Big Doug is about a thousand-year-old Douglas Fir who lives on the West Coast on Vancouver Island, Canada.

Many, many years ago, high up in the sky a tiny seed was blown miles and miles to the shore of the Pacific Ocean.

It flowed down toward the sandy beach and before the tide could sweep it away, a raven picked it up, and carried it a short distance away from the wild ocean waters. From great heights he lost interest in it and let it go again.

Finally, this petite seed reached the rich earth in the rain forest where it took root. Thanks to the raven, this young sapling grew to became one of the tallest trees on the West Coast of Canada and has countless stories to tell.

He talks about the happy times but also the sad periods surrounding the Native tribe who lived right in front of him.

About the many animals, large and small; some just came for a visit to the majestic tree; while others played a remarkable role in the amazing stories for him to tell.

Lately, he had lost all his tree friends. Actually, his total neighbourhood was cut down and he is the only one still standing.

With his height of more than 70 meters, he is left to the mercy of the wind and may not see that many years anymore.

If his surrounding friends were still here, he could live another 500 or possibly even more years.

But that is probably not going to happen.

Therefore, I started and worked in my restoration business.In my free time I drafted several books, mostly for children. Why for children? Well, I grow up with two older sisters who read fairy tales to me to shut me up from asking too many questions. When I was finally able to read on my own, I am absolutely sure the party they had was to celebrate their newfound freedom from me and my pestering.Anyway, it got me hooked on fairy tales. So far, I wrote four children’s books. The first one is ‘Rock talk’. The main characters, Francis and Lorie, travel all over Canada and have lots of fun doing it.The second one, ‘I will be back’, is about a little girl. Jenny is in a hospital, dying of cancer. She is, however, not at all afraid of dying. The young girl believes in reincarnation and is looking forward to returning to earth without the pain she has now. And she is right! She will come back. Just not exactly like she hoped. But most important, Jenny loved where she is and what she has to do.Number three is about ‘big Doug’, a thousand-year-old Douglas Fire who used to live on the West Coast on Vancouver Island, Canada. Hello there, my name is Big Doug. Today is my birthday; I am one thousand years old. And since no person or animal gets that

old, I am a tree, to be specific, a Douglas Fir.

Hallo, mein Name ist Big Doug. Heute ist mein Geburtstag; Ich bin 1000 Jahre alt. Und da keine Person oder Tier so alt wird, bin ich ein Baum, um genau zu sein, ein Douglas Fir.

I do not really know where I came from because when I was just a seed the wind carried me over miles and miles until I fell to the soft ground on Vancouver Island, Canada.

Anyway, I consider myself a real Canadian tree.

Ich weiß nicht wirklich, woher ich kam, denn als ich nur ein Samen war, trug mich der Wind über Meilen und Meilen, bis ich auf Vancouver Island, Kanada, auf den weichen Boden fiel.

Jedenfalls halte ich mich für einen echten kanadischen Baum.

Just for you to get an idea how big and tall I am, let me tell you that my base is more than 3.90 meters in diameter. I still grow, but I am already more than 70 meters tall.

Damit du eine Idee bekommst, wie groß und stark ich bin, muß ich dir sagen, daß ich am Boden mehr als 3,90 Meter im Durchmesser bin. Ich bin schon mehr als 70 Meter groß und wachse immer noch.

When I was created there were only Natives and animals here on Vancouver Island, Canada. One Indian tribe was living nearby.

Als ich geschaffen wurde, gab es nur Indianer und Tiere hier auf Vancouver Island, Kanada. Ein Indianerstamm lebte in der Nähe.

I could not see them because I was only four inches tall, but I could hear them. Mostly the children, of course, they were always laughing and singing.

Ich konnte sie nicht sehen da ich nur zehn centimeter groß war, aber ich konnte sie hören. Meistens die Kinder, natürlich, die lachten und sangen immer.

The next few years I was always scared when the kids came too close to me. They didn’t always look when they were running around, and I saw many of my brothers and sisters lying there with their little stem broken. Some were dead, others were crippled and never grew tall and strong.

Die nächsten Jahre hatte ich immer Angst, wenn die Kinder etwas zu nahe kamen. Die haben sich nicht immer umgesehen, wenn sie herumliefen, und ich sah viele meiner Brüder und Schwestern lagen da mit ihrem kleinen Stamm abgebrochen. But I was lucky! The closest I came to danger was in my first year when a little squirrel grabbed me with his front paws but was chased away by a crow. I never found out what he was going to do to me, which, in fact, was just fine with me.

Aber ich hatte Glück! Nur in meinem ersten Jahr war ich ziemlich nahe in Gefahr, wenn ein kleines Eichhörnchen mich mit seinen Vorderpfoten packte. Aber es wurde von einer Krähe weg gejagt. Ich habe nie herausgefunden, was es mit mir wollte, was, in der Tat, mit mir in Ordnung war.

A few years later I witnessed a tragedy which involved a young Native boy. He was seven years old and had already lost his mother when he was born.

His Father never took another wife but was very close to his only son. On one of his fishing trips, he was also killed by the wild waters of the ocean.

His fishing friends carried his lifeless body home and his son, together with the entire tribe, mourned the death of a great Father, brother and friend.

Seine Angelfreunde trugen seinen leblosen Körper nach Hause und sein Sohn zusammen mit dem gesamten Stamm, betrauerte den Tod eines guten Vaters, Bruder und Freund.

When the dad was laid to rest, his young son stayed until everybody else was gone and he was on his own. Tears kept running down his face until he had no more left.

Als der Vater zur Ruhe gelegt war, sein junger Sohn blieb, bis alle anderen gegangen waren und er alleine war. Tränen lief über sein Gesicht, bis er keine mehr hatte.

A little girl, five years old, was walking away with her family when she looked back to the lonely little boy. She picked up a red flower, went back to the boy and handed it to him.

Ein kleines Mädchen, fünf Jahre alt, wanderte mit ihrer Familie weg, als sie zurück zu dem einsamen kleinen Jungen sah. Sie nahm eine rote Blume, ging zurück zu dem Jungen und reichte es ihm.

He took the flower and looked at the girl with pain in his eyes. The girl went home and shortly after, the boy’s uncle picked him up to live with him and his family in another tribe.

Er nahm die Blume und sah das Mädchen mit Schmerzen in den Augen an. Das Mädchen ging nach Hause und kurz danach, der Onkel des Jungen holte ihn ab, um mit ihm und seiner Familie in einem anderen Stamm zu leben.

Life went on in the tribe and not long after the ceremony, hordes of kids were playing, laughing and singing again. But I didn’t see the boy for several years.

Das Leben ging weiter in dem Stamm und nicht lange nach der Zeremonie, Horden der Kinder spielten, lachten und sangen wieder. Aber ich habe den Jungen für mehrere Jahre nicht gesehen.

The next 15 years went pretty fast. I had a lot of growing to do and I did just that. The children who played around me before had become young adults.

Die nächsten 15 Jahre gingen ziemlich schnell vorbei. Ich hatte eine Menge wachsen zu tun, und ich tat genau das. Die Kinder, die um mich herum gespielt hatten, waren junge Erwachsene geworden.

Now they played with bows, arrows and spears. The problem was, from all the trees in the forest, they choose me to be the one to throw their weapons at. Luckily, my bark was getting thicker, and their bone stacked arrows did not really hurt me.

Jetzt spielten sie mit Bogen, Pfeile und Speeren. Das Problem war, von allen Bäumen im Wald wählten sie mich, ihre Waffen zu werfen. Zum Glück, meine Rinde wurde dicker und ihre mit Knochen gespitzte Pfeile hatten mich nicht wirklich weh getan.

I also had my first birds, I believe they were ravens, who built their nest in my branches. First, I did not understand what the busy couple were doing, stacking twigs and small sticks in one place. But when the female started laying a couple of eggs in it, I got the idea.

Ich hatte auch meine ersten Vögel, ich glaube es waren Rabendie ihr Nest in meinen Zweigen gebaut hatten. Zuerst konnte ich nicht verstehen, was das beschäftigte Pärchen machte, stapelten Zweige und kleine Stöcke in einem Ort. Aber wenn die Rabenfrau anfing ein paar Eier zu legen, kam mir die Idee.

It was fun to watch a squirrel trying to steal one of the eggs. But who ever sat on the eggs, the raven dad or the mom, was only pretending to be asleep and was always able to chase the little bandit away.

Es machte Spaß ein Eichhörnchen zu beobachten das versuchte eines der Eier zu stehlen. Aber wer auf den Eiern saß, der Rabe Papa oder die Mama, gab nur vor zu schlafen und war immer in der Lage, den kleinen Banditen zu verjagen.

But he just was not going to give up until the larger raven grabbed him with his feet, flew off with him and dropped him in a nearby pond. Wet and probably embarrassed, the little bugger paddled back to shore and never bothered the raven couple and their young again.

Aber er wollte nicht aufgeben, bis der größere Rabe ihn mit seinen Füßen packte, flog mit ihm und ließ ihn in einem nahe gelegenen Teich fallen. Naß und wahrscheinlich beschämt, der kleine Kerl paddelte wieder an Land und nie wieder hat er sich die Mühe gemacht das Raben Paar und ihre Jungen zu belästigen.

In midsummer, the young ravens had long left the nest and the young Native boy who lost his father a long time ago, came back to his tribe. He was riding a black horse and definitely was no boy anymore, but a proud young man.

Im Hochsommer, die jungen Raben hatten lange ihr Nest verlassen, der junge Indianer Junge, der vor langer Zeit seinen Vater verlor, kam zurück zu seinem Stamm. Er ritt auf einem schwarzen Pferd und war definitiv kein Junge mehr, sondern ein stolzer junger Mann.

All the young, unmarried women were dancing and singing at the tribe’s celebration place, which I was able to see through the trees.

Alle jungen, unverheiratete Frauen tanzten und sangen auf des Stammes Feierplatz, was ich durch die Bäume sehen konnte.

The young girl that gave him the flower was also there. But..., she was anything then a little girl now. She grew to become the most beautiful woman anybody had ever seen.

Das junge Mädchen, das ihm die Blume gab, war auch da. Aber ..., sie war kein kleines Mädchen mehr. Sie wuchs um die schönste Frau, die jemand jemals gesehen hat, zu bekommen.

Every unmarried man was waiting for his turn to dance with her. And dancing she did with everybody, young or old, good looking or, well..., not.

Jeder unverheiratete Mann wartete auf seine Möglichkeit mit ihr zu tanzen. Und sie tanzte mit allen, jung oder alt, gut aussehend, oder…, nicht.

The biggest smile was always on her face, and she was full of energy. But that was as far as it went, and nobody was ever able to get her to follow him into his tepee.

Das größte Lächeln war immer auf ihrem Gesicht und sie war voller Energie. Aber das war so weit wie es ging und niemand war jemals in der Lage, sie zu sich in sein Tipi zu bekommen.

Of course, the young man also saw her, and he guided his horse through the dancing people toward the gorgeous girl. Standing with his horse in front of her, he handed her a small package. She opened it and found the dried flower she gave him so many years ago.

Natürlich, der junge Mann sah sie auch, und er führte sein Pferd durch die tanzenden Leute in Richtung des wunderschönen Mädchen. Stehend mit seinem Pferd vor ihr, er reichte ihr ein kleines PaketSie öffnete es und fand die getrocknete Blüte, die sie ihn vor so vielen Jahren gegeben hatte.

She looked at him and for the first time she followed a man when he reached out his hand to help her on his horse.

Sie sah ihn an, und zum ersten Mal folgte sie einen Mann als er seine Hand ausreichte um sie auf sein Pferd zu helfen.

A few weeks later I witnessed the most stunning wedding I had ever seen in my young life. And it happened right in front of me.

Ein paar Wochen später war ich Zeuge der schönsten Hochzeit, die ich je in meinem jungen Leben gesehen hatte. Und es geschah direkt vor mir.

The young ravens stayed in the area and two years later one of them showed his mate the tree he grew up in. Obviously, she liked me too, because shortly after they started to build their own nest.
