    ABUSE

A buse, in whatever form it takes, it is completely against God’s just and loving nature. His word speaks out repeatedly against the wickedness of oppression, mistreatment, harming others with violent actions and w ords.

The Lord is a present help for those who are abused. When we feel alone, God is there, and we can call on him at any time. The scripture tells us that the Lord is a refuge for the poor, the needy, and those in distress. He is a shelter from the storm and a shade from the heat. Lord, you are my portion in the land of the living. When I am in desperate need, you rescue me from those who want to abuse, use, and destroy me.

    Scriptures . . .

The Lord will be a refuge for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble. And they that know thy name will put their trust in thee: for thou, Lord, hast not forsaken them that seek thee.

    —Psalm 9:9-10

Chronological Life Application Study Bible, Tyndale House Publishers, copyright 2012

For he hath not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted; neither hath he hid his face from him; but when he cried unto him, he heard.

    —Psalm 22:24

Chronological Life Application Study Bible, Tyndale House Publishers, copyright 2012

A father of the fatherless, and a judge of the widows, is God in his holy habitation. God setteth the solitary in families: he bringeth out those who are bound with chains: but the rebellious dwell in a dry land.

    —Psalm 68:5-6

Chronological Life Application Study Bible, Tyndale House Publishers, copyright 2012

For thou has been a strength to the poor, a strength to the needy in his distress, a refuge from the storm, a shadow from the heat, when the blast of the terrible ones is a storm against the wall.

    —Isaiah 25:4

Chronological Life Application Study Bible, Tyndale House Publishers, copyright 2012

Don’t be afraid of those who threaten you. For the time is coming when everything that is covered will be revealed, and all that is secret will be known.

    —Matthew 10:26

Then they began to spit in Jesus’s face and beat him with their fists. And some slapped him, jeering, Prophesy to us, you Messiah! Who hit you that time?

    ADDICTION

T here are those who struggle with overcoming addictions; for example, when a person has a compulsive need for and use of a habit-forming substance (such as heroin, cocaine, alcohol, nicotine, etc.) on a regular basis and they cannot break the habit on their own.

My personal knowledge of addiction is real. My son has abused cocaine for many years. I had taken him to several rehabilitation centers, but he would always fall back into that life of drugs. If there’s one thing I have learned in this whole fiasco is that a person will not stop using drugs until they are ready. They will not stop when the parent is tired, worn out, and darn near bankrupt. You must know that when the addict has made up their mind to stop completely, they will. Although I have been in the midst of this storm for over twenty-five years, I have never lost faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. For I know he is worthy of all praise.

The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is upon me, for the Lord has anointed me, to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to comfort the brokenhearted and to proclaim the captives will be released and the prisoners will be released.

    —Isaiah 61:1

Every Man’s Bible New Living Translation, authors, Stephen Arterburn, Dean Merrill, Tyndale House Publishers copyright 2004

But there is another power within me that is at war with my mind. This power makes me a slave to the sin that is still within me.

Oh, what a miserable person I am! Who will free me from this life that is dominated by sin and death?

Thank God! the answer is in Jesus Christ our Lord. So you see how it is: in my mind I really want to obey God’s law, but because of my sinful nature I am a slave to sin.

    —Romans 7:23-25

Every Man’s Bible New Living Translation, authors, Stephen Arterburn, Dean Merrill, Tyndale House Publishers copyright 2004

The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure.

    —1 Corinthians 10:13

Every Man’s Bible New Living Translation, authors, Stephen Arterburn, Dean Merrill, Tyndale House Publishers copyright 2004

So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves.

    ALCOHOL ADDICTION

D runkenness breaks down morals. We must know that our body is the temple of the Holy Spirit. Jesus warns us about the abuse of alcohol. We must remember that heavy drinking brings misery. Be wise! Don’t join those who abuse alcohol or d rugs.

For those who struggle with overcoming alcohol addiction, take heart in these truths: Our God is stronger than anything that holds power over us. No matter how far we fall, God can always reach down to us and lift us up. His grace and forgiveness are greater than any amount of temptation or relapses we might experience. The Almighty is near and ready to help. These Bible promises show that Jesus has already won the victory over anything that entangles us. Moving forward in his freedom, we can learn to love and worship him with all our hearts and our strength.

He who loves pleasure will become poor; whoever loves wine and oil will never be rich.

    —Proverbs 21:17

Quick Scripture Reference for Counseling, John Kruis, author; published by Baker Books, April 2006

Don’t gaze at the wine, seeing how red it is, how it sparkles in the cup, how smoothly it goes down. For in the end it bites like a poisonous snake; it stings like a viper. You will stagger like a sailor tossed at sea, clinging to a swaying mast. And you will say, They hit me, but I didn’t feel it. I didn’t even know it when they beat me up. When will I wake up so I can look for another drink?

    —Proverbs 23:31-35

Every Man’s Bible New Living Translation, authors, Stephen Arterburn, Dean Merrill, Tyndale House Publishers copyright 2004

The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is upon me, for the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to comfort the brokenhearted and to proclaim that captives will be released and prisoners will be freed.
