    About The Editor

    PREFACE

W ith the overwhelming response for the first edition of Self Management book, I am tempted to bring out the second edition of ‘Self-Management’ book with a sub title For Individual and Organizational success. The first edition consisted of contribution from the faculties and guest faculties of IIMT. It was the outcome of the series of lecture notes on self-management. It is my duty to inform you that the second edition of the book consists of contributions from the guest faculties of IIMT as well as the authors around the globe from different universities.

Interscience Institute of Management& Technology (IIMT) is a premier B-School imparting quality management education. Since its inception, the institute is continuously providing knowledge and skills to serve the changing needs of the business and commerce. The institute has been organising many conferences, seminars, and symposium covering different aspects of management and technology on a regular basis. Also, we have a presence at Elsevier-Digital Commons Press where all our journals, proceedings and student projects are archived. We have more than hundred mentors, spread across the globe. The students are motivated to give their views on all the activities of the institute.

We not only educate to create managers, but also to make every possible effort to nourish self-management. To overcome the obstacles encountered while nurturing self-management skills, our team organises lecture notes and seminar on self-management. As an academician, I am associated with teaching and research in the domain of management and technology for the last thirty years. I have authored a few textbooks and edited more than fifty books, book chapters, and special issues from leading publishing houses like Springer Nature, Elsevier, Kluwer Academic, IEEE, ACM, and others. I being a professor by profession am in close touch with the students and scrutinize them. Many students don’t assimilate the lessons taught due to lack of confidence and control to handle the workload. So, I felt the need of disseminating about ‘self- management’ to the people at large. Self management is the ability to prioritize goals, decide what must be done, and be accountable to complete the necessary actions. Lastly but not the least, self-management is not only an individual needs, but it also caters to the organizational success.

I am sure the readers shall find interest and benefited out of this book.

    EDITORIAL

S elf-management skills allow one to maximize their productivity and improve workplace performance efficiently to achieve professional goals. Improving one’s self-management skills can help them to increase their employability and enhance management of career path. Again, self-management skills are the abilities that allow people to control their thoughts, feelings and actions. However having strong self-management skills, enables to set goals independently and take the initiative to achieve them. A purposeful self-management strategy can help one to direct right approach towards their career and ensure to seek opportunities that drives to their goals. Enhancing the self-management skills by actively focusing on its ways will let one evaluate and improve on daily tasks. While carefully managing the activities in workplace helps one to achieve and excel in their professional goals. Moreover, employees with strong self-management skills are a valuable asset in any workplace.

Self-management is not a social autonomy; rather it involves autonomy grounded in competence, in contribution to others, and in professionalism where professionalism involves relatedness to others. However, it is the behavior that cannot be captured in formal rules but contributes to organizational purposes. Building self-management skills take time and are a long-term process. It requires time for people to find what works for them to grow both personally as well as professionally. However, the present scenario demands self awareness in one’s life and adapting to the situation with effective stress management skill makes life much easier.

The first volume of this book has received an enormous response from the public which gave rise to the need of the second volume. Again a huge number of chapters round the globe have been received out of which selective ten chapters are selected to be published in this volume.

Nature has been the best mentor in its own inimitable way. This is well-illustrated in the first chapter on Learn management from nature which exhibits on how one can inculcate the self management skills existing in nature such as self-efficacy, self-reflection, building resilience, optimize and adapt to survive and resolve their issues.

Whether it is in workplace or personal life teamwork is an integral part in achieving professional/personal success. The second chapter on Teamwork Skills focused on the importance of team and the synergistic effect which was well displayed in the rugby World Cup team with the slogan One Team.

In a team, the assessment of an individual’s intention to participate in a behavior change process is essential. The next chapter entitled The Science of Collaborative Groups: Acceptance and Commitment Training for Leadership introduced the concept of psychological flexibility and its relevance to group collaboration in the chapter.

Along with the teamwork skills and collaboration, another crucial skill is to unlock the potential of oneself in a better way for achievement of goals. The fourth chapter on Perception has concentrated on the key role of unlocking self-potentiality through a detailed discussion on perceiver highlighting his role in the perception process.

Again to improve self-management skills, one needs to gain awareness and understanding by looking at oneself naturally. This is well justified in the fifth chapter on Self Awareness. This chapter has described briefly the main component of emotional intelligence-self awareness along with its importance and practical methods to achieve it.

Yet another self management skill that needs to be developed in order to strengthen the effectiveness in the teams is leadership skills. Beyond Efficiency and Towards Effectiveness, the sixth chapter of this book introduce a few key models and/or theories of leadership that have effective leadership skills as a central focus.

Human beings undergo a plethora of emotions. The next chapter in this volume is about Emotional Independence that discusses the importance of emotional balance, control of emotions and different arenas of Emotional Intelligence Framework which one normally passes through in every stage of life.

With overwhelming emotions revolving around, one is bound to be under stress and it is highly essential to manage stress to lead a peaceful life. The author of the eighth chapter entitled her chapter as The Three H’s of Stress Management seeks to enumerate and elaborate the strategies which can help us to cope up with stress to a greater extent.

Eternal happiness is beyond all worries, attractions and temptations in this transient world. The next chapter entitled From Kurukshetra to Karyakshetra: Lessons of Self-Management highlights on few confrontations at the workplace that man faces today and attempts to provide solutions through Gita, integrating knowledge skills and attitude in education towards leading a holistic life

Last but not the least, the final chapter on Presentation Skills throws light on its importance in an individual’s life, as the success depends on how the work is presented. This chapter provides useful insights while preparing for a presentation.

With the meritoriously selected set of chapters I hope the quest for knowledge is satisfied.

    LEARN MANAGEMENT FROM NATURE

    PRAGYAN NANDA AND

    SRIKANTA PATNAIK

    Introduction

I n the current rapidly changing digitization and digital transformation scenario, organizations from all sectors face lots of novel, interrelated and complex challenges. To name a few include digital economic explosion, globalization, technological revolution, economic depletion, workforce shifting demographics, cut throat competitions and many more. Moreover, the traditional approach of take make waste is not feasible for organizations anymore in today’s volatile market scenario. Again, all types of products are being improvised to minimize storage, usage effort and time while maximizing revenue. With this amalgam of increasing stress, disruptive innovations and rising volatility in markets, leaders and managers are being engulfed with fear and anxiety of attaining their responsibility. Today, all these external as well as internal forces altogether are not only increasing complexity of the problems but also are building pressure on managers and leaders in businesses while compelling them to think deeply with open mind to reflect novel solutions.

Although, managers and business leaders have shifted their focus to sustainability by reconstructing and re-establishing several programs still it is quite apparent that they can realize that the issues are more complicated and bigger than the prior assessments. Thus, they have now radically started looking forward to re-invent new system based solutions in a holistic way. In such a situation innovation can be considered as another key and the only other way out for the business organizations to survive, sustain and stand firm for long in the fiercely competitive market scenario. Also, there are some small, simple yet powerful tools available that can aid managers and leaders in cultivating conducive conditions and these tools are found in Nature. Even Darwin’s theory from Nature advocates the principle stating survival of the fittest which forms the base for many organizational strategies and its variations (Reddy, 2014). According to this strategy, only those organizations and firms are most likely to survive which can stand the dynamically changing environment and can adapt to the change in the environment by changing themselves. However, contradictorily, the traditional approaches of management usually conflict with the law of Nature in many ways and are often prone to failure due to many reasons such as uncertainty, prevailing risks, limited resources and incompetent processes lacking clarity in methodology. But Nature showcases promising approaches for the adoption of sustainable innovation and self-management aspects by the organizations and their leaders. One of such fields that preach product design and managerial concepts inspired by Nature is known as Biomimicry (Badawy, 2007; Petrig, 2013). It lays emphasis on the interconnected network and dependency among the components in an ecosystem and their survival strategy by metamorphosing the organization into an ecosystem and aligns various phases such as design and development of products, production and finally commercialization with different operations existing in Nature. Again the ecosystem existing in Nature can be perfectly mapped to that of an organizational ecosystem as both ecosystems struggle to some extent for survival. As they say popularly that it’s a jungle out there and everyone is fighting the battle for survival by following the law of the jungle and one must win it by being the best to beat the competition.

The law of the jungle: kill or be killed, every one for himself, survival of the strongest.

(The Jungle Book, by Rudyard Kipling)

Nevertheless, despite this law, all living beings and creatures dwelling in Nature remain in harmony and concord i.e., they live at peace with every aspect of Nature. Similarly, inspirations and learnings can be drawn from Nature to reflect various managerial contexts such as leadership, team work, resilience, innovation, strategy formulation and organizational structure to deal with the dynamics of business. This chapter concentrates on how managers and leaders can learn and adopt self-management skills from Nature to deal with real-life as well as organizational problems.

Tap into the Nature: Genius in Problem Solving

In today’s fast transforming business scenario, business leaders and managers are continuously encountering dynamic changes that disrupts traditional organizational paradigm. Ironically, to overcome the present-day challenges, managers, business leaders and solution providers are turning their heads towards the Nature surrounding us for inspiration. Nature, as we know, itself projects dynamic characteristics, changing frequently to adapt to changes for survival, evolving again and again, self-challenging as well self-organizing. If one will observe Nature deeply as quoted by Albert Einstein, one will feel so tiny in front of Nature’s incredible, robust and resilient design features, interdependencies between several species, collective intelligence, self-organizing feedback loops for active and proactive actions and reactions, their self-managing emergent behavioral patterns and last but not
