    YES AND NO

Many in the body of Christ find themselves struggling with a wide range of issues that we do our best to try and resolve, yet it does not seem to work. The problem is we remain lifted in a prideful spirit of wanting to be self-made, and as a result, we have not arrived at the place where we are willing to humble ourselves and say, Enough is enough, so we can turn these things over to God and begin growing and developing our walk with God in our everyday life.

Until we do this, we will never reach or gain victory in every area of our lives, becoming balanced and whole. This place of wholeness may seem impossible to reach, but with God, all things are possible. The Bible declares in Job 1:1 that Job was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and eschewed evil. This word, perfect, doesn’t mean that Job was without flaws or faults; rather, it means Job was mature in his faith or what he believed about God, and he was balanced and wholesome, for he reached the place where he learned the art of saying yes to God and no to the adversary.

For the most part, I believe we readily want to say yes to God, but we fail to simultaneously say no to the enemy who comes to kill, steal, and destroy our lives.

When we say yes to God without giving our no to the devil, we are living an unstable life. The Bible declares in James 1:8 that a double-minded man is unstable in all his ways.

This passage describes someone whose interests or loyalties are divided. He is wavering, uncertain, two-faced, half-hearted, and unsure of which direction he is going. Sadly, much of our teaching on how to obtain victory focuses on telling us it is to be found in our yes.

While this is true to a certain degree, the scripture shows us there is also power in saying no. James 4:7 declares that we should resist the devil, and he will flee from you. The word resist denotes denial, refusal, or opposing. In other words, when we resist the devil, we are saying no to his advances or whatever else he is trying to get us to do. No is not a dirty word for a Christian, provided it is used correctly.

We must learn to say yes to God continually and no to the devil perpetually if we ever hope to have the victory in our lives. I will readily admit that saying no is never easy to do. It is much more pleasant to focus on the positive rather than the negative, but saying no is not impossible when you are determined to succeed in accomplishing those things God has set your mind to. Everyone can attest to the myriad difficulties we face in our everyday lives, and we can all say, Yes, the struggle is real, no matter what area we face our temptations in. These battles are not the same for everyone. We may struggle in different areas of our lives, but we all have the same ability to achieve victory if we are willing to follow God’s formula.

I do not know what your struggles are; it may be a perversion, such as pornography; it may be smoking, drinking, overeating, wasting time, fornication, or adultery. It may be lies, lust in sexual areas or otherwise, masturbation, or perhaps it is in the area of your faith. It may be prayerlessness or perhaps having the courage to say no to a friend or loved one when they ask for your time, even though you know that you cannot give of yourself at that moment. It may be prioritizing your time or learning to say no to doubt, fear, or even anxiety.

Whatever area you find yourself struggling in, it is crucial to know when to say yes to God and no to the devil. Saying no to the devil should be an everyday thing for us, and the only way we can win against him is if we consistently deny him while walking in the spirit.

We must understand that the devil never gives up or takes a day off; he will come and torment you for a season, then he will back off and give you a rest in order to get you to let your guard down. But one promise you can take to the bank is that he will always resurface. He will come after you again during a time when you are not focused or are distracted. It is the enemy’s mission to come after God’s children, and if we do not take the time to learn how he operates, he finds it easy to catch us unaware. We must understand that the enemy is very strategic, and he is very patient in his endeavors to get you to succumb to his traps. Therefore, the Bible declares in 2 Corinthians 2:11, Lest Satan should get an advantage of us for we are not ignorant of his devices. The devil has had over six thousand years of experience studying human behavior and undoubtedly knows you better than you know yourself. He uses this knowledge to place specific devices in place that are tailored to our areas of weakness to trap us, to cause us to lose our way, thereby ultimately destroying God’s plan for our lives.

As children of the kingdom, our no must be loud and bold. The enemy pretends to be deaf to our no at times, so when we speak it, our words must be bold, seeming to come from a place of authority and sincerity, because the enemy will only listen to the sincerity of your no!

In the chapters to come, I will guide you to different scriptures we can use and apply to turn us into winners. We have been given the word of God so we can overcome. In Psalm 119:11, David declares, Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee. Hebrews 4:12 states, For the word of God is quick and powerful and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Our yeses and our no’s must be authentic and sincere. There are times when God tests both our yes and no to see if we truly mean what we have declared. In Genesis 12, God gave Abraham a promise that he would bless him and give him a nation. Then many years passed and Abraham still did not have a son. When Abraham inquired of God, He assured them of his promise.

Despite this assurance, Abraham and Sarah felt they could not
