About the Artist
INTRODUCTION
I grew up in a small town on the East Coast, raised to be patriotic and to have a heart to serve my country. My family attended or participated in all the local parades. My siblings, cousins, and I watched our grandparents march proudly with the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). All my uncles and my dad served in World War II; every house I visited had a military photo displayed. Equally pervasive was the gravity of the Vietnam War, which was in the news every day during my childhood.
Therefore, when I finally decided what to do with my life, it was not surprising that I made the choice to join the military. I served in the Marine Corps for three years, and then, after a short break in service, I served twenty-four years in the Coast Guard. I found my niche in the second half of my career, using my facilitating talents to deliver professional development workshops, teaching leadership skills and conducting performance improvement workshops as an internal consultant with the Coast Guard. My final tour with the Coast Guard was as school chief for Instructional Systems School, managing a school that taught instructors how to be more effective and offering courses in course development.
When I transitioned out of the military after twenty-seven years, I was determined to find my true passion. I didn’t want to work for the sake of working. I wanted to be called, to be drawn into a field, and I was willing to wait for it. I planned my transition from the military to be debt-free (other than my house) and confident that if I didn’t want to work, I wouldn’t be obligated to. I was free at last to enjoy the carefree life of lunches and fundraisers, volunteering and vacationing. I taught myself to play the saxophone and the ukulele. I bought an electric guitar and took lessons so I could rock out. I embraced my new reality! It took me seven years before I looked myself in the mirror and said, Is this it?
How many more lunches, how many more wine tasting parties or backyard jam sessions would it take to bring on that feeling of fulfillment—that feeling that it was a day well spent in this body, on this planet. Just as I was feeling a bit blue about my lack of clarity, I got an answer.
My daughter was away at a gap year program called LEAPNOW. She was not enjoying the traditional college experience, so we found an alternative one-year program that involved world travel, international internships, and a curriculum meant to inspire self-discovery and a graceful yet powerful transition into independent adulthood. While studying on campus, she selected a book from the library titled Destiny of the Souls, by Michael Newton. When my wife and I picked her up for Thanksgiving break, she talked about that book all the way home. I was intrigued by her excitement, so I read the book.
It was a captivating book written by a hypnotherapist. It contained thousands of case studies where clients under hypnosis were regressed beyond this lifetime but before a previous lifetime, the period in between incarnations. I was compelled to find out about this unusual field of healing arts described in the book. I googled hypnotherapy schools, and as if the universe was conspiring in my favor, the longest running and most creditable hypnotherapy school in the US was literally thirty minutes up the road from where I lived. I signed up immediately. My excitement was high, and my interest was piqued.
It was during this hypnotherapy training that everything changed for me and everyone in my orbit. I completed my instruction at the Hypnotherapy Training Institute, learning from legends in their field, Randall Churchill and Cheryl Canfield. They lit a fire in me and opened my heart and eyes to this rich and rewarding work. Hypnotherapy is a healing art that accesses the subconscious mind, which is the reservoir of emotions, beliefs, imagination, habits, and intuition. Through hypnosis, people become aware of beliefs that are holding them back from health and happiness. During hypnosis, a person becomes aware of subconscious programing and an abundance of higher intelligence emerges and becomes available. The awareness can bring on complete recovery in a short period. I experienced this healing power more than once during my training, and I watched my classmates experience it as well.
After graduating, I had a powerful thirst for more, so I began to read books by Deepak Chopra, Eckhart Tolle, and Abraham Hicks. I was filled with inspiration, my heart overflowing as I tested my new skills and knowledge with close friends and family with surprisingly encouraging results. As I grew more comfortable, I began to customize my hypnotherapy sessions. I started adding chakra balancing, guided imagery, and sound therapy in the form of singing bowls. Initially, I only played the singing bowls in conjunction with clients’ induction into hypnosis as a way to relax them. Over time, I began to notice that the vibration of the singing bowls was palpable and seemed to clear the room of negative or undesirable energy. I fell in love with the way they created the perfect space for openness and calm.
I felt so uplifted by these sacred frequencies that I began collecting them. I now own a complete set of crystal singing bowls, tuning forks, Tibetan chakra singing bowls, and a few Japanese singing bowls. These tones have enriched and lifted my internal experience to such a degree that I have made it a daily ritual to play each one, opening my chakras and harmonizing my energies to the sacred frequencies. This practice also fills my home with the vibration of love.
Music is a natural complement to any mindfulness practice, and it took on an important aspect of my expression as a hypnotherapist. I have always been drawn to music. When I was ten
