    WHO IS GOD?

Over two thousand years ago, the people of Athens, who had many ‘gods’ built an altar TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. The Apostle Paul, who’d had a life-changing encounter with this unknown God, told the people about Him:

Men of Athens, I perceive that in all things you are very religious; For as I was passing through and considering the objects of your worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Therefore, the One Whom you worship without knowing, Him I proclaim to you: God, who made the world and everything in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands. Nor is He worshiped with men’s hands, as though He needed anything, since He gives to all life, breath, and all things. And He has made from one blood every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, and has determined their appointed times and the boundaries of their dwellings. So that they should seek the Lord, in the hope that they might grope for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us. (Acts 17:22-27)

God is not far from each one of us. If we seek Him we will find Him. His desire is for every person to know Him.

GOD HAS MADE HIMSELF KNOWN TO THE WORLD!

We can see the characteristics of God when we look at the wonders of creation.

Romans 1:20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead…

From the vast oceans to the delicate flowers and all the variety of creatures, God’s power and beauty is displayed for all to see. (Psalm 19:1)

However, not only has God revealed His attributes through the things He made, but He went even further: He became a human being and dwelt among us! The word of God says … God was manifested in the flesh… (1Timothy 3:16) He literally walked on the earth amongst the people He created.

Colossians 1:15 He (Jesus) is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.

JESUS WAS GOD IN THE FLESH!

If you want to know what God is like, look at Jesus!

    Jesus Himself declared:

No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him. (John 1:18)

He who has seen Me has seen the Father. (John 14:9)

If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; and from now on you know Him and have seen Him. (John 14:7) Hebrews 1:1-3 God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, HAS IN THESE LAST DAYS SPOKEN TO US BY HIS SON, Whom He has appointed heir of all things, through Whom also He made the worlds; WHO BEING THE BRIGHTNESS OF HIS GLORY AND THE EXPRESS IMAGE OF HIS PERSON…

1 John 5:20 And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us an understanding, that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. THIS IS THE TRUE GOD AND ETERNAL LIFE.

    %232.jpg

REFLECTION: Who is the true God? Do you have the true God and eternal life?

    TWO

    34964.png

    WHAT IS GOD LIKE?

1 John 4:16 And we have known and believed the love that God has for us; GOD IS LOVE….

    GOD IS LOVE…

What did God look like through Jesus? He was love in action. GOD IS LOVE. He had compassion on people and healed their sick. He spoke truth into their lives. He also taught that there was more beyond this life; He wants us to be with Him for ETERNITY. He came to the earth, through Jesus, to reconcile people to Himself. Everything God has ever done is motivated by love. God is love.

God desires that every person be brought back into a living relationship with Him. He longs for us to know Him, to experience His love, and walk closely with Him.

God was in Christ, reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them… (2 Corinthians 5:19)

John 3:17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. - Jesus

The word ‘saved’ comes from the original Greek word ‘Sozo’: to deliver or protect, heal, preserve, save, to do well, be made whole(Strong’s Concordance #4982). It means to save from physical death by healing and from spiritual death by forgiving sin and its effects. It also means to give new life and to cause to have a new heart/spirit. It is wholeness in every area.

Through Jesus, God made people whole. Jesus said, the Father Who dwells in Me does the works. (John 14:10) We know God’s will because of God’s works through Jesus. GOD IS A HEALER.

Acts 10:38 …God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him. Notice that the bible calls sickness an oppression of the devil.

We have to understand that there is an enemy out there called Satan, who works destruction against humanity through lies and deception. He is described in the bible as ...He who deceives the whole world (Revelation 12:9).

Jesus said in John 10:10 The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.

1 John 3:8 …For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.

REFLECTION: What are the works of the devil that you can see in the world around you? Is there anything stealing, killing, or destroying in your own life?

    THREE

    34964.png

JESUS CAME TO GIVE US ABUNDANT LIFE

    The name Jesus means ‘Saviour.’

Christ means ‘The anointed One.’ Jesus is the Christ, the Anointed Saviour! The anointing is the power of God that removes burdens and destroys yokes. A yoke is anything that restricts freedom or burdens people. Anything oppressive such as sickness, poverty, depression, fear, or an addiction, is a burden or a yoke.

Isaiah 10:27 It shall come to pass in that day that his burden will be taken away from your shoulder, and his yoke will be destroyed because of the anointing oil.

Whose burden and whose yoke? The devil (Satan) is the one who burdens people and puts heavy yokes on them. He oppresses people. But there is good news:

Hebrews 13:8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. What Jesus did when He was on the earth, He still does today! He has the power to set at liberty all those who are oppressed:

Luke 4:18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor (beggarly, destitute), He has sent Me to heal the broken-hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed (downtrodden); to proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD. -Jesus

This is the gospel (good news) in a nut-shell! It touches and transforms every area of a person’s life. The acceptable year of the Lord is now! It is when the free favours of God abound! NOW IS THE DAY OF SALVATION!

2 Corinthians 3:17 …where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. Liberty means "freedom from slavery, independence, absence of external restraint, a negation of control or dominion." (Strong’s Concordance #1657). When you come to Jesus, you come out of the devil’s control!

JESUS CAME TO DESTROY THE WORKS OF THE DEVIL AND RESTORE US BACK TO GOD

1 John 3:8 …. for this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.

God was in Christ, reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them… (2 Corinthians 5:19) God was not counting sin against people, because Jesus was going to pay the price for the sins of the whole world. The message of the gospel is: God loves you and wants you to be reconciled with Him!

The miracles, signs and wonders that followed Jesus were evidence that the Father had sent Him and was doing the works through Him! Jesus said, the Father Who dwells in Me does the works. (John 14:10)

Jesus destroyed the devil’s works of sickness and every form of oppression in people’s lives wherever He went. He also went to THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM: THE CURSE OF SIN. Through His death on the cross He was going to completely destroy the power of sin over humanity. He preached to the people to repent, telling them that a whole new kingdom was here. ‘Repent’ means to turn from your own ways of thinking and living and to embrace God’s ways. It means that you realize that you are not your own God! It means coming back to the One who created you and loves you and following His ways rather than your own.

Proverbs 14:12 There is a way that seems right to a man but its end is the way of death. God’s ways will always bring life and wholeness to us, and most importantly, lead us to eternal life.

    %233.jpg

REFLECTION: Have you been following your own way in life?

    FOUR

    34964.png

THE DESTRUCTIVE WORK OF SIN UPON HUMANITY

Mankind’s true identity and relationship with God was stolen because of the problem of sin that was passed down from the first man, Adam.

Romans 3:23 For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

Romans 3:10 There is no one righteous, not even one.

Isaiah 59:2 But your iniquities have separated you from your God…

No matter what nation, religion, or culture you are from, the same spiritual law applies to the whole of humanity: WE HAVE ALL SINNED AND FALLEN SHORT OF THE GLORY OF GOD!

The works of the devil began in the Garden of Eden when Satan came to deceive God’s creation, Adam and Eve. This is not a story from Sunday school – this is the reality of the start of the human race! (For more study on this topic see www.creation.com)

Adam and Eve were made in the image of God, in His very likeness! They were above all other created things and were His most precious creation. They were created for fellowship with Him; Adam and Eve walked and talked with God! Genesis 1:27-28 So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. Then God blessed them, and God said to them, Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth. God gave His people an incredible position of blessing and power! It was His plan for them to rule over the entire earth!

Adam and Eve were given everything good they could possibly desire. God had only given them one command to obey; they could eat freely from all the trees in the garden except from one: the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. God told them that if they ate of this tree they would surely die. (Genesis 2:17) Why had God put this command in place? Firstly, because there was already an evil fallen angel called Satan on the earth. He had been thrown out of heaven for rebelling against God. Sin had been found in him. This tree of the knowledge of good and evil represented the knowledge of his kingdom. God did not want His people even having the knowledge of evil. Evil brings forth death – spiritually and physically. Yet God made man with a free will. He did not create His people to be robots. And so, there was a command given not to touch that particular tree, for their own good!

Satan, who is God’s enemy, moved in on the scene to destroy the relationship between God and man. Satan’s plan was to get Adam and Eve to doubt God’s word, doubt His goodness, and distrust Him. He began by questioning Eve with Has God indeed said….? (Genesis 3:1-6) After entertaining the lies of Satan, Adam and Eve ended up doing the one thing that God had told them not to do. THEY CHOSE TO BELIEVE THE LIE OF THE DEVIL INSTEAD OF GOD’S WORD TO THEM. The lie that Satan told Eve was that she would not die if she ate of the fruit of the forbidden tree. She believed the lie and in turn gave the fruit to her husband. This deception and disobedience caused them to come under the influence and dominion of Satan, whom they had obeyed. His nature was actually reproduced in them. Once they partook of the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, the light that was in them, their spiritual life, was turned to darkness and they hid from God. Their eyes had been opened to the knowledge of evil. Their nature which had once been full of light and love, became infected with sin. Instead of faith, they now had fear, and all the negative forces that come with it. They were now going to experience the results of sin. THEY HAD JUST DIED SPIRITUALLY, and with it would ultimately come physical death too.

The same tactic is continued to this day: Satan tries to keep people separated from God and His plans for them through lies and deception. He wants people to believe that God does not love them or want the best for them, does not mean what He says, or does not even exist!

If we look around, it’s not hard to see the effects of sin in the world. It has brought every form of destruction, death and curse to humanity.

The nature of sin is in our spirit from birth, because this spiritual darkness was passed on to all of us from the fall of the first man, Adam, when he disobeyed God. Sin is like a heavy weight that hangs around our necks, causing depression, anxiety, and many other mental and physical sicknesses. It poisons us from the inside out. No matter what we try to do to feel better, it leaves us feeling empty and unfulfilled.

Romans 5:12 Therefore, just as through one man (Adam) sin entered the world, and death through sin; and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned.

Not only does sin keep us separated from God in this life, but for all eternity. Hell was created for the devil and his angels who rebelled against God because of pride. (Matthew 25:41) That is where they will be locked up at the end of the age, and Satan wants to take as many people with him as possible. Through lies and deception, Satan attempts to keep people from knowing God and experiencing His plan for their lives. Jesus said in John 8:44 that Satan is ‘’a murderer from the beginning…. a liar and the father of lies.’’

The good news is that God has made a way for each of us to be reconciled to Him, to know Him, and to be made spiritually new again. He wants us to experience the joy of forgiveness and having our sins washed away. He wants to bring the kingdom of heaven to us now, into our lives- from the inside out! He also wants to restore our identity and dominion, just as Adam and Eve had before they sinned. He wants us to have complete freedom, peace, and joy!

How could this be possible? Jesus made a way for this to happen!

REFLECTION: Do you want to be forgiven, and free from the burden of sin? Do you want a fresh start in your life?

    FIVE

    34964.png

JESUS CAME TO THE WORLD TO TAKE AWAY OUR SINS

John 3:16 For God so LOVED the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. – Jesus

Jesus has existed with God the Father for all eternity. Yet He was willing to leave His place of glory in heaven and come to the earth on a divine mission, for us… all because of love.

Colossians 1: 17 (Amplified Bible) And He Himself existed before all things, and in Him all things consist (cohere, are held together).

John 1:10 -11 He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him. He came to His own and His own did not receive Him.

Philippians 2:6-8 Who being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.

Jesus came to the earth, born of a virgin, miraculously conceived by the Holy Spirit. (See the book of Luke 1:30-35) He was truly the Son of God, with the divine nature of God. Yet, He was also called the Son of man, because He was born of woman and was made exactly like us. The word of God tells us that He had to be made like His brethren in all things, and that He was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. (Hebrews 2:17, 4:15)

John 1:29… John saw Jesus coming toward him and said Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.

Jesus lived a completely sinless life. He came to take away our sins! How? On the cross. It was the greatest spiritual event in the entire history of mankind; the event that forever changed the world! Even our time frame is ordered by His existence on the earth! B.C. (Before Christ) and A.D. (Anno domini, which is a Latin phrase meaning "in the year of the Lord" – the year that Jesus was born.)

At the age of about thirty, Jesus was baptized by John. The Holy Spirit descended upon Him like a dove and a voice came from heaven saying,

You are My beloved Son, in Whom I am well pleased. (Mark 1:11)

JESUS TOOK THE CURSE OF SIN FOR THE WHOLE WORLD IN HIS DEATH ON THE CROSS

The good news is that Jesus paid the price for sin - which is death, on our behalf, so that we could go free. He absorbed the sins of the whole world into His own body. 1 Peter 2:24 who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness – by Whose stripes (wounds) you were healed.

We have all sinned and we all need forgiveness of our sins, so that we can be reconciled to God. The only way we can be forgiven is if someone else takes the punishment for our sins, on our behalf. Divine justice must be met. Spiritual law declares that the wages of sin is death, and that there is no forgiveness without the shedding of blood.

Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Hebrews 9:22 …for without the shedding of blood, there is no forgiveness.

That’s why God sent Jesus to the earth: The price had to be paid for our sins through Jesus’ death on the cross.

Jesus not only paid the price for our sins, but He actually destroyed the power of sin and all its effects, on our behalf, so that we could walk in newness of life. He wanted us to have freedom!

JESUS BORE OUR SICKNESSES AND PAINS

Isaiah 53:4-5 Surely He has borne our grief’s (sicknesses) and carried our sorrows (pains); yet we esteemed Him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted.

But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned, every one, to his own way; and the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.

Galatians 3:13 Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us…

What was the curse of the law? In short, it was all forms of destruction and ultimately, death, for disobedience to God’s laws. You can read more about the blessings and curses in the book of Deuteronomy, chapter 28.

When Jesus died, He took every person’s sins, sicknesses, and every sort of demonic oppression and curse that could ever afflict a person. Isaiah 52:14 Just as many were astonished at you, So His visage (appearance) was marred more than any man, and His form more than the sons of men.

He bore the curse of sin on behalf of humanity. Jesus became what we were, on that cross, so that by accepting His sacrifice for us, we could be made free. The work has already been done! All we need to do is to believe it and receive it by faith.

1 Peter 2 :24 who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness – BY WHOSE STRIPES YOU WERE HEALED.

(Read the whole chapter of Isaiah 53 to get the revelation of what Jesus did for you on the cross.)

Are you suffering from a sickness or disease? Jesus bore it on the cross for you to set you free. He did this at the same time He bore your sins.

JESUS TASTED DEATH FOR EVERY PERSON
