    Chapter 1

    Drew Lockhart looked down at the letter but couldn’t understand what he was reading. His application to the Stony Lake Country Club had been denied. That was practically impossible. Every lawyer at this firm was automatically approved for membership. After all, he worked at the largest law firm in the county, and the third-largest in the state. The country club was even one of the firm’s clients.

    Drew made doodles on the letter as he waited on hold. He had immediately called the country club and was waiting to speak to the club’s president. After dialing the number, he got up and shut his door so that his secretary wouldn’t hear the conversation. He had told her about applying—in fact, she had submitted the application for him—and she had congratulated him when handing him the letter. He would never be able to admit that he had been turned down for membership.

    Hello? a masculine voice said on the other end of the line.

    "Hi, this is Drew Lockhart. I’m an associate at Sterner and Goodyear LLP. The law firm."

    The voice on the other end was unimpressed with this information and remained silent.

    Hello? Are you there?

    Yes, Mr. Lockhart. I’m right here in my office with my phone pressed to my ear. What can we do for you?

    It’s this application, you see? Drew looked down and saw that he had sketched out the silhouette of a woman in a dress. It looked a lot like his wife, Tammy. I think there was a mistake. I submitted an application and received a letter informing me that I had been rejected. But I work at Sterner and Goodyear, you see.

    That was no mistake, the man said, chuckling slightly. I can assure you that you received the correct letter. We rejected you because we did not see that you had sufficient ties to the community. You graduated from law school in Pennsylvania, correct.
