For many years there is a mystery around. It goes like this: If nobody is in the forest, would a fallen tree make the same sounds as it makes when people are present? Nobody so far was able to answer this question.

She is, however, not at all afraid of dying. The young girl believes in reincarnation and is looking forward to returning to earth without the pain she has now. And she is right! She will come back. Just not exactly like she hoped. But most important, Jenny loved where she is and what she has to do.Number three is about ‘big Doug’, a thousand-year-old Douglas Fire who used to live on the West Coast on Vancouver Island, Canada. Many, many years ago, high up in the sky a tiny seed was blown miles and miles to the shore of the Pacific Ocean. It flowed down toward the sandy beach and before the tide could sweep it away, a raven picked it up, and carried it a short distance away from the wild ocean waters. From great heights he lost interest in it and let it go again. Finally, this petite seed reached the rich earth in the rain forest where it took root. Thanks to the raven, this young sapling grew to became one of the tallest trees on the West Coast of Canada and has countless stories to tell.The fourth book, ‘Fairy Tales’, tells stories about long forgotten times. Like kings, princes and princesses, cowboys and Indians, knights and soldiers, as well as rich people and bandits. Nova Scotia

It takes thousands and thousands of years before an average rock from the bottom of the ocean becomes a well-polished and smooth pebble. If one is lucky, one day it will even make it out of the salty ocean water, and onto the beach. Here you can see us lying in the sun, and if it gets too hot, we just wait for the next wave and let her take us back into the cool seawater. However, there is nothing to worry about, because one of the waves will also bring us in again, and we can do that all day long. Until that is, a big one comes – we call them breakers – and carry us a long way to the upper part of the beach, away from the water. There, we usually stay for a while for the pleasure of the beachgoers who like to play with us, because of our charming skin. Of course, some of the kids, well..., sometimes it is a childish grown-up, likes to hurl us back into the ocean. We really, really do not like that.

Es dauert Tausende und Abertausende von Jahren, bevor ein durchschnittlicher Fels vom Meeresboden zu einem gut polierten und glatten Kieselstein wird. Wenn man Glück hat, schafft man es eines Tages sogar aus dem salzigen Meerwasser und auf den Strand zu kommen. Hier sieht man uns in der Sonne liegen, und wenn es zu heiß wird, warten wir einfach auf die nächste Welle und lassen uns von ihr zurück ins kühle Meerwasser bringen. Es gibt jedoch keinen Grund zur Sorge, denn eine der Wellen wird uns auch wieder hereinbringen, und das können wir den ganzen Tag lang tun. Bis das ist, kommt ein großer – wir nennen die Brecher – und trägt uns einen langen Weg zum oberen Teil des Strandes, weg vom Wasser. Dort bleiben wir in der Regel eine Weile zum Vergnügen der Strandbesucher, die wegen unserer charmanten Haut gerne mit uns spielen. Natürlich schleudern uns einige der Kinder, naja..., manchmal ist es ein kindlicher Erwachsener, gerne zurück ins Meer. Wir mögen das wirklich, wirklich nicht.

Besides, we are talking about the truly lucky ones. Not all of us are blessed with a perfectly round and smooth body. Some of us came out of the ocean too early and because of that, our bodies are not as perfect. People don’t play with us or collect us like they do with the round and shiny ones.

I am like that and so is my friend; please, let me introduce myself to you. My name is Lorie, this guy over there is my best friend, Francis. Since nobody really likes us as much as they like the smooth pebbles, we call ourselves Rocks. That sounds a lot tougher! Don’t you agree?

Außerdem sprechen wir über die wirklich Glücklichen. Nicht alle von uns sind mit einem perfekt runden und glatten Körper gesegnet. Einige von uns kamen zu früh aus dem Ozean und deshalb sind unsere Körper nicht so perfekt. Die Leute spielen nicht mit uns oder sammeln uns wie die Runden und Glänzende.

There is something else you probably always expected, yet never knew for sure. We can walk, sometimes even run, but only at night or if we are sure, that nobody, and I really mean nobody, can see us. We both were propelled on a beach in Nova Scotia, Canada. It was a cold spring day.

Nova Scotia does not really have a spring; however, there was still a lot of snow around, and the sun was out full blast. Because of that, we both could not see clearly right away. You know, coming for the first time out of the dark ocean and all. But maybe I should let Francis tell you about our journey.

Hier ist etwas anderes, was du wahrscheinlich immer erwartet hast, aber nie sicher wusstes. Wir können laufen, manchmal sogar rennen, aber nur nachts oder wenn wir sicher sind, dass uns niemand, und ich meine wirklich niemand, sehen kann. Wir wurden beide an einem Strand in Nova Scotia, Kanada, angetrieben. Es war ein kalter Frühlingstag.

Nova Scotia hat nicht wirklich einen Frühling; Es gab jedoch immer noch viel Schnee und die Sonne war in vollem Gange. Aus diesem Grund konnten wir beide nicht sofort klar sehen. The snow was such a bright white that I, Francis, nearly fell over what appeared to be a Scottish beach rock.

"Watch where you walk, are you blind...? He said in a deep voice.

"Achte darauf, wohin du gehst, bist du blind...? Sagte er mit tiefer Stimme.

"I apologize, Sir," I said, we just came out of the ocean, and I did not expect the bright sunlight and all the snow, I think, I was a bit blinded. Sorry again and have a nice day, Sir.

"No worries, Buddy..., I just had a little nap, and you surprised me, that is all. We Nova Scotians are known to be friendly and polite. If anybody must apologize it should be me. I am sorry Buddy, and welcome to Nova Scotia, or New Scotland, as we Scots like to call it."

Keine Sorge, Buddy..., ich hatte gerade ein kleines Nickerchen, und du hast mich überrascht, das ist alles. Wir Nova Scotians sind dafür bekannt, freundlich und höflich zu sein. My friend Lorie came right behind me, and he, of course, had the same problem as I had.

Mein Freund Lorie kam direkt hinter mir, und er hatte natürlich das gleiche Problem wie ich.

"I cannot see..., I cannot see...," he stuttered while stumbling toward me.

Ich kann nicht sehen..., ich kann nicht sehen..., stotterte er, während er auf mich zu stolperte.

"Let us stop for a moment to get used to the bright light," I said.

"Good idea," he answered, first I got dizzy from all that rolling underwater, and now after a few thousand years finally light, that is great, it is just too bright, and it may take a while to get used to it.

"About half an hour and you guys will be OK," replied the Scot, I went through that a few months ago, just like you.

We talked a bit until another, a smaller guy joined the conversation. It seemed he was a native nugget. He asked us what we were planning to do now that we had made it out of the ocean. I told him that it was our dream for a long, long time, to see the world.

Wir unterhielten uns ein wenig, bis ein anderer, ein kleinerer Typ an dem Gespräch teilnahm. Es schien, als wäre er ein einheimisches Nugget. Er fragte uns, was wir vorhatten, jetzt, da wir es aus dem Ozean gemacht hatten. Ich sagte ihm, dass es für eine lange, lange Zeit unser Traum sei, die Welt zu sehen.

"I will tell you one thing," he said, if that is your dream, then you better leave here as soon as possible..., if you stay here on the beach only for a few days, I am telling you right now, you will never leave!

Ich werde dir etwas sagen, sagte er, wenn das dein Traum ist, dann gehst du besser so schnell wie möglich..., wenn du hier am Strand nur für ein paar Tage bleibst, sage ich dir jetzt schon, du wirst nie gehen!

"Why is that?" Lorie wanted to know.

Warum ist das so? Lorie wollte es wissen.

"Because you will get lazy, that’s why! Look around, you see all those guys there? The beach is full of them, and they all had the same dreams as you guys. Even I had dreams like that, and look at me now..., I became too lazy to do anything. It is just too nice to lie in the sun and do nothing. Only very few are tough enough to go right away, I’m sorry to say, I’m not one of them. Ask MacScott here why he did not leave."

Weil du faul wirst, deshalb! Schaue dich um, siehst du all diese Jungs dort? Der Strand ist voll von ihnen, und sie hatten alle die gleichen Träume wie ihr. Sogar ich hatte solche Träume, und schau mich jetzt an..., ich wurde zu faul, um irgendetwas zu tun. Es ist einfach zu schön, in der Sonne zu liegen und nichts zu tun. Nur sehr wenige sind hart genug, um sofort loszugehen..., es tut mir leid zu sagen, ich gehöre nicht dazu. Frage MacScott hier, warum er nicht gegangen ist.

"Speak for yourself, little man..., I am a Mac, I can do whatever I want."

Sprich für dich selbst, kleiner Mann..., ich bin ein Mac, ich kann machen, was ich will.

The little Native told us it would be best for us to take off during the night and mingle with some of the smooth and shiny pebbles. Lorie and I agreed but, on the other hand, we did not even wait until dark. Since nobody else was around, we said our goodbyes, and off we went to fulfill our dream to see and conquer the world.

Der kleine Eingeborene sagte uns, dass es für uns am besten wäre, nachts zu gehen und uns mit einigen der glatten und glänzenden Kieselsteine zu vermischen. Lorie und ich stimmten zu, aber auf der anderen Seite warteten wir nicht einmal bis zum Einbruch der Dunkelheit. Da sonst niemand in der Nähe war, verabschiedeten wir uns und machten uns auf den Weg, um unseren Traum zu erfüllen, die Welt zu sehen und zu erobern.

It took us a while to walk from the beach toward a small town. When the sun went down and darkness surrounded us, we nearly fell a few times since there was no moon for the first part of the night because of the clouds. That changed a little bit later, and suddenly, not only the moon came out, but also thousands and thousands of stars. It seemed that every single star smiled at us for being so brave to walk away from the beach. That made us walk even straighter, faster, and prouder. When we came around a corner, we saw many pebbles strolling all over the place. Most of them did not seem to know where they were going. But several of them wore dark outfits which meant they were going to a funeral or a wedding. Either way, we followed them through a park and to a building that looked like a restaurant. It had a big sign on the front with the name of a well-known bistro. Looked like we were right; we just did not know which one, the funeral or the wedding. So..., I checked out the people we were following. Most, if not all of them, were laughing and happy.

Es dauerte eine Weile, bis wir vom Strand in Richtung einer kleinen Stadt gingen. Als die Sonne unterging und die Dunkelheit uns umgab, fielen wir ein paar Mal fast, da es wegen der Wolken für den ersten Teil der Nacht keinen Mond gab. Das änderte sich etwas später, und plötzlich kam nicht nur der Mond heraus, sondern auch Tausende und Abertausende von Sternen. Es schien, dass jeder einzelne Star uns anlächelte, weil wir so mutig waren, vom Strand wegzugehen. Das ließ uns noch gerader, schneller und stolzer gehen. Als wir um eine Ecke kamen, sahen wir viele Kieselsteine, die überall herumschlenderten. Die meisten von ihnen schienen nicht zu wissen, wohin sie gingen. Aber einige von ihnen trugen dunkle Outfits, was bedeutete, dass sie zu einer Beerdigung oder einer Hochzeit gingen. So oder so, wir folgten ihnen durch einen Park und zu einem Gebäude, das wie ein Restaurant aussah. Es hatte ein großes Schild auf der Vorderseite mit dem Namen eines bekannten Bistros. Sah so aus, als hätten wir Recht; wir wussten nur nicht welche, die Beerdigung oder die Hochzeit. Also..., ich schaute mir die Leute an, die wir folgten. Die meisten, wenn nicht alle, lachten und waren glücklich.

"I think we are on our way to a wedding, what do you think Lorie, want to bet it is a wedding?"

Ich denke, wir sind auf dem Weg zu einer Hochzeit, was denkst du, Lorie, willst du wetten, dass es eine Hochzeit ist?

"No thanks..., it seems to be pretty clear that somebody is getting married."

Nein danke..., es scheint ziemlich klar zu sein, dass jemand heiratet.

Well..., we were both right, it was a wedding. A coffee cup and a muffin were standing on the counter beside the cash register. The coffee cup groom told his future muffin wife how much he loved her, and that they will always be together. The muffin told him pretty much the same, and to the applause of the bystanders, they were declared husband and wife. There was a lot of handclapping and high-fives, but it was not clear to us where the newlyweds would go for their honeymoon. It seemed to us they were very happy right there in the cafe.

Nun..., wir hatten beide Recht, es war eine Hochzeit. Eine Kaffeetasse und ein Muffin standen auf dem Tresen neben der Kasse. Der Kaffeetassen-Bräutigam sagte seiner zukünftigen Muffin-Frau, wie sehr er sie liebte und dass sie immer zusammen sein werden. Der Muffin sagte ihm so ziemlich dasselbe, und unter dem Applaus der Umstehenden wurden sie zu Mann und Frau erklärt. Es gab viel Händeklatschen und High-Fives, aber es war uns nicht klar, wohin die Jungvermählten für ihre Flitterwochen gehen würden. Es schien uns, dass sie genau dort im Café sehr glücklich waren.

Du bist so süß, meine Blaubeermuffin...

After the wedding, we talked to a few pebble guests.

Nach der Hochzeit unterhielten wir uns mit ein paar Pebble-Gästen.

"That was a nice ceremony," I mentioned to one of them.

Das war eine schöne Zeremonie, sagte ich zu einem von ihnen.

"Yes, it was," he answered, especially since we only can have a union when there is a full moon. We used to have many weddings back in the full moon days. But in the last hundred years or so pebbles are not much interested in a real marriage anymore. They just live together on the beach without a proper marriage certificate, kind of like in sin!

Ja, das war es, antwortete er, "zumal wir nur bei Vollmond eine Vereinigung haben können. Früher hatten wir viele Hochzeiten in den Vollmondtagen. Aber in den letzten hundert Jahren oder so sind Kieselsteine nicht mehr sehr an einer echten Ehe interessiert. Sie leben einfach zusammen am Strand ohne eine richtige Heiratsurkunde, irgendwie wie in der Sünde!

"We did not know all that. It was only yesterday that we came out of the ocean. Actually, we do not really have a clue what is going on out of the water." That was Lorie.

Das alles wussten wir nicht. Erst gestern kamen wir aus dem Ozean. Eigentlich haben wir nicht wirklich eine Ahnung, was aus dem Wasser heraus passiert. Das war Lorie.

After talking for a while, we had learned quite a bit, and since the sun was coming out, we hurried a little deeper into the park. There we found a rock garden which was the perfect place for us to hide in plain view.

Obviously, the park was a well-liked place and in no time, there were people everywhere, and we had to go back to be stone rocks, so to speak.

After a while a butterfly came by, you know…, it was a rock garden with many flowers, and he was probably looking for some nectar. But why did it have to land on my head? And why wander all over my face? The worse was when he decided to sit on my nose… It became so itchy that I just had to try to get it off. But I could not because there was a little boy looking very close at the stupid butterfly. He seemed to be fascinated by it and could not take his eyes off the insect.

Finally, I could not hold it back any longer and I had to sneeze and that tossed the butterfly toward the little boy. He, of course, felt like he was being attacked and ran away screaming.

Nachdem wir uns eine Weile unterhalten hatten, hatten wir einiges gelernt, und da die Sonne herauskam, eilten wir etwas tiefer in den Park. Dort fanden wir einen Steingarten, der der perfekte Ort für uns war, um uns in Sichtweite zu verstecken.

Offensichtlich war der Park ein beliebter Ort und in kürzester Zeit waren überall Menschen da, und wir mussten zurückgehen, um sozusagen Steinfelsen zu sein.

Nach einer Weile kam ein Schmetterling vorbei, weißt du..., es war ein Steingarten mit vielen Blumen, und er war wahrscheinlich auf der Suche nach etwas Nektar. Aber warum musste es auf meinem Kopf landen? Und warum über mein ganzes Gesicht wandern? Das Schlimmste war, als er beschloss, sich auf meine Nase zu setzen... Es juckte mich so sehr, dass ich versuchen musste, es loszuwerden. Aber ich konnte nicht, weil da ein kleiner Junge war, der den dummen Schmetterling sehr genau ansah. Er schien davon fasziniert zu sein und konnte seine Augen nicht von dem Insekt abwenden.

Schließlich konnte ich es nicht länger zurückhalten und ich musste niesen und das warf den Schmetterling in Richtung des kleinen Jungen. Er fühlte sich natürlich angegriffen und rannte schreiend davon.

You would think a rock has a quiet life, but I am telling you it is not so. It would not be overly dramatic if I would consider our life to be something like that of an undercover agent, or even a spy. We are in steady danger that our secret life could be exposed, or people would make concrete out of us. To prevent that we might even have to sell ourselves, like that.

Du würdest denken, dass ein Stein ein ruhiges Leben hat, aber ich sage dir, dass es nicht so ist. Es wäre nicht allzu dramatisch, wenn ich unser Leben als so etwas wie das eines Undercover-Agenten oder sogar eines Spions betrachten würde. Wir sind in ständiger Gefahr, dass unser geheimes Leben aufgedeckt werden könnte, oder die Menschen würden Beton aus uns machen. Um das zu verhindern, müssen wir uns vielleicht sogar selbst verkaufen, wie das...!

" Thanks for buying me.

Those Canadians were going to make concrete out of me."

" Danke, dass Sie mich gekauft haben.

Diese Kanadier wollten Beton aus mir machen."

Well..., we survived the sneezing incident, and now we had to wait ‘til nightfall to continue our journey. In the meantime, when nobody was looking, we talked to some other rocks. After all, we were hiding in a rock garden. I talked to one of them about the wedding we had seen at the restaurant, and he told us that many pebbles had gone there because there are diners from this chain all over the world. One of the reasons for going there was that it was always nice to go to a place that somebody already knew and liked. It felt like coming home, he said… Well, that was interesting and nice to know, but it was already dark and nobody else was around anymore. It was time to continue our journey.

Nun..., wir haben den Niesvorfall überlebt, und jetzt mussten wir bis zum Einbruch der Dunkelheit warten, um unsere Reise fortzusetzen. In der Zwischenzeit, als niemand hinsah, sprachen wir mit einigen anderen Felsen. Schließlich versteckten wir uns in einem Steingarten. Ich sprach mit einem von ihnen über die Hochzeit, die wir im Restaurant gesehen hatten, und er erzählte uns, dass viele Kieselsteine dorthin gegangen waren, weil es Gäste dieses Cafés auf der ganzen Welt gibt. Einer der Gründe, dorthin zu gehen, war, dass es immer schön war, an einen Ort zu gehen, den jemand bereits kannte und mochte. Es fühlte sich an, als würde man nach Hause kommen, sagte er... Nun, das war interessant und schön zu wissen, aber es war schon dunkel und sonst war niemand mehr da. Es war Zeit, unsere Reise fortzusetzen.

Walking on foot would not take us very far, therefore, we took the advice one of the pebbles gave us. Jump or climb up to a car’s bumper and hide there, or just sit in the open on the bumper and let the car drive you around. But we did not want to take the chance that the car would take us into other provinces, but how could we find out what car we would be dealing with?

Gehen zu Fuß würde uns nicht sehr weit bringen, deshalb nahmen wir den Rat an, den uns einer der Kieselsteine gab. Springe oder klettere auf die Stoßstange eines Autos und verstecke dich dort, oder setze sich einfach offen auf die Stoßstange und lasse dich vom Auto herumfahren. Aber wir wollten nicht das Risiko eingehen, dass das Auto uns in andere Provinze bringt, aber wie konnten wir herausfinden, mit welchem Auto wir es zu tun haben würden?

Lorie had an idea: We know that Canada is a very large country with different climates and vegetation in the provinces. That also means that there are different animals, and even insects living there. Cars drive very fast and because of that, there must be dead insects on the front of the cars.

Lorie hatte eine Idee: Wir wissen, dass Kanada ein sehr großes Land mit unterschiedlichen Klimazonen und Vegetation in den Provinzen ist. Das bedeutet auch, dass dort verschiedene Tiere und sogar Insekten leben. Autos fahren sehr schnell und deshalb muss es tote Insekten auf der Vorderseite der Autos geben.

"Well..., you simple beach rock, if we look at the front of a car and we see different insects there, that should mean the people who own this car travel longer distances."

Nun..., du einfacher Strandfelsen, wenn wir auf die Vorderseite eines Autos schauen und dort verschiedene Insekten sehen, sollte das bedeuten, dass die Leute, die dieses Auto besitzen, längere Strecken zurücklegen.

"You are right genius, and with some practice, we may even be able to figure out from what province these people came from."

Du bist ein richtiges Genie, und mit etwas Übung können wir vielleicht sogar herausfinden, aus welcher Provinz diese Leute kamen.

We went to a car to check out Lorie’s idea. This car was exceptionally clean, and we could not find any insects on it. The same with the next one, and the one after that.

His idea did not pay off until we had checked the sixth or seventh car. Bingo, there were a few dead mosquitoes...!

Wir gingen zu einem Auto, um Lories Idee zu überprüfen. Dieses Auto war außergewöhnlich sauber und wir konnten keine Insekten darauf finden. Das gleiche gilt für das nächste und das übernächste.

Seine Idee zahlte sich erst aus, als wir das sechste oder siebte Auto überprüft hatten. Bingo, da waren ein paar tote Moskitos...!

They all looked the same to us which suggested that the owner drove only around the neighborhood, and just was not a very clean person. It took a while but finally, we found a small van with lots of dead mosquitoes on it.

It was parked in front of a building that had the sign ‘MOTEL’ on it.

When we checked it out, we found mosquitoes in swimsuits and tiny sunglasses, that were from Prince Edward Island. Others had T-shirts with Quebec written on them, and one had still a funny French bonnet on. It seemed we found a traveler.

It took us less than a minute to climb up on the bumper. Up there we just ignored all the dead mosquitoes on the grill and took a seat.

Die sahen alle gleich für uns aus, was darauf hindeutete, dass der Besitzer nur durch die Nachbarschaft fuhr und einfach keine sehr saubere Person war. Es dauerte eine Weile, aber schließlich fanden wir einen kleinen Van mit vielen toten Moskitos darauf.

Er war vor einem Gebäude geparkt, auf dem das Schild MOTEL stand.

Als wir es ausprobierten, fanden wir Moskitos in Badeanzügen und winzigen Sonnenbrillen, die von Prince Edward Island stammten. Andere hatten T-Shirts mit Quebec darauf geschrieben, und einer hatte noch eine lustige französische Haube auf. Es schien, als hätten wir einen Reisenden gefunden.

Wir brauchten weniger als eine Minute, um auf die Stoßstange zu klettern. Dort oben ignorierten wir einfach alle toten Mücken auf dem Grill und nahmen Platz.

Since the sun was already up, we did not have to wait long for the people to come out of the motel with their suitcases, and off they went with Lorie and me on the front bumper.

It was nice to drive slowly through the town, but when we came to the highway, the car drove faster, we really had to hold on to the grill because it certainly became windy, and

we could have easily fallen off the bumper. Next time we will sit on the back bumper. Well..., we still had a lot to learn.

Da die Sonne schon aufging, mussten wir nicht lange warten, bis die Leute mit ihren Koffern aus dem Motel kamen, und los ging es mit Lorie und mir auf die vordere Stoßstange.

Es war schön, langsam durch die Stadt zu fahren, aber als wir auf die Autobahn kamen, fuhr das Auto schneller, wir mussten uns wirklich am Grill festhalten, weil es sicherlich windig wurde, und wir hätten leicht von der Stoßstange fallen können. Das nächste Mal werden wir auf der hinteren Stoßstange sitzen. Nun..., wir mussten noch viel lernen.

After a two-hour drive on the front bumper, we arrived at another beach. This one was very rocky with enormous, but smooth boulders. There was also a lighthouse beside a large parking lot. A sign in front of a restaurant/gift store read WELCOME TO PEGGY’S COVE.

Nach einer zweistündigen Fahrt auf der vorderen Stoßstange kamen wir an einem anderen Strand an. Dieser war sehr felsig mit riesigen, aber glatten Felsbrocken. Da war auch ein Leuchtturm neben einem großen Parkplatz. Auf einem Schild vor einem Restaurant / Geschenkeladen stand WELCOME TO PEGGY'S COVE.

When we jumped down from the bumper, I saw that Lorie - who was not wearing a shirt - had quite a sunburn.

He did not realize it when we were driving because of the wind it created, however now he could feel the burn.

Als wir von der Stoßstange heruntersprangen, sah ich, dass Lorie - der kein Hemd trug - einen ziemlichen Sonnenbrand hatte.

Er bemerkte es nicht, als wir fuhren, wegen des Windes, den es erzeugte, aber jetzt konnte er das Brennen spüren.

We had to make it as fast as possible into the shade. First, we went underneath the car, unfortunately, it was extremely hot there because of the scorching motor and that was not good for Lorie.

Wir mussten so schnell wie möglich in den Schatten kommen. Zuerst gingen wir unter das Auto, leider war es dort extrem heiß wegen des sengenden Motors und das war nicht gut für Lorie.

When we thought that nobody was around for a few moments, we ran as fast as we could to a few bushes nearby. Normally we would wait there until dark, or until nobody was around, but this time that was not a possibility. I had to go and find something that would cool Lorie’s sunburn down.

Als wir dachten, dass für ein paar Momente niemand in der Nähe war, rannten wir so schnell wir konnten zu ein paar Büschen in der Nähe. Normalerweise warteten wir dort bis zum Einbruch der Dunkelheit oder bis niemand mehr in der Nähe war, aber diesmal war das keine Möglichkeit. Ich musste hingehen und etwas finden, das Lories Sonnenbrand abkühlen würde.

I could not see anybody, so… I sneaked toward the gift store where I hoped to find some sunburn cream. The entrance door was open, and there was nobody in the store. I climbed up to one of the shelves and had a look at where something like that could be. Before I was able to find anything a group of tourists came into the store, looking for some souvenirs to take home. They all looked around for a few minutes, bought a few postcards, and some other small items. I thought they would be going shortly until an older woman saw me on the shelf. Of course, I did not move at all when she came close to check me out. I did not move, even when her bad breath nearly made me faint. I just looked straight ahead, and from all the things in the store, it happened that I looked right at a bottle of sunburn lotion.

There it was, but I could not get it, because this old woman grabbed me, looked at me from all sides, and even turned me upside down. Obviously, she was looking for a price tag.

Ich konnte niemanden sehen, also... Ich schlich mich in Richtung des Geschenkeladens, wo ich hoffte, etwas Sonnenbrandcreme zu finden. Die Eingangstür war offen und es war niemand im Laden. Ich kletterte zu einem der Regale und schaute herum, wo so etwas sein könnte. Bevor ich etwas finden konnte, kam eine Gruppe von Touristen in den Laden, auf der Suche nach Souvenirs, die sie mit nach Hause nehmen konnten. Sie schauten sich alle ein paar Minuten um, kauften ein paar Postkarten und einige andere kleine Gegenstände. Ich dachte, sie würden in Kürze gehen, bis mich eine ältere Frau im Regal sah. Natürlich bewegte ich mich überhaupt nicht, als sie in die Nähe kam, um mich zu überprüfen. Ich bewegte mich nicht, selbst als ihr Mundgeruch mich fast ohnmächtig machte. Ich schaute nur geradeaus, und von all den Dingen im Laden passierte es, dass ich direkt auf eine Flasche Sonnenbrandlotion schaute.

Da war es, aber ich konnte es nicht bekommen, weil diese alte Frau mich packte, mich von allen Seiten ansah und mich sogar auf den Kopf stellte. Offensichtlich war sie auf der Suche nach einem Preisschild.

Of course, there was no one. She looked around to see where the clerk was, and when she could not see her, she just put me in her purse and closed it. Well..., what about that? The old lady stole me… and now I was in a dark purse while my friend Lorie was waiting for me.

Natürlich war da keins. Sie schaute sich um, um zu sehen, wo der Angestellte war, und als sie sie nicht sehen konnte, steckte sie mich einfach in ihre Handtasche und schloss sie. Tja..., was ist damit? Die alte Dame hat mich gestohlen... und jetzt war ich in einer dunklen Handtasche, während meine Freundin Lorie auf mich wartete.

The purse was waving back and forth for a minute or so and then it stopped. I could hear that the woman and some other people were sitting at a chair in the restaurant. A few minutes later they ordered a coffee and something to eat.

While they were waiting, they showed each other what they had bought..., or stolen, I guessed.

Die Handtasche winkte etwa eine Minute lang hin und her und dann blieb sie stehen. Ich konnte hören, dass die Frau und einige andere Leute auf einem Stuhl im Restaurant saßen. Ein paar Minuten später bestellten sie einen Kaffee und etwas zu essen.

Während sie warteten, zeigten sie sich gegenseitig, was sie gekauft oder gestohlen hatten, vermutete ich.

"Look what I got," the old woman bragged and lifted her purse up to grab me again. She put me on the table so everybody could see me. There were mostly older women there, and everybody felt the need to take me in their hand to have a closer look at me. Some even could not withstand my pretty face and put a wet kiss on my lips. After a while, I just could not stand it anymore, and I jumped from the hand of one of the ladies to the table, from there down her leg, and onto the floor. Now the race was on… I knew it would take them a while to overcome their shock, and I had to use that time to my advantage.

Schau, was ich bekommen habe, prahlte die alte Frau und hob ihre Handtasche hoch, um mich wieder zu packen. Sie legte mich auf den Tisch, damit mich jeder sehen konnte. Es waren hauptsächlich ältere Frauen da, und jede hatte das Bedürfnis, mich in die Hand zu nehmen, um mich genauer anzusehen. Einige konnten sogar meinem hübschen Gesicht nicht widerstehen und gaben mir einen feuchten Kuss auf die Lippen. Nach einer Weile konnte ich es einfach nicht mehr ertragen, und ich sprang von der Hand einer der Damen zum Tisch, von dort ihr Bein hinunter und auf den Boden. Nun ging das Rennen los... Ich wusste, dass es eine Weile dauern würde, bis sie ihren Schock überwunden hatten, und ich musste diese Zeit zu meinem Vorteil nutzen.

I ran, jumped, and even slid on the polished concrete floor to the gift store again. Here I jumped on a chair, and from there to the shelf where the sunburn lotion was. I grabbed the small bottle and jumped down again.

Ich rannte, sprang und rutschte sogar wieder auf dem polierten Betonboden zum Geschenkeladen. Hier sprang ich auf einen Stuhl und von dort zu dem Regal, wo die Sonnenbrandlotion war. Ich schnappte mir die kleine Flasche und sprang wieder runter.

Just when I was storming toward the exit door, a little dog – not much bigger than me – was standing in my way. Of course, it had to bark and yap at me. Well..., I had no time for that. In full speed, I ran toward him and hit his snout with the bottle. Suddenly he was not that tough anymore and whining like a little baby it ran away.

Gerade als ich auf die Ausgangstür zu stürmte, stand mir ein kleiner Hund – nicht viel größer als ich – im Weg. Natürlich musste er mich anbellen und anknurren. Tja..., dafür hatte ich keine Zeit. In voller Fahrt rannte ich auf ihn zu und schlug mit der Flasche auf seine Schnauze. Plötzlich war er nicht mehr so zäh, und jammerte and wie ein kleines Baby, lief es davon.

Finally, I was able to hightail it underneath a car, and from there to the next one, and next one, until I was together with my best friend Lorie again. He looked terrible with his fire-red face and chest. Of course, I felt sorry for him, but I was also happy that I had no sunburn at all… Probably, because I was built out of a different stone structure! Or I was just a tougher rock. You decide…

Schließlich konnte ich es unter einem Auto rennen und von dort zum nächsten und nächsten, bis ich wieder mit meinem besten Freund Lorie zusammen war. Er sah schrecklich aus mit seinem feuerroten Gesicht und seiner Brust. Natürlich tat er mir leid, aber ich war auch froh, dass ich überhaupt keinen Sonnenbrand hatte... Wahrscheinlich, weil ich aus einer anderen Steinstruktur geboren wurde! Oder ich war einfach ein härterer Fels. Du kannst das entscheiden...

Anyway, after I sprayed the cooling lotion on Lorie, he felt much better right away, and we made plans on what to do next. We both knew that we probably had to stay underneath the bushes until dark, but we also wanted to see the beach. When we drove the winding road up to the parking area at the lighthouse, we saw a totally different shoreline than what we had seen before.

Finally, one after another, the cars had left the parking area and the moon came out to show us the way to the beach. We walked by the lighthouse and soon we saw the dark ocean. There was no beach, but a giant, smooth rock which sloped down to the water. There were several massive rocks, woven into each other to create a massive and impressive landscape.

Wie auch immer, nachdem ich die Kühllotion auf Lorie gesprüht hatte, fühlte er sich sofort viel besser und wir machten Pläne, was als nächstes zu tun
