlich und warm in Omi´s Küche und wir waren alle sehr glücklich.

Lately it felt like a long time ago that I had this safe and secure feeling, but it was just last year, before I got sick.

Now that warm feeling is back again, and I even can fly now. Amazing!

In letzter Zeit es fühlt sich an, als wenn es eine lange Zeit her ist das ich die geborgene und warme Gefühle gehabt habe, aber ich hatte es letztes Jahr, bevor ich krank geworden bin.

Jetzt ist das warme Gefühl wieder da und ich kann sogar fliegen. Unbegreiflich!

I wish my friend Jac would be here with me. I’m not sure if he could fly with his wheelchair, but why not?

It feels like everything is possible here.

Es wäre schön, wenn mein Freund Jac zusammen mit mir hier wäre. Ich bin mir nicht sicher, ob er mit seinem Rollstuhl fliegen könnte, aber warum eigentlich nicht.

Es fühlt sich an, als wenn alles hier möglich wäre.

I must be flying for some time, because I cannot see the hospital anymore. If I wouldn’t be so nosy to see what is on the end of the light maybe I could make a big loop and soar back to the hospital like Superwoman! That would be so cool.

Ich kann das Krankenhaus nicht mehr sehen, ich glaube ich fliege schon ziemlich lange. Wenn ich nicht so neugierig wäre und wollte sehen was am Ende von dem Licht vor sich geht, vielleicht könnte ich einen großen Bogen fliegen und rase zurück zum Krankenhaus, wie Superwoman! Das wäre so cool.

Maybe even Jac could see me then and they all would stop crying because they could see how happy I am.

Vielleicht Jac könnte mich sogar sehen und alle würden aufhören zu weinen, weil die sehen könnten, wie glücklich ich bin.

But I’m still not at the end of the light tunnel and I reeealy want to see what is there. I just cruise back a bit later.

Aber ich bin immer noch nicht am Ende des Tunnels und ich möchte wirklich sehen was da ist. Ich werde etwas später zurück gehen.

Suddenly I was at a large place. Everything was bright, peaceful, and soft white. Something guided me to a group of children. I had never seen them before, but I felt like I know them all.

Plötzlich war ich auf einem großen Platz. Alles war strahlend weiß und friedlich. Irgend etwas führte mich zu einer Kindergruppe. Ich hatte die Kinder noch nie gesehen, aber sie alle kamen mir vertraut vor.

There was music in the background. Different than anything I had ever heard before. It was a quiet, soft song in a strange and wonderful language.

Da war Musik im Hintergrund. Ganz anders als was ich jemals gehört habe. Es war ein nicht sehr lauter, sanftes Lied in eine fremde und wunderbare Sprache.

I didn’t know the words, but I understood what the song was about. I don’t remember what it was only that I liked it and made me feel good.

Ich kannte nicht die Wörter, aber ich konnte das Lied verstehen. Ich kann mich nicht erinnern was es war, nur das ich es mochte und dass es mir ein gutes Gefühl gab.

Most important, I never felt happier and safer.

Das Wichtigste, ich habe mich niemals glücklicher und beschützter gefühlt.

Anyway, after a while a few of the kids slowly moved to the back row of our group and then they disappeared.

Eine kurze Zeit später einige Kinder gingen langsam zur letzten Reihe und plötzlich waren sie verschwunden.

I asked a girl who was here before me what that was all about. She smiled and said:

They got a new assignment!

Ich fragte ein Mädchen die früher hier war als ich was das alles sein soll. Sie lächelte und sagte:

´´Die haben einen neuen Auftrag bekommen!´´

I was already smiling since I liked it here so much but now, I was really smiling, because now I knew that the stories about reincarnation were true, and I would come back to earth as a girl without the cancer. Like I said to mom.

I will be back.

Ich habe schon gelächelt, weil es mir hier so gut gefällt, aber nun hatte ich noch mehr Freude weil ich jetzt weiß das die Geschichten von der Wiedergeburt wahr sind und ich werde wieder zurück zur Erde kommen als ein kleines Mädchen ohne Krebs. Ganz genau wie ich es zu meiner Mom gesagt habe:

´´Ich werde zurück kommen!´´

I don’t know how long it took because time doesn’t mean anything up here, but I was slowly moving to the back, and I think I drifted into a sleep.

Ich muß nur noch etwas warten für meinen Auftrag.

Ich habe keine Ahnung wie lange ich gewartet habe, weil die Zeit hier keine Bedeutung hat, aber ich bewegte mich langsam zur letzten Reihe und ich wurde auf einmal sehr müde.

When I woke up, I was surrounded by tall grass. I never had seen such tall grass before. In front of it was a huge lake.

Als ich wach wurde war ich mit hohem Gras umgeben. Ich hatte noch nie so hohes Gras gesehen und davor war ein großer See.

My belly was rumbling; I was really hungry. Maybe I could find something to eat if I would go deeper into the grass.

Mein Magen fing an zu knurren; ich war sehr hungrig. Vielleicht kann ich etwas zu essen finden, wenn ich tiefer ins Gras gehen würde.

No way! It was just not possible for me to see anything through the tall grass so I jumped as high as I could and perhaps, I’ll be able to see something.

Auf keinem Fall! Es war nicht möglich für mich irgendetwas durch das hohe Gras zu sehen. Darum bin ich so hoch wie möglich gesprungen und vielleicht kann ich so etwas sehen.

Wow… that was an amazing jump I just made. I never thought any kid could jump that high and I actually felt back toward the big lake.

Wow, das war ein unheimlicher Sprung, den ich da gerade gemacht habe. Ich hatte niemals geglaubt das ein Kind so hoch springen kann und ich bin auch noch rückwärts in Richtung zu dem See gefallen.

When I looked in the water, I couldn’t see me. All I saw was a little orange frog.

Ich konnte mich nicht sehen als ich in das Wasser schaute. Das einzige das ich sah, war ein sehr kleiner orange Frosch.

Eh, wait a sec; waiving my arms, the frog is waving its arms.

You know what? I’m back on earth alright, but not as a little girl. I’m back as a little frog!

He, warte mal; wenn ich meine Arme bewege, der Frosch bewegt seine Arme. Weißt du was? Es ist schon wahr das ich wieder zurück bin, aber nicht als ein kleines Mädchen.

Ich bin zurück gekommen als ein kleiner Frosch!

That was definitely not what I expected. They must have made a mistake up there!

Das war absolute nicht was erwartet hatte. Die haben wahrscheinlich etwas falsch gemacht da oben.

At least I was kind of a pretty, little orange frog. I had never seen a frog like, well, like me.

Zumindest war ich ein hübscher, kleiner orange Frosch. Ich hatte noch nie einen Frosch wie, na, wie ich, gesehen.

And that big lake is just a water puddle!

Und der große See ist nur eine Pfütze!

I’m wondering what I’m supposed to eat now.

Ich möchte mal gerne wissen was ich nun essen soll.

I should have listened better when we talked about Amphibians in school, back at the time when I was a little girl.

Zurück zu der Zeit als ich ein kleines Mädchen war, sollte ich besser zugehört haben, wenn wir in der Schule über Frösche und so was gesprochen hatten.

Maybe I should try to catch a fly or something that small. It looks like I have a long tongue. I can stick it all the way up, over my head to my back.

Vielleicht sollte ich versuchen etwas so klein wie eine Fliege zu fangen. Es sieht so aus, als ob ich eine lange Zunge habe. Ich kann sie so weit herausstecken das sie über meinem Kopf bis zum Rücken geht.

Well, first of all I need something to drink. The water in this small pond is as good as anything, I guess.

Nun, das erste das ich brauche ist etwas zu trinken. Das Wasser in der Pfütze ist so gut wie irgend etwas anderes, das glaube ich mal.

Not too bad actually.

Eigentlich nicht schlecht.

Hey there is another frog over there. In fact, there are several in the water. All orange ones just like me.

He, da drüben ist ein anderer Frosch. Tatsache ist, da sind mehrere andere im Wasser. Das sind alles orange Frösche, genau wie ich.

But none of them is moving. Is that a frog thing to do? Playing dead or sleeping a lot? Even in the water?

I have to swim out there and find out!

Aber die bewegen sich nicht. Ist das normal für Frösche? Spielen toter Mann oder schlafen sehr viel? Selbst im Wasser?

Ich muß mal dahin schwimmen und heraus finden was die da so machen.

When I was a little girl, I learned a little bit how to swim. It called front stroke. I think I do the same here.

Als ich ein kleines Mädchen war habe ich etwas schwimmen gelernt. Wir haben es Brustschwimmen genannt. Ich glaube, ich mache das gleiche hier.

Off I go, jump in the water, and front stroke to the nearest brother or sister of mine, and to the next one and the next one.

Ich gehe mal, springe ins Wasser und schwimme zu meinem Bruder oder meiner Schwester. Und zum nächsten, und zum nächsten.

Well, they are all dead! Maybe there is something wrong with the water. Oh my gosh, I drank some of it! Hopefully it wasn’t enough to kill me, too. I feel a little dizzy. Maybe it’s better if I turn on my back and backstroke to the puddle shore.

Die sind alle mausetot! Vielleicht ist das Wasser vergiftet. Oh, mein heiliger Bimbam, ich habe etwas von dem Wasser getrunken! Hoffentlich war es nicht genug, um mich auch zu töten. Mir ist es etwas komisch zu mute. Wahrscheinlich ist es besser, wenn ich mich auf den Rücken lege und zurück zum Pfützenstrand schwimme.

I jumped a bit all over the place to get an idea where I was, and I saw many more dead orange frogs.

Ich bin etwas hin und her gesprungen, um herauszufinden wo ich bin, und ich habe jede Menge tote orange Frösche gesehen.

I also saw a fat, dark brown monster frog. This guy was very much alive and probably very dangerous. So I didn’t bother saying hi.

Ich habe auch einen fetten, dunkel braunen Riesenfrosch gesehen. Dieser Bursche war sehr lebendig und wahrscheinlich sehr gefährlich. Ich habe mir nicht den Kopf darüber zerbrochen, ob ich ``hallo`` sagen sollte.

Then I saw a snake. Only a small one, but I know from watching TV that snakes can open their mouth very wide and love to eat little frogs like me. Luckily, they cannot jump as far as we frogs can. One big jump and I was out of harm’s way.

Dann habe ich eine Schlange gesehen. Die war ziemlich klein, aber ich weiß vom Fernseh schauen das Schlangen können ihr Maul sehr weit auf machen und die essen kleine Frösche, wie ich einer bin, sehr gerne. Glücklicherweise können die nicht springen wie wir Frösche. Ein großer Sprung und ich war aus der Gefahrenzone.

It’s kind of funny; I came back as a frog, but I still think like a girl. I don’t know how that is going to work.

Es ist irgentwie lustig; ich bin zurück gekommen als ein Frosch aber ich denke immer noch wie ein kleines Mädchen.

All that excitement made me tired. It’s time for a nap.

Alle diese Neuigkeiten und Aufregungen haben mich müde gemacht. Es ist Zeit für ein Nickerchen.

I jump over there where the flowers with the big leaves are and hide underneath them.

Ich springe nach drüben wo die Blumen mit den großen Blättern sind und verstecke mich unter denen.

That was a nice sleep I had. It must be early morning because there is some morning mist on the big leaves. I licked some drops from a leave and then I saw my breakfast. A short but fat worm came from underneath a rock. I didn’t really know what to do and – flop – the worm was gone!
