    Introduction

This book is fictional stories of many situations that could happen behind the chair in a Salon. It doesn’t matter if it is an upscale salon, a chain salon, or simply a down home country salon. Any of these stories could be labeled, Oh that happened to me within the content.

Having been in the industry for 54 years plus I have seen almost all of it. I am constantly amazed when things happen in the salon of which I have never experienced before. How many stylists have seen beaded hair? In all my years I have only seen it once. It truly feels like beads and was amazing.

These stories deal more with thoughts stylist run through their minds as you communicate with them about your service or personal life. If you were not aware the Cosmetology industry is only next to the medical field as far as the conversations, we have with our clients. They tell us things they would not tell their minister, husband, wife or doctor. Yet they want solutions, answers and be happy with their hair when they leave.

In our studies, we learn about the entire human body inside and out. However, what we do in the salon is assumed to be just hair, or skin and to include nails. We must be aware of many conditions before we can service a client. Because many conditions can either harm the client or be transmitted to us. We are not simply hair cutters.

This booklet skims the surface on salon situations however most are about hair color and how decisions are made. This book though filled with truth, is considered fiction.

It was difficult at first to write this book because as I allowed my clients to read about the different strengths their responses were: well, that happened to a friend of mine and when I allowed my hairstylist friends to read them, I usually received no response, because they felt it was about them personally. So please understand this is a fiction book. But could it be real?

It Was A Hot Summer Night

NATE CAREFULLY MOVED THE car closer to the curb and turned on to the first street he could find. He fumbled with the steering that seemed to be fighting him in an arm-wrestling contest. He was convinced this would not be a good day.

No spare tire in the trunk and now the one good tire was flat. He thought he may need to reconsider coming in to work.

It was his first week on the job and he was one mile away from the salon. He took a deep breath as he began to walk the final mile to the salon. In his mind, it seemed a flat tire was a poor excuse to be late for his first appointment.

As he walked, he remembered the high expectations he had after being hired to work in a salon that was upscale and progressive. The owner worked diligently to help him build a good customer base and immediately advertised him as their new employee to the public.

Nate knew it may be slow at first, but it was important to make a good impression and work hard to develop a customer base. His worries for today were a concern, but it was even more concerning on how he would get to work tomorrow and the day after.

Thoughts of his finances to keep up with expenses filled his mind and yet knew making that good first with his clients was the solution. As he crossed the street, he heard a car come close and lightly honk the horn at him. He turned to see why.

It was Chris the friend who referred him to work in the salon. What up dude? He asked. Why are you walking? Get in I will give you a ride. Were almost late you know?

Nate smiled as he climbed into the car, he breathed a sigh of relief. He would not be late after all. As they got closer to the salon, he noticed several clients walking in early for their appointments.

Entering the salon, the air gave a fragrance of fresh brewed coffee. They went into the dispensary first to prep for the day and saw that John the salon manager had poured his first cup.

Chris cringed as he watched him put his usual three spoons of sugar in his coffee. John looked at him and said, its’ going to be a busy day I need the energy.

Nate said, hey Chris I will pour your first cup as a payback for the ride. He smiled as he asked do you want one or two sugars? Chris looked at Nate and said, no man, just black for me. He handed Chris his coffee and poured himself a cup. The coffee helped him relax and prepare him for the day.

As the three gentlemen drank their coffee, John took a deep breath and said, boy it is going to be a hectic day for me I think I over booked myself. An assistant would have been a good idea today. Chris looked at him and said I would help you man, but I am busy too. I have two perms and a couple of colors back to back.

Nate looked at them and thought to himself that one day he could be that busy and booked up. He was fresh out of school and building a client base was an effort, but it was the only way he could get to the level of making commission, since the hourly rate for pay was only minimum wage.

John headed toward his station and as he passed Nate he hesitated and asked, Nate do you mi. . . .Nate interrupted and responded with hey if you need help I don’t mind, as long as I am not busy you know. John smiled and said hey man that would be very cool.

Nate knew he had to put his own personal problems aside for now and start considering his day and hopefully pick up a few clients. He finished his coffee and headed toward his station. As he sanitized his styling chair, the receptionist called him to the front desk. She advised him that a walk-in client needed a service and he was first on the list. She looked at Nate and said, her name is Carol and no worries, it’s only a cut and style you can handle that, can’t you?

He felt this nervousness in his stomach. What about John he thought. As he looked toward his station John nodded a sigh of approval which was a relief or him.

Nate greeted his client and led her to his station for a consultation. As he looked at her in the station mirror, he kept a smile as he observed that Carol had long hair down to the middle of her back. Her ends looked stingy and dry. She was requesting a trim and he knew the blow dry alone would take a considerable amount of time to do. He led Carol to the shampoo bowl and recommended a deep conditioning to possibly restore those dry ends. As he was shampooing, he noticed John’s next client come in.

Nate’s attention drew back to his client and as she relaxed in the shampoo bowl, he again suggested the deep conditioning and mentioned he would give her a discount on her long hair because he felt it was necessary since she only wanted a trim. Carol groaned and smiled asking how long it would take.

Nate told Carol she would only be under the dryer for about 20 minutes and then a few minutes for cool down, so the cuticle closed and sealed the conditioner in for better protection. She agreed and he followed through with the conditioning service. He offered a cup of coffee and suggested a variety of cookies she could choose from while under the dryer. Carol smiled and said, my goodness I could get used to this. But do you have tea instead? He came back with her tea and settled her under the dryer.

Nate then went to John’s station and asked if he needed him to shampoo his next client. John looked at him in amazement and said, sure, but I still need to blow dry this client so take your time with it as long as it does not interfere with your client under the dryer. No problem man, Nate answered as he walked toward the reception area.

He introduced himself to the John’s client and advised her he would be shampooing her for him and would also prepare hair for the perm. He then asked if she would like a beverage while he set up his station. She blinked as she looked at him. Well yes some coffee would be nice. Would you like cream and sugar? No just a small dose of cream would be fine she answered. He went to the dispensary and as he poured the coffee, he looked at his watch and felt he had enough time to do the shampoo and pre-perm preparation. He knew if he put John’s client under the dryer with a light conditioner, he could then take his own client back to his station and John would have enough time to do his blow dry style.

He realized all he learned about teamwork was paying off. It surprised him to see how simple, yet multitasking was easier than he imagined. He remembered the phrase his teachers repeated in school. If you know where you are, you will always know where you are going. Now finally it made sense. Nate knew what he had to do next.

It seemed a little strange to him to look around and watch John and Chris busy with their clients and he was in the middle of it, taking part and making it work. He recalled the motivational conference he attended conference and a famous football player was the speaker. He said, If you have a team, everyone will be going in the same direction with the same goal in mind. He did not get it at the time because he thought it meant football. At that moment he realized it could be for all areas of life, it made him feel like part of the group and good inside.

Now back with his own client Nate rinsed the conditioner from her hair. He led her to his station and asked her how she was doing. Carol said she was taking the day off from her husband’s business, he runs a salvage yard. Nate almost gasped because it was all he could do not to ask about some tires for his car. He knew he could purchase some decent tires from their salvage yard and he really needed them. But instead he smiled and said, that sounds very interesting.

As he was prepping Carol for the haircut, he noticed John pass by escorting his own client to the reception desk. As they made eye contact John gave him a thumb’s up and said thanks for helping me out dude. He smiled and said no problem, anytime.

He sectioned Carol’s hair for the haircut and informed her about how much better her hair felt after the conditioning treatment. She smiled as she looked at him through the mirror and said, I guess I really needed that treatment. He smiled in agreement. Carol’s hair was long past her shoulders and one length. He knew she only wanted a trim so he had her stand so he could get a better view of how much to safely take off. Once he finished the haircut, he handed her a mirror and asked if she would like more taken off. No, that looks perfect, you did a good job. He then had her sit down for the blow dry and finished style.

As he put the last finishing touches on the style the receptionist came up to him and advised him there was a walk-in client and she wanted a hair color service. He smiled and replied he would finish this client and be right with her.

He asked the receptionist if she would offer the client a beverage. She looked at him as she turned to walk away and said sure I think I can do that for you.

He gave Carol a mirror again to see the finished product and she smiled as she said, boy everyone in here is so nice. I really like this salon. So, Nate, how long have you been doing hair? You really seem to know your stuff. He paused for a moment as he put the mirror on his station.

Nate replied with, so what type of salvage yard does your family have? Carol answered oh you know just junk cars and such. It can get dirty out there. We can tell by the damage that some cars had a serious accident, so we mostly sell parts. What I hate the most are the tires; they can really be a mess to deal with. But all in all, it is a good business for us.

Carol looked at him and asked, can I say something to you Nate? He looked at her in surprise and said sure. Will we live about a mile and half from here and someone parked their car in front of our house with a flat tire. The rest of the tires did not look good either and at first I was going to call the police and have it towed, but then I thought, good grief we have so many tires and this person does not even have one good one.

At first I wanted to know who the car belonged to but I guess I will wait for them to pick it up and see what they would say about some good used tires as a gift. You know. What do you think?

Nate felt his knees almost buckle underneath him as he replied, you know it is hard for me to say this, but I have been doing hair for less than one year. I started this job last week and I really like this place. I feel like things are going to
