The Bible is not about Satan. The Bible is God’s message to his earthly family about his Son, Jesus Christ. However, since humanity’s fall in the Garden of Eden, Satan has been trying to steal God’s precious human creatures for his own evil purposes…precious human creatures that God’s own son died to save. Among other reasons, he does this to keep us from glorifying God and spreading the good news of the gospel.

This book is a mystery of opposites and contradictions as we recognize the spiritual war taking place in our individual lives and in our world at large. Spiritual realities include God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit, as well as God’s messengers and agents, whoever or whatever they may be.

Yet they also include Satan as he prowls around seeking to destroy those who believe and obey God. He also has his messengers and agents, and if we believe that in this age there continues to be active participation in our lives by angels or other spirit beings, we can’t take the good and reject the evil. Nor should we accept the evil and resist the good. There is ample evidence of both forces at work among us. However, none of this will be frightening for children of God.

Believers understand that this earth is not our home. We were created for the new heaven and new earth that Jesus Christ has prepared for us. I believe that heaven will be a home of endless joy and love, and that once again we will have access to the Tree of Life without any interference from Satan.

Believers must know that this is our great hope to live righteously here on earth. In fact, because of our complete faith and hope in what is to come, we live with anticipation as if we were already there.

“Dear children, do not let anyone lead you astray. He who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous. He who does what is sinful is of the devil because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work.” (1 John 3:7–8)

DEDICATION

Longevity runs in my family, except for my dad, who unexpectedly passed away at the age of 51. He was a preacher; he loved music and taught singing schools all over northern Alabama. He was a jeweler and he repaired watches. He could fix a railroad pocket watch to the nth of a second, so he was in demand by the railroads. I saw him on his knees on the floor looking for tiny watch screws and springs that had flipped out of his tweezers…

And I saw him on his knees in prayer. He was my theological tutor, handsome, funny, extremely intelligent; he was my hero. It was my dad who taught me to love the Bible and how to study it. And because of him, my mother, and my grandparents, I have lived my life trying to be a good Christian, but many times I failed my dad; I failed myself, and I failed the Lord, because Satan roared…whispering his lies!

Being 80 years old has given me pause to ponder. There would be no hope for me at all if it were not for the grace of God through Jesus Christ my Lord!

I dedicate this book to my father, James Seldon Smith, 1911–1963.

When I am asked if God exists, it is a fundamentally basic question, one which we have all asked, how can God exist when you see so much suffering in the world? I like to take it back to basics. What do we see around us today? A cursory glance at the news on any given day, we see everything from deceit, theft, fraud, violence, homicide, and war. The list goes on. I am reminded of the polar opposite, if God exists, Satan exists. If evil exists, then good also exists.

Satan may roar but he whispers his lies. A roar of false promise down the path to nowhere. Yet God’s still small voice guides us along the right path as he beckons us, come, to draw near, to take a step back from our busy lives, to listen, pause, and reflect; to study his word, and digest his truth. Just as surely as Satan’s word is untruth designed to lead astray, to cover up, and bring darkness where there is light, God’s word is truth. (1 John 2:8).

As you read this book let that light shine into your life. Allow God to speak to you as Sandra opens up The Word. Sandra is a very gifted writer with a passion to convey God’s love and promises to his people. You will be challenged AND encouraged as you discover God still speaks today. PREFACE

As I begin this writing, we are in the third month of the coronavirus pandemic 2020. It has been several weeks since I have seen my family face to face. I miss my children and grandchildren…their smiles and hugs. I miss watching my great-granddaughters grow. I miss going to church.

Day by day on the news, we see the death toll rise; the increase in cases of COVID-19; and we see our President, Vice President, and their medical and economic advisors looking tired and tearfully sad as they report the latest conditions of our economy and the need for physical distancing in an effort to keep us safe and well. Some are reporting that this was an evil chemical released by evil people who desire to destroy our nation and other nations of the world. Some say there has been a cover up. Some are reporting that it was just a stupid mistake!

Nonetheless, the entire world is suffering to some extent. In addition to the catastrophic occurrence of COVID-19, last week in the USA, we experienced tornadic storms resulting in many deaths and destruction of homes and commercial properties. In addition, our economy has had an extremely adverse reaction to the resulting layoffs and closures of businesses that are kept alive by the intermingling of people.

In our beautiful United States of America, we are seeing so much anger and hostility bleeding out to betray our struggling humanity. Just this week there have been deaths, riots, and demonstrations all over our nation caused by indignant and outraged people storming against alleged police brutality. We see law and order being overturned with false accusations against innocent people. We see racial prejudice rising like a cobra out of a basket to inflict poison into less than perfect lives that have been saved by the blood of Christ!

I said to myself, we are seeing the evidence that Satan is roaring!

I thought I had written my last book with Heaven Coming Down. It is my personal favorite of the four that have been published; a glimpse into the new heavens and the new earth described in John’s Revelation. I told my family that it was a good final book, written with hope and thanksgiving! They just knowingly smiled in a way that said, we will believe that when we see it!

I guess they knew me better, because the idea of Satan roaring rushed into my mind and would not be stilled. So I began. Then, after doing some research on this subject, I almost decided it would be too scary to write this book. Thinking about The Exorcist, Rosemary’s Baby, Amityville Terror, Cabin in the Woods, or any of the thousands of fright-night-B-movies with unknown actors, I thought, they don’t have a clue about what’s really going on in our world today!

However, I believe the Holy Spirit has given me the gift of writing and teaching and I believe I should exercise that gift. For me to quit would be like giving in to Satan’s whispers to dissuade me from writing what is on my heart to write.

If the Bible is your standard for life now and for eternity, you will already know about God…his power and love. But do you know about God’s nemesis, Satan? Do you believe in the unseen world of angels of light and angels of darkness? It’s an important subject…a biblical subject, with many faulty worldly illustrations, misunderstandings, and questions. It can be a scary subject, but once we face our fears, they no longer have power over us.

The Bible is NOT about Satan. The Bible is God’s message to his earthly family about his Son, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit, who love us and describe to us the best way to live in this world with strength and honor. However, since humanity’s fall in the Garden of Eden, the devil has tried to bait us with false teaching, lure us into sin, and turn us against each other. Among other reasons, he does this to keep us from glorifying God and spreading the good news of the gospel.

This book will be a mystery of opposites and contradictions as we recognize the spiritual war taking place in our individual lives and in our world at large: God vs. Satan, God’s angels vs. Satan’s angels, and finally, God’s ultimate and utter destruction of the forces of evil. However, none of this will be frightening for children of God.

This study outline is to present views in three sections:

1. The first will be an introduction to the spiritual and unseen realities of the world we live in today.

2. The second will describe the satanical wickedness in our world today.

3. The third section will describe our hope in the world today through Jesus Christ and our victory over evil.

Satan doesn’t stand a chance to win this battle because of Jesus Christ, and we have cause to rejoice and be thankful!

I hope you will go on this journey with me as I study with you while attempting to clarify what the Bible has to say on the subject of Satan. Because,

Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings. (1 Peter 5:8, 9).

There will be many passages of scripture for you to read. They are the most important lines of this writing. Do not be dismayed. God’s children are already victorious over Satan. God’s Son, Jesus Christ, has already crushed the lying serpent’s head by his resurrection from the grave! Hallelujah! (Genesis 3:15) As we begin this study, please reset your mind to spiritual and unseen reality:

CHAPTER 1

The Mystery of Spiritual Reality

Let’s begin by setting the stage for spiritual reality. At best, our life in this world is temporary. Is this all there is? That question has been asked millions of times with many assorted answers. I don’t know of anyone who has all the answers, but the Bible leads us in the right direction. It is the source for every thought I share. The reality of our existence is that physically, our bodies are but shells that holds our spirits and souls for a later time and a new creation. In the meantime, we should learn to think about our spiritual reality.

Spiritual Reality of God

Acknowledging God is the first step to understanding. How small our minds are to be unable to comprehend the omnipotence, the omniscience, the omnipresence of God! What is an omni attribute? Omni means all. He is all-powerful, all-knowing, and always everywhere. The omni-attributes are not mentioned in the Bible as such, but they are everywhere implied. (Read Psalm 139).

God’s being omnipotent does not mean that he can do everything. It does mean that he can do everything according to his will. Atheists and agnostics have for ages been delighted to propose things which they were sure God could not do. However, the very perfection of his nature gives place to some limitations.
