THERE’S nothing that brings a significant moment or period in history quite to life like someone telling their personal story of how it affected them. This week we have one of those special insights into a period in time that’s still remembered with the horror it warrants.

On page 78 we hear about the life of Ella Blumenthal, who was held in Nazi concentration camps when she was a young woman. She experienced immense loss, deep degradation and the kind of trauma and suffering few of us can comprehend.

Ella’s moving story reminded me of the strength and resilience of human beings. Despite everything she’d been through she wanted to live her life to the fullest – and live it she has, even with its challenges. She married South African Isaac Blumenthal and moved to Brakpan, starting a family and building a future.
