Ashley and Dakota are best friends who desired to head out of town to the large state university. Both girls’ families’ available budget it seemed to make it look like they would have to stay at home and attend the local small college. That was ok with Ashley but Dakota really wanted to get out of her dysfunctional home and start living. While the two girls were best friends they were very different. Ashley was shy and reserved. Her conservative upbringing had kept her separated from the other girls in high school and only Dakota seemed to see past her frumpy looks and simple ways. Dakota was out going and blunt. She too was on the fringe of the popular girls in the school and drew close to Ashley, seeing her as a project for her to mould and shape.
The girls were ready to give up as their small budget covered tuition costs but was far too small to cover the residence hall costs. A chance posting on a housing bulletin board in the campus administration caught their eye and after a few quick emails with the land lord they went to check out a home with rooms to rent. The home was that of Mr. Randy Johnson, a semi-retired widower who had decided to open his house to a few students. He did not financially need to rent the rooms and made the decision to open them up to girls of need. Ashley and Dakota definitely met the requirements.

Ashley and Dakota’s feet echoed off the floor of the large cold administration building. The hall was bustling with others like them looking to register for college in the fall. The campus visit was the first trip out of town alone by the two since they graduated from High School together and Ashley was nervous at the thought of moving out of her safe home.

The two could not have been a more unlikely pair. Ashley was conservative, wearing baggy jeans from a thrift store a size too large and a baggy t- shirt even though it was June and the temperature outside was close to 95 degrees, while Dakota wore short cut off jean shorts and a form fitting camisole that showed the world all her youthful body had to offer. Ashley was quiet and shy while Dakota was out going and wild.

Are you sure you want to come to school here, Dakota. There is a college in town that is so much closer to home. Ashley asks her best and only real friend.

Not only do I want to come here, I need to come here. You know what it is like at my house with my Mom planning the wedding and Brad always there staring at me. I need to get out of that house soon. You need this too, Ashley. You need to get out and see the real world and not live in your cocoon of a life you have lived so far. Dakota replied as they looked through the course guides on a table outside the admissions office.

Ashley knew Dakota was right so some things. Things were getting uncomfortable for her at home. Her Mom had divorces a few years ago and had met a new guy named Brad. He had proposed to her Mom a few months ago and Dakota was feeling like a third wheel in their house. Her Mom was making her feel unwelcome and at time’s Brad seemed to pay more attention to Dakota than her Mom; the kind of attention that was not always welcome like extended hugs or lecherous looks.

On the other hand, Ashley did not think she lived as sheltered a life as her friend always implied. Sure she was home schooled until she started high school in 9th grade. And their family severely limited the exposure she had to television or movies. She was not allowed to date until she
