The Spirits of Romance and Music - Edward Cassani

    THE SPIRIT OF ROMANCE

    AND THE SPIRIT OF MUSIC

    Before the universe was imagined

    With blithesome light.

    And

Before the universe was set in time.

The Spirits of Romance and Music

Have been sent forth in the universe

    On to a search,

A search to find each other.

A meeting that hopefully could happen did happen.

A meeting attested with extraordinary elegance, beauty, and splendor.

    United with a gentle wind,

Their engagement is now their destiny.

The Spirit of Romance held out his hand,

Bringing the Spirit of Music onto the elephant.

    They rode away in triumph,

With all the animals following in a joyful procession,

    Leaving behind the mountain

Now taking the form of a volcano.

This is not the end of the story but rather the beginning.

A beginning of romance and music set in motion forever.

    A STAR IS FALLING

Don’t lead me down this unknown road

In my garden, where flowers grow

And where my father told stories of enchanting and romantic days.

I perceive my swing sits empty now, with flowers spent nearby.

As the swing gets pushed by a passing breeze,

Unaware, not finding my footsteps on the ground,

    Nor my heart in happiness.

Suddenly the whistle of the train enters my soul.

Dogs are barking in the night.

The train slowly comes to a stop.

Faces near me are confused and lined with fear.

Eyes search for friendliness in vain.

Our bodies indecently abused—wait with longing and silent pain.

This night of great turmoil—I want to cry.

I want to sleep and dream of chasing butterflies.

Is this a place to die?

In a quick moment, a beam of light shone in my eyes.

I covered my face with my hands and turned around.

When I lowered my hand, the moon was racing with the clouds.

Stars seemingly dim except one that shone radiantly.

I watched the star sending out its glowing dust,

    Then gradually dropping
