CHAPTER 1
Five days before Christmas, Baltimore’s city streets were busy with cars and shoppers. Homes and buildings were decorated for the season with wreaths and bright lights. Everyone was excited about the upcoming holiday.
One bright, chilly afternoon, Michael and Gary played outside their front door.
Michael and Gary,
their mother called, please come in the house for a minute.
When they went inside, their six-year-old sister, Cindy, worked on her schoolwork at the kitchen table.
Would you two like to go with us to the grocery store?
asked Mom.
Not this time, Mom,
answered Michael. I want to play outside for a while.
Me, too,
said Gary. I want to stay outside and ride my bike.
Okay. You may stay home. I’ll call Mrs. Benson next door so she can keep an eye on you two while I’m gone.
Thanks, Mom,
said Michael.
You’re the best!
said Gary.
When your sister Lori comes home from afternoon band practice, ask her to start preparing our supper. She can peel potatoes. We’ll have French fries and vegan burgers for supper.
Okay. We’ll let Lori know,
replied Michael.
Goody,
exclaimed Cindy. I’m glad you two aren’t going to the grocery store.
Why is that?
asked Michael.
Because,
said Cindy, you know the rule. Whoever goes to the grocery store with Mom can pick out their favorite cereal for the whole family.
What will you pick?
asked Gary.
I bet you know which one I’m going to get,
said Cindy.
Oh no, please don’t tell me you’re going to get that boring Rice Crispy cereal,
Gary protested.
