I am elated to have all my work in one volume and at ones fingertips. In saying, I will write until I can't hold a pen in my hand. I will write until I cannot this sheet fold, to send you a poem written upon. I will write until, I don't know when, maybe to the end of time.

    THE GHOST TRAIN

An adventuresome young boy this morning embarks to see the world on his own. With a nickel in his pocket, he is on his way, seeking an exciting fantasy and nursing a hope that someday his dream will really come true—be it only a reverie of flying in space to a new planet or sailing around the world or digging for gold in Africa. There are so many dreams for a ten-year-old boy to achieve, especially one that is as gallant and dashing as he is. On this day he feels that this is a good unplanned and unintentional excursion that cannot be set aside till later.

Lad, don’t be late for dinner. We’re having spaghetti and meatballs. It’s your favorite. Don’t forget, be back early, Lad’s mother calls to her son as he is on his way, almost out of hearing distance.

Lad answers without slowing down his walk, How could I forget? Never in a hundred years. See you later, Mom.

As the boy meanders along, his mind is developing a fantasy of heroism. On his way, slashing through a high grassy field, he visions a castle. He then encounters a dragon and slays it as a knight most certainly would. And then victoriously, with his sword dragging along on the ground at his side, he proudly stands before the castle, proclaiming, I am here. Lower the drawbridge for me to cross. I am waiting—I did slay the feared dragon with my sword this fateful morning. And I say victoriously, I did cut down the formidable dragon, and I say again, lower the drawbridge and let me cross over the moat and enter the castle so that we all can celebrate this monumental conquest.

Now at this juncture, and as Lad faces reality, he finds himself ascending a lofty rocky hill. There, to his surprise, at the top of the hill is a railroad track. How convenient, he thinks. This is a good place to start my journey to adventure. I’ve always wanted to walk along a railroad track. This is where I will start on my road to see everything I read about in books. Oh, to see the Great Pyramids of Egypt and the Great Wall of China. There is so much to see and do. And yes, I have to climb the highest mountain in the world and tell everyone I did it.

As Lad continues his undertaking adventure, he begins to have second thoughts for the moment.

Well, maybe, after all, I won’t leave today. Tomorrow I can get more money and bring along a sandwich or two. As for now, I’ll walk along this railroad track and count the ties as I go along. Walking on these ties is fun. Just stepping on one and then onto another gets me on to something unfamiliar that I try to detect as a true goal that is different and is an exciting experience . These ties go on and on. They seem to never end. I like walking on them. It’s easy, and I can count them as I go along on my way,
