Introduction

It was summertime and it increased the urge for one to bask in the bright glow of the sun as it revitalised the senses. The fresh breeze flew by invisibly but could be felt on the skin. It was a beautiful, calm and peaceful summer’s day. There was a hint of saltiness in the air due to the sea.

Melisha Singh could hear the sound of the waves as they danced on the shore and then hit against the rocks. The warm sand beneath her feet calmed her at every step. She stopped and turned to her right and looked at the vast ocean before her. The sight almost took her breath away. She watched the rays of the sun fall onto the water in the distance as if the heavens had opened and it looked as if a passage had opened to enter into the spiritual realm. Nature’s art made it look as if the rays of the sun had been touched with glitter as it sparkled in the distance and created a scenery that was breathtakingly beautiful. The warmth of the sun ignited her senses and made her feel energised and one with nature. She smiled with triumph as she remembered the days, months and years gone by. It was a journey that life had taken her on. There were many obstacles along her way but she had won the battles and the wars that came before her.

She looked intently at the ocean before her. It was huge and so much of it was unexplored just like how we go through our daily activities not knowing that maybe life has something better out there, maybe we deserve more and if you believe and have faith in God, he will take us on a journey we never thought we could ever dream of. Melisha knew she went through many challenges in her life. She had seen it all and was thrown into the fires that the challenges of life had ignited and pulled her into. The fires that she was pulled into had restructured her and when the fire was put out, she went through a process of refinement. She would sometimes be reminded of all the moments that brought her to this point. When she looked back at her life, she remembered the times when she thought that she would not be able to make it, when she thought she was going to be pushed deeper and deeper into the depths of the ocean as if she was drowning in her own sorrows.

The ocean looked beautiful and peaceful with no worries. She wondered if the sea creatures experienced the heartaches that human beings had to undergo. Were all living creatures forced into an exile of worries or were human beings unique to the trials and tribulations of life? She saw a dolphin in the distance coming up for air before going back into the sea and swimming away. It looked as if it had no cares in the world, as if it was leaping for joy and savouring every moment of its life. She looked at other people around her and wondered if their smiles were real or if they camouflaged their pain from the world as a mechanism to tune out life’s heartaches. Melisha found herself going back in time to her youth years. She would go to the beach with her family. On a Sunday, they would pack a picnic basket and head out for the day. She would run on the beach with two buckets in her hands, one filled with water and another filled with sea sand. She would construct the sandcastles with joy as little things would bring her happiness. That was after her fear of water had subsided. She didn’t always make friends with the ocean. It was not her favourite thing to look at when she was younger before her adolescent years came about.

She remembered when she was about eight years old when she went for swimming lessons with other students from her school. She walked onto the tiled floors wearing her swimming costume with her goggles on. Every step made her cringe with fear as she walked closer and closer to the thing that she wanted to avoid. She was now in front of it. It was long and wide and it stood before her, waiting for her to go into it. Melisha felt scared as she stood before the pool in front of her. She wanted to run away and not go any further. She could feel the tears welling up in her eyes but they could not be seen through the goggles. She could hear the teachers asking them to go into the pool. They didn’t realise her anxiousness. She stood frozen in the same spot and could not move forward as fear gripped her at the sight before her. She could feel someone touch her shoulder and she immediately came back to her senses. Her teacher prompted her to go into the water. She slowly sat down and put her legs into the water and then she was in it. She felt as if she couldn’t breathe. She held onto the rails of the pool for dear life and refused to learn how to swim. She did that the entire lesson and waited to come out and run from the water that was making her feel suffocated with every moment she was in it. Her teacher stood by her, sensing her disturbed look. She knew she was not alone, yet the fear of the water before her made her feel as if it was pulling her in and there she was hanging on for dear life.

Melisha snapped out of the memory as her phone rang. It was her mum. She spoke to her for a while and then she got lost again in the ocean. She was older now; the fear of water had gone. She walked towards the vast ocean and she put her feet into it and felt the soapy, salty waves hit her every time she walked along it. She loved the ocean now. The fears of the past had become a blessing in the future. The water that once strangled her with fear had now calmed her spirit when she looked at it. The fear that she had held onto into her youth was now a blessing.

Melisha looked before her and got soaked in nature and then she turned around and looked at the mountain behind her. It looked calm as it stared at the sea with its rocky hills and trees that surrounded it. She found herself mesmerised by the way it lay directly opposite the sea before her. They were so different and yet they shared the same area, only a short distance apart. The mountain and the sea were opposite neighbours yet they never touched each other but they stared at each other, watching each other but never embracing unless a tsunami suddenly comes from the sea. They would then meet until the waters calmed and then part ways as the sea went back to its original place. The mountain and sea were like humans that meet and part ways.

Melisha kept going back in time as she looked around her and the memories flowed within her mind, reminding her of the events that played a role in getting her to where she was at that point. She knew that through many obstacles, guides came along her way and then parted ways with her to steer her onto the path God chose for her and that would be the path that would one day lead back to the place she travelled from. She was on an adventure in this world and when she fulfilled it, her beloved one from the heavens would come to fetch her and take her back to her resting place after she fulfilled her destiny. She believed he wrote everything that would happen to her on Earth and all good things were from him. She sat down on the golden beach sand and then her thoughts started to wander as usual to the book that held the secrets to her creation, the scriptures that were sacred and true to her, the Holy Bible. The scriptures fascinated her as a child and she was inspired by the faith Jesus had. God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit were one to her. Whether she used their names separately or together, to her they were all one and the same. She knew that the journey to God takes time and one needed faith and belief, even if it was a little to help you through the perils of life. If you cannot overcome life’s challenges by having unshakeable faith, you will never journey to God. Your journey would no longer be towards God, instead you will be lost with no direction to guide you back to the correct path.

Melisha knew, based on her experiences, that the challenges presented to us can be viewed as tests that come upon us to reveal the strength of our faith and belief we have in God and the ability to know without any doubt that we can overcome anything through him. This belief is knowing that God will never desert us and will eliminate all obstacles if we just believe him. She opened the journal in front of her and jotted down her journey and the events that led her to the Lord Jesus Christ and the belief that he loved her with an eternal everlasting love. The visitations from him would prove to be the most beautiful encounters she ever experienced.

Years ago…

Melisha grew up in South Africa. She grew up in a beautiful town, most of the time it was sunny with blue skies. She was a quiet girl, obedient to her parents. Melisha was the youngest of three children. She never knew much about religion as she was always given two sides of it. Her father was a non-believer and her mother came from a Christian home. It’s not that her father told her what to believe in but it also caused confusion at a tender age in terms of which side was the righteous path. She was always undecided about which religion to follow. According to tradition, she was told that she needed to follow her father’s religion as that was the right thing to do in the eyes of society. Melisha did that as a child and followed the rules of society.

However, her journey was going nowhere. She would pray and she would not get any answers, no feedback, no sense of peace. Melisha was always in two minds. She blamed God for everything bad that happened in her life, not realising that she was hurting the one who loved her the most. One would blame it on the rebelliousness of being a teenager or maybe a lack of knowledge of what she was doing. Her accusations were towards God whom she did not know. She used to fight with God all the time but he never judged her back. He never punished her but loved her unconditionally but she just could not see it.

She used to spend time at her grandparents’ home on the weekends and that is when a whole new world was presented to her. Her grandfather was the evangelist of the church and her grandmother used to pray very deeply and was a spiritual woman with a lot of time for God. She used to see miracles being performed and this caught her attention. Then one Saturday, multiple churchgoers came to her grandfather’s house and they were deep in prayer. Melisha decided to listen to them preach about the gospel and to see why they were content on the path they were on. She closed her eyes and did what they did and during the service she opened her eyes slowly and then fully, and she could see that they were deep in prayer, so she also mimicked them. After that day, a new awakening of God filled her and she decided to turn her life around. She never knew where this path would lead her but she was going to believe and see what happened. She was at an age of immaturity and didn’t know that this was the beginning of something great. What started off as going on this path to test it would someday lead her to her faith and belief.

The years went by and the new year arrived. Many people that Melisha knew were celebrating the arrival of another year and they were filled with hopes and expectations of the new year bringing them better successes and happiness, especially if the previous one was not good. Melisha hoped for the same. The year started off with new resolutions. She had just registered to study further a few weeks after the beginning of the year and she looked at it as a sign of new things to come. Many challenges came her way during the months that passed. She knew that she could not afford it but she felt the need to pursue her dreams and to achieve what she planned to study.

People are often faced with challenges and depending on one’s tolerance levels, we can look at a situation and determine whether we have reached a point of walking away or staying back. Quitting is not a sign of weakness but depending on the circumstances, we can get through it if we believe. Belief comes from knowing that something will happen as per your belief even if the situation contradicts it. Sometimes, it may seem impossible to even get through a problem that may arise but we fail to realise that there is someone out there who can change
