    Sweet Shipwreck - Jak MARTIN

    Sweet Shipwreck Introduction

Eight of us were going for a fun weekend of swimming, laughing, and eating. The two-man crew knew these waters well and were going to provide a fun time. I had to save to afford this trip. Plain fare, hotels, and the excursion added up to a lot, but it was going to be worth it.

    Chapter 1

It was daylight, rolling on my side so my shoulder could block the sun worked until my natural alarm clock went off. A Toucan called to me every morning at sunrise with its loud call to get up. My eyes opened to the blinding sun. The swaying palm tree branches hid the sun for a brief moment. It was time to get up. My bed, soon to be upgraded was under a partially finished open-air hut. Strolled seemed like such an old fashion word, but it perfectly described my walk to the edge of the bay. I was barefoot and the sand was already warm. Other than being stuck on this island, the view of the bay with the slight ripples looking like gold nuggets reflecting the sun's rays, made it seem like a magical time.

I was half-daydreaming when Brandy went past me without saying a word. She kicked off her flip-flops that she had found on the ship and proceeded into the water. Frayed shorts and a gray and blue shirt were her attire. She had a piece of wood, that looked like a tray, a bar of soap, and a washcloth taken from the ship. She went out a little above waist-deep in the water.

Brandy kept her back to the shore and me. She knew I was watching her as she took off her shirt and washed. All of a sudden I felt stinging on my legs and looked down There was an ant bed under my feet. Taking my mind off Brandy, I ran into the water and the stinging stopped.

Brandy heard the commotion and looked to see. By the time I had gathered my composure, she had quickly turned around and was putting her shirt back on. My dreams of what she looked like were dashed. I looked past her and saw a fin sticking out above the water. Shark! she turned to see, twirled around, and started back to shore.

The shark kept coming. We humans walking or running through water are not nearly as fast as a fish. I yelled, Brandy! keep the tray between you and the shark. Luckily there was a long stiff branch next to me and I started out to meet her. The shark opened its jaws wide and took a big bite out of the tray and turned away for a moment. By then we were next to each other. The shark turned and came again. This time taking my heavy branch and with all my might hit the shark between the eyes. This time, stunned, it turned and left.

We made our way back to the beach, Brandy put on her flip-flops, said thanks, and left. Thanks, was all that came out of her mouth. She was inches from
