    During a sleep cycle, there are two distinct Modes and four unique Stages.

    REM – Rapid Eye Movement mode

    The minor portion of sleep

    Dreams occur (resemble waking life)

    Fast brain waves, eye movement

    Loss of muscle tone (near-paralysis) to prevent us from acting out our dreams

    NREM – Non-Rapid Eye Movement mode

    The most significant portion of sleep

    Heart rate falls

    The brain uses less energy

    Regeneration occurs
