Introduction
Mom! Mom! Mooommm!
My five-year-old cries out from his bed just after ten at night. His bedroom is lit only by the soft glow of a salt lamp, and the sound of crickets chirping plays from the sound machine. After a long day of playing outside with the new toy chainsaw he got for his birthday, Easton fell asleep right in the middle of watching a movie. Soon, his daddy tucked him in and turned off the movie, so he was a little disoriented when he woke up to a dark room. He hadn’t realized he had fallen asleep and the movie was over.
Naturally, in my fresh postpartum anxiety haze, my first thought when I hear him crying out is that he is sick or something bad is going to happen. I bolt into his room and kneel down beside the bottom bunk. I find him in his bed sitting straight up and ask him what’s wrong. He is still half asleep and having a hard time forming an intelligible sentence, so in my mom panic I pick him up and sweep him off to the bathroom just in case he has to go potty or throw up. We get into the bathroom and in the light I’m better able to assess the situation. He tells me that he’s fine. He’s not sick; he just didn’t know where he was when he woke up. I take comfort in the fact that nobody is going to vomit and sigh with relief. I give him a hug, settle him down, and head back into the bedroom with him. I start his movie back up so he can attempt to see the ending before falling asleep again.
He is five years old—today is his birthday. I can’t believe that we’ve been parents for five years already or that the Lord has blessed us with not one but three children in those five years. As I tuck him back into bed and sweep my fingers through his sandy blond hair, he slowly blinks his bright blue eyes and cracks a little half-smile. Easton has a smile that can brighten up any room, the kind that’s so contagious you can’t help but to smile back. My husband is convinced that his smile is so bright because of the innocence he has as a child—the innocence that we are devoted to protecting for as long as we can.
Before I leave the bedroom, I check on his little sister. I hear her quiet snores coming from the top bunk. She’s sound asleep with her head buried underneath her pillow. She’s kicked off her blanket, so I cover her back up and she groans as she pulls her arms back out and rolls over. Her eyes open just long enough to scan the bed and make sure that her pacifier is still close by in case she’ll need it. She has only been asleep for about an hour, but her blond curls are already in a big mess on her head. I chuckle quietly at her bedhead, knowing all too well that I’ll need to tackle the mess with a brush and a whole lot of conditioner in the morning. Everly just turned two years old a few weeks ago. She is as tough as they come, with the tenacity and personality to match her strength. She’s always trying her hardest to keep up with Easton,
