    Of all foods, none is so closely linked with the course of human history as bread. Breadmaking commenced when primitive man first pounded edible grains between two large stones, mixing the resultant meal with water and baking the mixture on hot, flat stones. It is interesting at this point to note the direct linkage between the primitive hot stone and the modern hot plate.

    It has always been accepted that the first reference to a baker in history is contained in the 40th chapter of Genesis. It refers to Pharaoh’s chief baker, who was hanged. The words chief baker seems proof of the fact that baking had been established as a craft and was not solely a domestic practice.

    It was the chance discovery of a cuneiform tablet some years ago that changed this conception, for, when it was deciphered, an earlier baker stepped out
