Roy Bennett

Roy Bennett was born in Swansea, Wales in October 1944. In August of 1966 he married Bernadette and they immigrated to Toronto Canada. Roy was a Tool and Die maker and quickly found employment with Rothmans Cigarette Company where he remained for twenty years. Roy and Bernadette have two sons and five grandsons. Never having had any religious teaching as a child, Roy had been an agnostic all his adult life until, one night, in a small United Church he found himself surrounded by the presence of the God he had denied all his life. In an instant he was transformed from an unbeliever to a zealot for God.

    Foreword

In these days of affluence, science, technology and instant gratification, we rarely recognize God at work in our lives. Most Christians would love to have been around to witness Jesus feeding the five thousand, walking on water, or healing the sick, because today, especially in our Western society, miracles are rarely seen or acknowledged. This is because we have so many other choices available that appeal to our natural senses; we choose them rather than believing God’s word and depending on Him to provide. It is only when we have exhausted all other alternatives; when money won’t provide the solution; when doctors can do no more; when our situation seems impossible that we turn to God for help, and even then, we are skeptical that He will answer. The Bible gives endless examples of God providing for His people; He never changes, so if we are not experiencing these same things today, it is because our thinking has changed, not God’s love and His willingness to provide for us.

When Jesus sent His disciples out, He told them to take nothing with them because He wanted them to depend on Him to provide for them; this would build their faith in a God they had never seen. Jesus also said that it would be harder for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven than for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle. He knew that while people have money and the power that comes with it, they would rely on it to meet their needs and not God. The Israelites could have crossed the desert to the Promised Land in a few days, but because they failed to trust the God who had proven Himself so many times, they had to spend forty unhappy years in the desert.

Things haven’t changed today. Despite the fact that we have these examples to learn from, we still fail to trust God, and this results in unnecessary worry and stress. I believe that when we doubt God’s ability to provide for our every need, it is a serious sin and an insult that hurts Him deeply. God gave His only begotten Son, who in turn suffered unbearable pain and suffering so we could enjoy the benefits of being God’s children. If we don’t avail ourselves of these benefits, then His sacrifice was in vain. I am a loving father, and I know that if either of my sons had a genuine need and asked for my help I would do everything in my power to meet that need. God loves His children far more than we could ever comprehend, and His resources are limitless, so to doubt His willingness to provide for our every need is to doubt His love for us.

One time on an Alpha Holy Spirit weekend, I had given a message on receiving spiritual gifts. I made an appeal for people who would like to receive any gift from God to come forward, but no one did. I stood off to the side and suddenly had a vision of God with His arms full of gifts, all wrapped up like Christmas presents, and He was bringing them to the people, but the people were all turning and walking away from Him. Tears were streaming down His face because He had paid an enormous price for these gifts: They cost Him His only begotten Son, Jesus. As I stood and watched Him cry, I could feel His disappointment and started to weep uncontrollably.

I was finally able to pull myself together enough to describe to the group what I had just seen and felt inside; this triggered a reaction in many of those present. Some were saved, while others received the gift of the Holy Spirit. More than anything else, God wants us to trust Him to take care of all our needs. Jesus told us to cast all our cares on Him because His burden is light; we need to do that if we want to see Him work in our lives and enjoy the peace and joy He has for us.

I wanted to write this book so that others, Christians and non-Christians, would realize that God still performs miracles in the lives of those who trust Him. In the majority of these stories, I had no other option but to trust God to provide; it seems that when we find ourselves in a helpless situation, God steps in and provides. There is an important lesson to be learned from this. If you step out of your comfort zone for God and place yourself in a position where your finances, resources, and abilities are stretched beyond your limitations, God will always provide as long as your desires are within His will. With God, all things are possible.

I pray that as you read these examples of God working in my life, they will encourage you to trust God in those impossible times. I also pray that you will be inspired to become a risk taker; dare to be like David and experience firsthand the God of wonders.

    Chapter 1

    My Piles of Stones

I will give thanks to you, Lord, with all my heart; I will tell of all your wonderful deeds.

    Psalm 9:1

For many years, I have thought about all the things that God has done in the lives of me and my wife since we first became born-again Christians. We have shared these stories with dozens of people over the years and have been continually encouraged to write a book so that others could know that God still works miracles in people’s lives, but I have never taken the time to document them in any formal fashion. These are testimonies of God’s presence in our lives and how they affect people’s lives; they minister, encourage, and amaze people whenever I tell them. I am frequently asked to share them with new people by those who have heard them before. Even my grandchildren bring their friends over and ask me to tell them the stories of what God has done; they love to hear them over and over.

I believe that it is time for me to put these wonders from God in a book so that as many people as possible can read about how God works in our everyday lives, if we just trust Him and obey His prompting. Many who have heard these stories ask why these sorts of things never happen in their lives. God is no respecter of persons; what He does for one He will do for others, given the opportunity. It is when we demonstrate our faith and trust in God that He confirms His love for us and fulfills His promise to always be there for us and take care of our every need. God is our heavenly Father and wants more than anything to provide for and take care of His children. I have learned in my latter years as a father that my greatest pleasure is to please my children. It’s as if the roles have changed. As a child, I wanted to please my parents; now as a parent with grown children, I find myself wanting more than anything else to do whatever I can for them to help and please them. If I, an earthly dad, desires to do that, how much more does our heavenly Father desire to do things for us?

Before crossing the Jordan River to enter the Promised Land, Joshua told the twelve tribes of Israel to take a rock each and pile them on the other side. Then he said, in Joshua 4:6, In the future, when your children ask you, ‘What do these stones mean?’ tell them that the flow of the Jordan was cut off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord. When it crossed the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. These stones are to be a memorial to the people of Israel forever.

God wants us to remember and tell others of the times in our lives when He has done something miraculous, so that others will be constantly reminded long after we have gone that God is alive and faithful to fulfill His promises. I like to think of each of these stories as a pile of stones, reminding readers that God worked in our lives and will work in theirs too.
