Brain Hacks - How To Boost Your Brain Power And Improve Performance - Piper Ramsey
Chapter 1: Understanding How Your Brain Works
With billions upon billions of connections and nearly limitless storage capacity, the brain is by far the most powerful computer on the planet. There are still many things we don't fully understand about our brains, but we are learning more and more as time goes on. And with each new discovery, there are new ways to extract more from our grey matter and improve our performance.
The good news is that all of this information is now freely available, and you don't have to go through years of complex experiments and research to discover all of the secrets. In fact, this chapter will serve as a comprehensive primer to get you up to speed on your mind...
But a word of caution: this is complicated stuff. You can skip this chapter if you just want to get to the good stuff and start learning how to get more from your brain. However, I strongly advise against it because it will give you a much better understanding of what's going on inside your skull and thus give you more autonomy when it comes to discovering new ways to tap into your cranium's near-limitless potential.
Neurons
The first thing to realize is that your brain is composed of billions of neurons. Neurons are 'brain cells,' and they function in the same way that any other cell in your body does. They have a cell membrane (the wall that surrounds the cell), a soma (the body of the cell) filled with cytoplasm (fluid), mitochondria to provide energy, and a nucleus that contains your DNA.
However, brain cells contain a few 'extras.' Brain cells, in particular, have axons and dendrites. The axons are the long 'tails' that protrude from the back of your brain cells. Dendrites, on the other hand, resemble routes or tendrils that extend across the brain from the soma. Dendrites' job is to find the axons of other cells and connect to them.
Neurons come in a variety of shapes and sizes. While they are microscopic, they will occasionally form connections by stretching all the way from one brain 'region' to another. Brain cells do not actually touch, but instead leave a small gap known as the 'synaptic gap,' through which communication occurs.
An 'action potential' occurs when a brain cell lights up or fires. A small electrical current jump from the synaptic 'knob' to one or more connecting dendrites at this point. This is how signals travel through the brain.
When a neuron fires in this manner, it corresponds to some kind of subjective experience in the brain. For example, one area of the brain – the occipital lobe – is entirely dedicated to vision. When neurons in this region fire, it causes light
