    About the Author

Her name is Kathleen Finnie Williams. She was born and raised

in a quaint little community in Farmington, Illinois. She had an

amazing childhood with great parents, three older sisters, and one

younger brother. In 1976 she married the man of her dreams and

moved to a small town called Wynne (not where) in Arkansas with

a motto City with A Smile. They have been married for 44 years.

They weren’t fortunate enough to have children (although God gave

her the children of the world to love) they have one rescue dog. She

loves to tole paint, do needle-arts, cook, read, Stampin’ Up, and

write poetry. She has crafted all her life. You’ve heard that a baby

is born with a silver spoon in its mouth — well, she was born with

a pair of scissors in her hand. God opened her eyes and ears many

years ago and she would hear a word, a phrase, envision a setting,

or recall a memory, and instantly, she would grab her pad and pen

and a poem was created. She prays that each one will test your

senses, bring you fond memories, inspiration, a smile and maybe

a tear or two. We all have our talents and a purpose here on earth.

She is so grateful for what God has given her, and she’s always

been more than glad to share her talents and to pass them on.

    Why These Poems Were Written

My mother always sent cards or letters every year to family,

friends, and relatives from all over the U.S. She mostly did this at

Christmas time to catch up on her yearly life and the raising of

her five children. When she passed away in 2002, my sister Jane

didn’t want Mom’s dedication in sending letters and cards to end.

Jane retrieved Mom’s address book and decided she would carry

out her tradition. Jane would buy cards for each holiday and write

a little word or two. One day she asked me to write poems to send

out to everyone as a way of keeping in touch. This has been going

on now for about thirteen years or more, and no one wants us to

stop. Our Mother would be proud of what we are doing, and I’m

sure she would have encouraged us to continue until the cows come

home. These poems were started because of Mom, and I hope that

you will appreciate why Jane and I keep doing this year after year.

    Dedication

To my mother, Adrienne Illing Finnie, I dedicate

this book of poems. My Mom was such an

inspiration to me, and she was so proud of

the things I accomplished in life. When I read

some of my first poems to her, she would always

comment that it was the best one and as each one

was read she repeated the same. Do you think she

was partial just a tad or perhaps a proud Mom?

To my siblings, Susan, Jane, Diana, and my brother Bruce,

they certainly gave me something to write about.

I would also like to dedicate this book to the following people...

To my great Aunt Marion Doolittle, a writer herself, from whom I

feel I inherited my writing skills.

To George Anne Draper, for her red marker

    in correcting and adding

to my work. She was an English teacher for many years

and the school’s librarian. What a gift she has been to help me

    make sense of my work.

To Dr. Mike (Who I used to work for) and his wife Kathy

for allowing me to come in to work on my days off and use

their computer to key in all my poems. I thank you from the

    bottom of my heart.

To my BFF, Melissa Holland, who listened intently to all

my poems and enjoyed each one. She would always tell me she

could see, feel, hear, smell, and taste my poetry. Her friendship

has instilled in me what true friends are, and her loyalty has

    never failed.

To my dearest friend, Cindy Parker, who I have

shared laughter, tears, happiness and even

sad times...You have always been there for me. I love you dearly!!!

To my friends, the Calvert family, who own and operate

The Cordial Cottage, a beautiful boutique,

(I call my home away from home). They

    (especially, Papa Calvert) gave me

    strength, love, friendship, and faith.

The coffee pot was always on and we

    discussed, laughed, cried, preached,

and always listened to what each had to say.

To Chandler Calvert, I give my heart for helping

me with all the technology to put my book

together and getting it sent off to the printers. He

was a major part in making my dream a

reality (my number one bucket list).

To many friends and family members in my life who have

collected my work over the years,

I FINALLY TOOK YOUR ADVICE AND

    GOT MY POEMS PUBLISHED...

Thanks to all and God Bless you.

    To My Daddy

Although I’m not the little boy

    you always dreamed of having,

I’m just the little fragile girl

    that came along instead.

Someday I hope to have a son

as fine as when Grandma had you

And I hope he’ll grow and understand

And love as I Love You.

    To My Mother

It was a lovely thought of God’s

to let me have you, Mother.

    I’ve looked and looked

    but cross my heart,

    there isn’t such another.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------

I wrote the one for my dad when I was a teen.

The one for my mother was when I was probably

    10 or 11 years old.

Mother kept these and when she passed away

in 2002, my sister found them and gave these

treasures to me. This was the beginning of

my writing ability, a gift from God.

    To Jeff

    I’m not a famous poet or a writer of fame;

I’m Kathleen (Finnie) Williams with a plain and simple name.

Jeffrey Allen Rutledge was my nephew indeed,

A child sent from God with a very special need.

His life was taken from us and I understand

When God called for him, he gladly gave his hand.

The strength, the knowledge, the special things he did

Made him like a Giant, instead of just a kid.

To others he was different, and the path seemed dark and narrow,

But from Heaven’s gate God’s eyes shown

    down upon this little sparrow.

    Jeff saw the need of others and it gave them such a lift;

It wasn’t given as charity, only as a gift.

A dozen red roses he bought his mother,

A token of love he’d given no other.

All Jeff asked was to be accepted and loved

And when his purpose ended, he was lifted above.

For into the hands of God Jeffery will always be,

Not forgotten in the hearts of family, friends, and me.

    I Love You

    Jeff,

    Aunt Kat

    April 2, 1993

My nephew was killed by a drunk driver at the age of 22.

I was unable to attend his funeral, so I did the next best thing

and wrote him a poem from my heart. My sister had this poem

engraved on the back of his tombstone. I was totally honored.

    Passing of the Rings

What is represented in the giving of a ring

And is encompassed in every living thing?

What evolves when two lives become as one

And makes a family, four daughters and a son.

What keeps a marriage alive for fifty years

And captures the laughter along with the tears?

What takes them through the ups and the downs

And keeps a house alive with all the familiar sounds?

What rules and regulations discipline a child

And keep them under wing if only for a while?

What makes a parent happy and bursting with pride

To see their son’s wedding and each daughter a bride?

What keeps each memory so dear to the heart?

    Remembering every part...

The answer to these questions mark a special date

On June 18, 1944, when Leslie took Adrienne to be his mate.

The hands are worn, and the hair has turned gray,

But the magic, the love, is shown
