    Chapter 1

Skye’s head hurt today , worse than it had in a long time.  If she were to describe the pain it would be like someone was sticking an ice pick into the back of her head and thrusting it in an upward direction towards the front of her head.  She sat in her car trying to remember through the pain what she had come here for.  Finally, she gathered her purse and headed toward the grocery store hoping that walking the aisles would jar her memory of what she needed.  She kept repeating to herself the few items she could remember Peanut butter, butter, Nutella, bread, and milk.

She grabbed a cart and headed toward the produce section.  Standing there in the produce section she looked around thinking do I need anything from here.  After a few seconds of confusion, she remembered her niece loved the baby carrots.  Closing her eyes, she tried to picture the items in the refrigerator without success.  Oh well, I’ll pick some up they’ll get eaten at least.

Pulling a bag of baby carrots from the cooler she turned around and dropped them into her cart.  Moving up and down aisles that didn’t have anything on them that was on the list she could remember she finally picked up the few items she could remember and headed for the checkout.  Her head pounding even harder she was starting to see little black spots in the corner of her right eye.  Oh, this is so not good.

As she stood in line she could feel her body wanting to shut down.  Not now, not here wait till I get home, Please Lord.  She didn’t pay any attention to the other customers in line with her as her body started to sweat, her breathing became more labored, her legs started to weaken and she knew in that instant this wasn’t going to wait.  "Fuck Me!"  She exclaimed as her legs gave way and she headed towards the floor right there in the checkout lane of the grocery store.

Her body started twitching as she crashed into something hard and soft at the same time.  It wasn’t the solid hard of a floor, but the solid of a man’s muscular chest.  The man lowered her to the floor as her body took on movements that were almost unnatural.  Her eyes rolled upward as her body continued to twitch uncontrollably.  Unbeknownst to her the man stayed by her side as she rode out the storm her body was putting her through.

Hunter had been in the grocery store picking up a few items before he headed back home to drink a few beers with the guys and relax.  He’d gotten in line and been trying to work up the nerve to ask the sexy woman in front of him out when she’d paled and started into a seizure.  He’d deposited the few items he’d picked up when she started looking like she was going to pass out.  When she fell straight into his waiting arms he laid her gently on the floor as the other customers stared at them.  Finally, the cashier asked Do I need to call for help?

Hunter looked up at her No shit Sherlock.  Yes, she’s having a seizure.  He quickly replied nodding an affirmative that the cashier needed to get help.

As the cashier spoke into her little walkie talkie for an ambulance Hunter waited for the seizure to pass keeping an eye on if she was breathing or not.  He was timing the seizure as he noticed that she had stopped breathing, not realizing that he was holding his own breath he let out a long breath when she started breathing again.

As the EMT’s showed up Hunter gave them a quick rundown of what happened and identified himself as a medic.  He didn’t want to bring too much attention so he’d left off the part of being a SEAL.  He asked if he could go with her to the hospital and when they agreed he quickly grabbed her purse and helped them get her into the ambulance.

Skye woke up as she was being lifted into the ambulance and started to fight the personnel, she didn’t want to go to the hospital.  When all of the sudden a young man’s face peered over her and those emerald green eyes smiled at her and he said Sorry doll, but you really need to go.

She heard the ambulance doors close and the siren wailing as they started towards the hospital.  I’m so fucked!

Hunter helped the EMT to put in the IV line after the medic had missed twice.  She was impressed he hit the vein on the first try while the vehicle was moving erratically through traffic.  Hunter listened as the EMT asked her all the basic neurological questions and she answered them.  When she started to answer the questions about herself for the paperwork he found out she was only twenty-two, she didn’t look twenty-two she looked more like his age of twenty-five, but he probably didn’t look twenty-five with all the stress that he’d been through since he’d first enlisted in the Navy at eighteen.  He thought back to what he was doing when he was twenty-two he’d been with the SEALs for several years and had signed up for another four years.  What was she shopping for he wondered her cart had looked like a pile of miscellaneous items.

They arrived at the hospital and he followed her into the curtain area that the nurse pointed them into.  As the EMT’s transferred her from their stretcher onto the hospital gurney and left, he stayed.  This made her head hurt worse trying to comprehend why this medic stayed didn’t he belong to the ambulance company?

The nurse came in and brought her a gown and instructed her to change into it and the doctor would be in shortly.  Skye looked at Hunter with a confused look.  What?  He asked her as she looked at him.  Would you like me to step out while you change?

Uh, yes I really would, but my legs feel like Jell-O and I don’t know how I’ll get into this gown without help.  Do you think it would be awkward for me to ask you for some help?  She answered back quietly.

No Ma’am, it’s not awkward for me, now for you on the other hand it might be awkward.  He said in a chuckling voice as he walked over to the bed offering her his hand.  She undid her bra and pulled her t-shirt up and over her head.  He opened the gown for her to put on as he turned his head to give her some privacy.  Then he helped her stand so that she could take off her jeans and steady herself against him.  The last item she took off was a single ball bearing chain with a single dog tag on it.  As she removed it she gave it a gentle kiss before putting it with her other clothes.  After he helped her back onto the gurney he headed over to the chair in the corner to wait for the doctor.

After almost an hour the doctor finally arrived to check on Skye.  Hunter stepped outside the curtain while the doctor talked with Skye and ordered several tests to be done.  While he was waiting for the doctor to finish up with her and give his account of what had happened during her seizure he called his teammate and friend, Cowboy.

Hey man can you do me a favor?

    Sure man, what ya need?

I need you and Able to go to the store and pick up my Jeep and bring it to me at the hospital.

Wait, are you in the hospital?

Nah man it’s a long story.

Oh, this is one I’m definitely going to have to hear.  Cowboy said as he chuckled into the phone.

I’ll send you the address of where it’s at and where I’m at ok and see you two in an hour.  He said hanging up on his friend.

Finally, the doctor wanted to talk to him about the whole incident while he sent Skye for an MRI and some blood work was drawn.  When he listened to Hunter’s description of what had happened he thanked him for being there and thinking quickly where most people would have panicked.  Hunter only replied I’m a Navy corpsman I don’t panic anymore.  The doctor thanked him for his service and
