    SHE LET ME WATCH

Iwatched as he led her through to the back, guessed what was going to happen, but needed to see for myself. I’d worked in the bar for about three weeks. At first I was so busy learning that I missed all the comings and goings. Now I knew most of the locals, the cocktail recipes and how to fix things when they got glitchy. I could take a breath between the usual rushes and lulls that happen in a city centre bar. We were at our busiest straight after the offices turned out, around six. At about seven, we got the influx of staff who dressed that bit richer. Monogrammed cuffs instead of high street. Rolexs, not smart watches, branded spirits instead of beers or house wine. These were the tippers. It was the hour when I could double my wages if I smiled at the right customers. One of my managers generously showed me the ropes, told me how to identify the time wasters. How to weed out the guys who would take what they could get and abuse you for making them wait. But there was one last trick she hadn’t shown me. Now she was leaving. She was happy to hand over the baton and tonight was my chance to see how she could afford to go travelling for a year without taking out a loan or credit card. I waited a few minutes after she’d gone back to the office to ‘check out some paperwork.’ We didn’t do paperwork. The manager came in at about nine to complete all that and supervise the bar through to the end of the night. The guy had walked to the men’s room. There was a door from the office in that corridor. I served a regular. He smiled, touched my palm as he dropped his credit card in my hand. I made eye contact and then blinked it away as I took his payment and busied myself with keeping the bar tidy. Curious about what was going on in the back with all that paperwork. I walked to the end of the bar and glanced towards the office. I was the only one could see down the corridor. She’d left the office door open as promised. The dark corridor led my eyes to the light beyond. I saw her walk out of sight behind the door, then back into my line of sight. This time with a guy. The same guy who had just gone to the men’s room. I expected her to drop to her
