    Chapter 1

    Oh God.

    Heather’s heart hammered in her chest as she peeked around the curtain at the gigantic crowd sitting at tables on the gym floor. Tonight was the high school’s public auction to raise funds for the senior class, and Heather had ridiculously agreed to be auctioned off as a prize.

    At first, she had thought she would auction an old yearbook she had found in her mother’s attic. But when she brought the book to the auction’s organizer, Pamela MacTeer, she could not avoid the shock on the other woman’s face.

    "You want to auction…that?"

    No, Heather had said quickly. I just wanted to show it to you. I mean, don’t you think it’s interesting. It’s very old…and, I don’t know….

    Pam had swallowed and clutched her clipboard to her chest. Okay. Yeah, it’s a really old yearbook. I’m pretty sure no one in it is alive, but whatever. She then narrowed her eyes and seemed to sweep up and down Heather’s body. So what do you propose to auction? I mean, to help the seniors with their fundraising?

    And Heather had been completely stumped. Because she didn’t have anything at all of value to auction. All she had was herself.

    Pam had leaned in confidentially and suggested that she offer a dinner out for a lucky member of the audience.

    Are you serious? Heather’s face had begun to warm immediately. In fact, she must have looked alarmed because Pam had reached out and touched her arm.

    "It’s nothing, Heather. You just agree to have dinner with someone. The men…you know the men in this town. It’s all a big joke. Someone will bid on you for say, fifty bucks or something, and you have dinner. You can even bring your husband the lucky bidder will bring his wife. A big
