    Preface:

    A Divine Experience of Grace

    by Rev. Billy Bowen

In this introduction to my call into the ministry, I will offer the reader an opening comment, my experience, His healing hand, and finally a closing comment. My opening comment will be informative and set the stage for my story.

My experience of divine grace happened in September 1977, during the ten High Holy Days. I did not know anything about the High Holy Days. I did not know of the Jewish traditions or about the Star of David. GOD gave it to me in bits and pieces as I made my walk with him after my experience.

I had just arrived in Keokee and went by the home of my wife to be. Arbutus and I met in the churchyard in Keokee in 1976. We were planning on being married in the Keokee Primitive Baptist Church. When I arrived at the house, a next-door neighbor was visiting. The neighbor was Polly Deaton.

Polly and I sat in the living room while Arbutus got ready for Church Services. I had the TV remote and began clicking from channel to channel. I stopped on a channel that had Oral Roberts ministering. He began to tell the story of The Master’s Violin and The Touch of the Master’s Hand. He told the story this way.

An auction taking place, and a large crowd gathered. The auctioneer picked up an old violin lying nearby covered with cobwebs and dust. The violin was worn out. When the auction started, the bids were very low. No one showed an interest in the violin.

Then an old man stepped forward and ask to examine it a little closer. He picked it up. He wiped off the dust and placed it on his shoulder and started to play. The sound was beautiful and rich, and everyone was amazed. They realized the violin was in the hands of a master violinist. The price began to climb higher and higher. A touch of the master’s hand had increased the value of the instrument.

Then Oral Roberts said, Someone is watching this program today, and that person is in need of a touch of the Master’s hand. I want you to come to the TV and, as an act of faith, put your hand upon my hand.

He placed his hand on the camera, and there it was on the TV screen. Then for some compelling reason, I was drawn by a supernatural power to get out of my seat and place my hand upon the image of his hand as he prayed for individuals to receive a touch of the Master’s hand. When the prayer was over, Arbutus had entered the room, and she and Polly prayed. Although not know to me, the stage was set for my divine experience of grace.

Polly left to go to her church, and Arbutus and I left to attend the Primitive Baptist Church in Keokee. We attended different churches in the Three Fork of Powell River Association each weekend. This was a custom among the Primitive Baptist people.

We arrived at the church, and I had forgotten all about the prayer. Roy Flanner was moderator, and Elder Carlos Williams was present to preach the sermon. We had gone through the service of song, prayer, and preaching and were coming to the close of the service.

The congregation was singing the closing song as each person moved about to shake hands and give the love offering of hugs. I was shaking hands with Elder Carlos Williams when I suddenly fell to the floor. I was groaning in the spirit. I don’t remember anything, but I was in total peace and serenity. I was surrounded by total darkness in a soundproof area. I could not hear or see anything or anyone.

Then a hand touched me and lifted me on to my feet with a force of the pull of gravity. I was carried away in the spirit and faded into yet another unknown place. I knew that no human eye had ever seen this place.

I was in the unexplored presence of a living GOD. The great holiness of GOD came down upon me, and I was given another language. GOD began to talk to me. I had no idea how long I was in the presence of GOD. It was faster than time itself as it is known to men. When I came back into the reality of the present time, I knew nothing. I had no memory recall of what had happened.

I knew something out of the ordinary had happened. No one was around me. I looked, and everyone was backed into corners up against the wall. Some were in their cars, and some had fled the scene.

As I stepped outside the building and into the sunlight, no one said a word to me. I was as weak as one could be, and there was no strength left in my body. No one understood the great awakening that had just taken place. I got into the car with Arbutus, and we went to her home.

When I got to the house, I lay down on the couch, where I had been sitting before Oral Roberts had prayed the prayer. As I lay there, two church members came in. They were Arbutus’s nieces, Devonia Dinsmore and Melva Horner. Devonia said, Don’t let anyone tell you what happened was not real.

Then Melva asked, What was it that you kept saying about the Star of David?

I said, I did not know I said anything about the Star of David.

The reply was, Yes, you mentioned it several times. I thought about the Apostle Paul and his experience on the Road to Damascus.

Then GOD whispered in a small, still voice something in my spiritual ear. He said, How be it in the spirit you speak mysteries. It was the same small, still voice that talked to me out of total darkness. He assured me within myself that there was more to come about his holy sign, the Star of David.

I went my way with the deep, dark secret of the Star of David lying dormant within my spirit. Then GOD began to drop bits and pieces of the puzzle and the divine experience of grace into the reality of my daily life.

From the wisdom within my heart, where it was hiding, it traveled into the reality of my brain. Here is what had happened to me in the allotted time of talking face-to-face with GOD on that Sunday during the High Holy Days.

GOD showed me this scripture in Proverbs: As in water face answered to face, so the heart of man answers to man (Prov. 27:19 RSV). I read the natural words, just as you have now done. God began to show me the Oral Torah meaning of the thing I read.

I understood that that when two people are swimming and are at a distance from each other, it is impossible to understand clearly what they say one to another. The roar of the water and the voices of other in the water take away from the clarity of what they say! They must swim up to each other and talk face-to-face. When they do this, they can clearly hear what is being sent from the heart by way of the mouth. This is exactly what GOD did for me.

He called me out of the troubled waters of humankind, and there in the sea of doubt and unbelief, he met me and talked to me face-to-face. Here is my story of what happened.

    My Experience of Grace

I was in the spirit on the Lord’s Day of Atonement. I beheld a bright firmament of darkness, and there was a voice from the firmament. Above the firmament, (Ezek. 1:25 KJV) was the likeness of a throne as the appearance of the Sapphire Stone. Upon the likeness of the throne was the likeness of a man upon it, (Ezek.1:26 KJV). He was clothed with a garment down to his feet and was girt about the paps with a golden girdle. His head and his hair were white like wool, as white as the snow. His eyes were as flames of fire, (Rev.1:13-14 KJV). His feet were like unto fine brass as if they burned in a furnace. His voice was the sound of many waters, and he had in his right hand seven stars. Out of his mouth came a sharp two edge sword, and his countenance was as the sun shined in his strength, (Rev.1:15-16 KJV). When I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. He laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not, I am the first and the last. I am he that liveth and was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of hell and death, (Rev.1:17-18 RKV). Then he said unto me, Stand upon thy feet, and I will speak unto thee. It was then that the spirit entered me when he spoke unto me and set me upon my feet, (Ezek.2:1-2 KJV).

He said unto me, I send thee to the children of Israel that hath rebelled against me. They and their fathers have transgressed against me, even unto this very day, (Ezek.2:3 KJV). Thou, son of man, hear what I say unto thee: be not thou rebellious like that rebellious house. Open thy mouth and eat that I give thee, (Ezek.2:8 KJV).

I looked and a hand was sent upon me. Lo a roll of a book was there and he spread it before me. It was written within and without and there was written these words, "Give ear, O my people to my law; incline your ears, to the words of my mouth, (Psa. 78:1 KJV). I will open my mouth in a parable and I will utter dark sayings of old, (Psa.78:2 KJV) which in other ages were not made know unto the sons of men as it is now revealed unto my
