The Million Jobs Plan

At the beginning of the coronavirus outbreak in Australia, a powerful and committed group of people came together to create solutions for one of the biggest economic shocks in the country’s history. What they identified was 1.8 million jobs in clean energy and low emissions solutions across a range of industries and sectors, which would deliver the essential economic stimulus, while also creating health and environmental benefits. Spearheaded by the independent think tank, Beyond Zero Emissions, the Million Jobs Plan is the first stage in a broader project to modernise our industry and re-skill our workforce. Project lead Heidi Lee tells us about how this extraordinary piece of work evolved out of a moment of such disruption.

Beyond Zero Emissions has a long history of creating economic solutions that highlight how Australia can thrive through the transition to a zero emissions economy. Over the past 10 years we’ve published reports for every sector of the economy, from energy and buildings to land, transport and manufacturing. More recently, we’ve used this knowledge base to design decarbonisation pathways for places and communities where the transition to a zero carbon economy is going to hit people the hardest.
