Howard Carter asserted that he found ‘wonderful things’ when he opened the sealed doorway to discover Tutankhamun’s sarcophagus. His reaction was reflected in the wonderful things that emerged from the poetry competition celebrating the event a century later. This competition inspired writers to seek out every aspect of the story. The events surrounding the discovery, historical facts, personal reflections, the mythology of the curse, and a range of other associated themes brought the poems to life.
