    OVERVIEW

    Emotional Intelligence 2.0 is a self-help style book about identifying the reader's strengths and weaknesses in various areas of emotional intelligence and providing tools for improving emotional intelligence skills. It is an expansion on the 2004 book The Emotional Intelligence Quick Book and is based on the authors' online Emotional Intelligence Appraisal.

    Emotional intelligence, or EQ, is the ability to acknowledge and comprehend emotion. High emotional intelligence results in better management and awareness of a person’s own emotions, the two features of personal EQ competence that can help the subject prevent emotions from dictating behavior in emotional hijackings. Emotional intelligence also involves social competence, comprised of the awareness of other people's emotions and management of relationships. Unlike intelligence quotient (IQ) and personality, EQ scores can be increased through observation and relationships with high-EQ individuals.

    Methods of improving a person’s emotional self-awareness include better observing the distant effects of specific emotions, keeping an emotion journal, preventing good or bad moods from skewing perspective, thinking through a situation before reacting in an emotion-driven way, remembering and upholding values, and observing the physical and emotional side effects of stress. Strategies for improving a person’s emotional self-management include informing others of goals, taking a break to consider how to respond to a situation, getting restful sleep, monitoring self-talk for negativity, and planning for
