About this ebook

Twenty thousand years in the future, after domestic cats have gone extinct, scientists recreate a few and allow them to flourish in order to revive the species. But once the cats are released into the wild, they develop both wings and extraordinary intellectual abilities. As human society begins to collapse, the winged cats form an agency called World Feline Rescue and Defense Society, dedicated to helping all felines and protecting them from the threat of domestication. With hidden bases across the world and secret methods of transport, the WFRDS seeks to enlist strong wildcats with the hope of preserving civilization. They also create an elite team known as Angels, who protect both cats and humans. One young cat, Blaze, is recruited to the Angels—and soon finds herself facing a greater evil than she could ever have imagined. In this science fiction novel, an intelligent winged cat named Blaze joins a secretive group of special operatives designed to protect both humans and felines.

    THE BEGINNING

T wenty-thousand years into the future, the entire species of domestic cats went extinct. To revive the species, scientists re-created a few, and let them flourish. Little did they know there was a major flaw. After releasing the new cats into what is left of the wild – a measly one square acre of uncultivated grassland and trees- the cats scattered. There the flaw showed. All the cats developed strong wings. One-hundred years later, the felines have been tamed again. Only a small group of winged cats remained in the wild. As the crime rates rose, this group of cats noted and grew into geniuses. Now being smarter than humans, the cats came together and formed an unanimous group that was dedicated to protecting all felines as the humans turned on themselves and slowly destroyed one another. Later named the World Feline Rescue and Defense Society (WFRDS), the organization built many hidden bases and transport methods that are still unknown down to this day. As the tamed cats declined and became weaker with each generation, the WFRDS has recruited many of the strong wildcats that have realized the threat of domestication. An elite team of these cats called Angels (tasked with protecting felines, and humans alike) are kept in greater secrecy; recognizable only by the collars they wear.

This is the story of a particular young WFRDS she-cat that was severely injured protecting a human while undercover on a mission. She was healed and recruited as an Angel by the unanimous and respected overall leader of the WFRDS; the only one who knows of the special Angels besides the Angels themselves.

    FOREWARDS

T he Siamese cat lunged at the intruder, claws out. The robber felt a sharp pain in his leg and kicked at it. Seconds later, he heard a sickening crack, but he shrugged it off and continued his search.

All I saw was black until a burst of white light shone through. It was bright and I squinted. As the light dimmed, I saw a dark gray cat with bright orange eyes. I could only see his face. Blaze, he said, You have been accepted as an Angel, and chosen to help the WFRDS further protect cats and humans all over the world. You must tell no one of this status as an Angel.

I was confused, and a bit scared. Where is it and how do I get there? I asked.

To find the hidden base, start at the subway, you will receive clues from there. He said.

The world started to fade slowly, leaving only his glowing flame-colored eyes. Am I dead? I asked.

The tom chuckled. No, now go to sleep.

Before I blacked out again, I looked down to see a golden medallion with a shiny black paw print on it. It shimmered faintly, and then I fell asleep.

    CHAPTER 1

A s I padded through the murky puddles in the alley, I spotted a brown cat, eating what was left of a discarded chicken leg. Do you know where Buffalo lane is? I asked.

Yes, said the tom, Why would you be interested in it? There’s no food there.

I huff. Alright… I guess? I would just like to go there.

    The tom raises a brow.

    Please? I plead.

What’s in it for me? The tom sits stubbornly.

I think for a moment, Well, I only assumed you knew your way around so well. I am starting to doubt that though. I say and begin to turn away.

The tom stops me. Okay, okay. No need to insult my intelligence now. Follow me, will you? He started walking west, and I followed.

So, why do you have golden fur? Asked the tom.

    Excuse me? I meowed confused.

The tom went silent, gathering his thoughts. I mean; what breed are you? He asked.

I thought for a moment. I`m not a certain breed in general, but in Mesopotamia, I would be called a silo-melvìse. I said.

Oh, said the tom. You must be a special one then.

I turn an ear back. What do you mean? Have you never heard of that? I ask.

He stops walking for a moment. Actually, I have. They are a breed with many myths behind it. Legend says they were direct descendants of lions with just as much bravery. He steps through a puddle with a sigh. I am just a little disappointed that the silo-melvìse aren’t what they used to be."

I frown. And what is that supposed to mean?

He looks up. I’m just saying… not to offend… they have just lost the luster they used to have.

I reel. Who are you to say something like that? You aren’t exactly a purebred anything are you?

The tom narrows his eyes. For someone to want my help you certainly aren’t very polite.

I exhale. Sorry. It’s just… my parents used to say it to me all the time. It’s the only thing I can remember them by.

The tome sighs. I understand. Name`s Brandy, he said, What`s yours?

    Blaze, I said.

Brandy turned to look at me. Well, Blaze, he mewed, Pleasure to meet you.

I nodded in acknowledgment. After about 5 minutes of wading in shallow muddy puddles, and slipping on oil slick roads, the satisfying words were finally spoken.

    We’re here, said Brandy.

I sighed. Rediy’s house was here, and I wanted to drop in before I went to the WFRDS base, wherever that was. I didn’t remember. How long was it since I was there? I thought. I vaguely remembered a few young faces. My friends? They must be much older by now! Thanks Brandy! I owe you one! I call over my shoulder as I take off running down the street. I spread my wings and lifted silently into the air.

The wind blew rashly over the treetops. I landed next to a house and walked up the stairs slowly, folding my wings. I stood on the prickly doormat and knocked. The door slowly crept open to reveal a bluish-gray she-cat.

    Um, hi, I said.

Who are you and why are you here! She yelled.

I was confused. Do you know where Rediy is? I asked.

    The she-cat’s eyes widened. Blaze?

    Rediy! I exclaimed.

    Come on in, said Rediy.

I padded past the prickly mat on the porch. I spotted a three-pack of dog collars and a leash. Rediy? I said. I don’t recall your owners having a dog.

Rediy turned around. I noticed the collars, leashes and food a while ago. My owners have been making calls and I overheard that they are getting a dog, she said, which is why I’m building this. She said and pointed her paw at an enormous fort that extended up to the top of her high ceiling. She was a skilled engineer.

I gawked at the massive fortress.

No time to wait, Blaze, my owners are on their way home already, meowed Rediy, breaking my thoughts.

I followed her as she darted across the room and through a tunnel that was barely visible from under a small table. We came out of the other end and ended up inside the fort. There was a long black blanket covering the floor. Rediy grabbed a pair of scissors in her mouth and cut a thick string that was taped to the ground. Immediately I heard a rustle and a giant tent fell over the fort, casting a blue glow into the building. I noticed a staircase going up and disappearing. Rediy started up them, signaling me with her tail. As we climbed, I noticed that we were outside, on the roof. The stairs leveled out into the exit. We walked out onto the roof. I already knew what that meant. We’re running away. Something shiny glinted in the sun. I looked down and saw my new medallion. The WFRDS. The gray cat said to go there.

Rediy, there’s a place… I started, unfolding my wings, a mysterious cat told me about it. He said I need to go there, and you can come with me!

Rediy perked up. How do we get there? She asked.

I thought back to what the cat said. First, we find Brandy.

Although confused, Rediy spread her dappled wings, and we took off.

We flew above the countless houses in Rediy’s neighborhood. A red car passed beneath us.

Those are my owners Rediy sighed.

We saw the intersection where the road met the highway. I banked right, heading back towards the alley where I had met Brandy. I spotted a brown cat perched on a wooden fence. Rediy, there, I said, pointing to him with a paw.

We descended quickly. As we got closer, I flapped lightly, slowing my fall. Within 5 feet of Brandy, we closed our wings and braced for the landing. I landed on my paws and looked back to check on Rediy. She followed me over to the fence. Brandy looked down at us.

    Blaze, right? He asked.

    I nodded.

Who’s that with you? He meowed.

My name is Rediy, she said, and you’re Brandy?

    Brandy nodded.

We need help getting to the subway, I meowed, and you know your way around here well.

Brandy nodded. Well, he said bashfully, I do sightsee a lot.

    Rediy leaned forward a little.

I can help you, decided Brandy, but might I ask why you want to go there?

Before I could respond, a spotted gray she-cat with lavender eyes hopped over the fence and landed next to me. Hey, she said, what are you guys talking about? I noted her British accent.

We are just about to head to the subway, and who are you? I asked.

The she-cat glanced at a passing car. My name is Lilac.

Rediy turned to Brandy. We are planning on going to a safe place that Blaze told me about, she meowed.

I nodded. A cat told me to go to the subway, and that I’ll get a clue from there.

    Brandy thought for a
