    Chapter 1

    Peet and Louisa lived with their grandparents in rural Edgecombe County, North Carolina. Their mother worked and lived in Baltimore.

    On a bright, sunny afternoon, Peet sat on one of the swings made by her Grandpa. She was eight-years-old. Her sister, Louisa, who was six-years-old, sat next to her in another swing in the backyard.

    Mmm, do you smell that honeysuckle vine? asked Louisa.

    I sure do, Peet said. It smells terrific.

    When we finish swinging, do you want to taste some of those blackberries over there? asked Louisa.

    Oh, yeah! Peet happily agreed. Now, let’s see who can swing the highest.

    Me. me. I can do it! Louisa declared.

    Their mother arrived home on the Amtrak train from Baltimore after staying there for two months. She saw the girls playing outside. Standing on the porch, she called to them.

    Peet and Louisa, I’m home! Come in the house and let Mama see you, she said.

    There’s Mama, Louisa bellowed. "Come on, Peet, let’s go
