I went out in uniform to help with some routine traffic stops. We get called in for some random help in the area, and are happy to step up. The problem is, people don’t always believe we’re actual soldiers. The number of times I’ve been mistaken for a stripper is crazy.

On one of the traffic stops I pull over this sports car, flashy. A young guy was driving, and he was a completely spoilt brat. The woman he was with was twice his age and at first I thought it was his thing. I could totally get it. She was hot. Turns out she’s his step mum, and they’re just on the way home after a week at their holiday home. The rest of the family was following in a separate vehicle. All the while I’m asking the young guy questions, checking his documents, I can feel her watching me. I drop his license on the floor, bend to pick it up. She grins and winks as I glance at her as I return them to him.

He is oblivious. Impatience and arrogance distracting him from our subtle, or maybe not so subtle, body language.

As he pulled away, she pushed her sunglasses up, winked at me, reached out her arm and gently dropped a business card in my hand. Smiling, she waved as they drove away.

‘The car? Yeah.’

‘Not the car mate. You know who that is, right?’

I looked at the business card ‘Carlotta Moore’ ‘Lawyer’ in neat gold lettering.

‘Shit. I guess she’ll be complaining we pulled her son over without good reason.’

‘Doubt it. She’s a big player. Traffic stops are well below her pay grade.’

I laughed it off, but made sure I tucked the card deep in my pocket so it wouldn’t get lost. At that point, I had no intention of ringing her. I don’t think.
