Today is the first day of a new year. We have many new beginnings in our lifetime. The first is a new beginning at birth. Next is a new beginning at the first day of school. And we continue with a new beginning at graduation, a new beginning with our first job, a new beginning when we say I do, a new beginning when we yield to a divine calling, and most of us face our new beginnings in fear and trembling. Psa. 56:4, Psa. 118:6; and Heb. 13:6 all state, I will not fear what man shall do unto me. For the most part we are fearful of others. We fear what they will think, what will they do? Will they accept me? Can I work with that person? How can I learn to be their friend? Will they betray my confidence? What are the dangers ahead? Fear, fear, fear! One of the first things that mankind spoke in Gen. 3:10 when Adam said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; and I hid myself. We cannot allow fear to rule our lives. Life is an adventure and we are not naked if we know a lot about God’s Word and His will in all things. So it is time to gain all the knowledge about God’s will that you can this year. Enjoy every experience of life because they are learning experiences. Clothe yourself with knowledge and experience which produces wisdom. This year, then, will be the most productive year of your life. {Delete this). Amen!

Do you ever feel like you’ve wasted your life? Thinking of what could have been? It’s a trick of the carnal mind to depress us. We all feel inadequate at times. My adversary talks to me like that all the time. But the reality is that anything and everything I’ve ever done, I’ve ever been, I’ve ever thought or that I’ve ever experienced…in my belief…was orchestrated by the hand of God to teach me things about God, human nature, and the mechanics of life. It is in the Bible, God’s plan for the earth, true love, faithfulness, and how to compare false happiness with the true joy of the Lord, that we all want and need. I take refuge in the promises of God because they continually remind me of His sovereignty over my life. He is faithful in His promises: and, we have to develop the patience to wait for His timing for the promises to become a reality in our own life and circumstance. A dear friend is faithful in sending me an email every day with a promise from Scripture. Most of the time they exactly fit the situation I’m facing or, that I am responsible for. They are promises that encourage and strengthen the inner man. II Cor. 4:15-16 is worth sharing at this point so that we understand the why of what we face daily. For all things are for your sakes, that the abundant grace might through the thanksgiving of many redound to the glory of God. :16 For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day. It is important that we give God thanks for all the training and learning processes He puts us through. H.B. Taylor said: Praising God for your blessings extends them. Praising God for your miseries quickly ends them.

A precious old-time friend of mine used to come to the Tuesday morning service and occasionally she would stand and sing this chorus; He’s still working on me. Making me what I ought to be. I can hear her sweet voice now. From time to time we get to thinking that we’re doing pretty good. I don’t smoke, don’t drink, don’t cuss, don’t gamble, don’t beat my wife, don’t steal, etc. etc. But if we do begin to think that way, God will see to it that we hit a wall. He knows how to take the starch out of us. Something will happen that we can’t handle, or at least don’t know how to handle. Then, we have to stop and examine our own hearts, humble ourselves and turn to the Word for council. It’s so hard for the flesh to admit, I’m not perfect. Ha! But we have hope that the day will come when He is finished working on us and we stand in the image and likeness of the Nazarene. Eph. 4:13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man/woman, unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ. That’s a mouth-full, wouldn’t you say? When we stand in front of the mirror and look at ourselves, we must learn to see Jesus standing behind us, smiling, with arms outstretched, and sweetly saying, You’re my responsibility and I’ll finish the work I’ve begun, Phil. 1:6 Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ: He never gives up.

Years ago some dear friends of ours invited my wife and me to a concert to hear and see the Lawrence Welk show downtown San Antonio. My wife loved those kinds of performances but I could have cared less…but I smiled at my rose-bud and went. When the curtain opened on the huge orchestra and on Lawrence Welk, it was like the resurrection had transpired. The entire huge audience stood to its feet and roared approval. It was not my cup of tea, but I was soon impressed with it all because the Lord began to anoint my mind and speak to me. I suddenly saw that Orchestra as the resurrected Body of Christ, the Church, with Jesus as its leader. Their ministries fill the air and charged everyone there with joy. The Lord showed me that those musicians were like you and me. We’re in training for reining, and after we’re trained, we will minister to the world in complete harmony and perfect timing while following our leader, King Jesus. He directs us to fulfill divine destiny in preaching, teaching, and bringing all souls to their knees to honor Him. When the program finished, everyone was on his feet applauding Lawrence Welk and his magnificent company. The world at large will one day be applauding the King of kings and Lord of lords for transforming the atmosphere of the earth from death to life, from hopelessness into resurrection life. The Orchestra was like a resurrected body that had spent thousands of hours in training to bring this one great crescendo of glory to the masses. Jesus is coming…let Him get you ready to play, sing, preach, teach, administrate, and be part of resurrection life in the Kingdom.

Many years ago I attended a Johnny Cash concert at a large auditorium down town. We sat for quite awhile and waited. Finally, he and his band came on stage. The music began and Johnny Cash sang a couple of songs. I thought he sang a little off key in spots: he sang a little off beat at spots too. I thought to myself, Is this what I came to hear? The third song he sang was a verse and a chorus. Just as the bridge ended he stepped up to the microphone and said, Hello, I’m Johnny Cash…and it was as if he became a different performer." I instantly recognized that he had become anointed. Yes, anointed. It was his life’s calling to entertain. It reminded me of when I’m singing for Jesus, or preaching, or teaching a Bible class. I start off without the anointing most of the time, but it doesn’t take long until I feel the Holy Spirit rise up within me. The words begin to flow better: and, I hear myself preaching or teaching things I had never thought of before. If you have Jesus in your life, and if you() are very dedicated to him, His anointing will rise up within you at times when you need it and you will suddenly feel His presence in power. To sing, preach, teach like a man from another world…but it’s the God from the other world that does it.

It is so important that we understand that the Bible is a book for all ages, and a book for all time-ages too. The character of God never changes, nor does His love for His creation. He has the great heart of a Heavenly Father that loves His creation and children (born again) enough to teach us of His ways in spite of our rebellious nature. He does that through sixty-six books called the Holy Bible. Within the framework of those pages there is milk, bread, and meat. Milk is symbolic of the simplicity of the Gospel of Jesus Christ which says, Only believe in Jesus, I Cor. 3:2; Heb. 5:12-13; I Pet. 2:2. It means His virgin birth, holy and miraculous life, death, burial and resurrection, and His promise to return. That’s the milk of life that Christians believed and died for in the early church. Bread, on the other hand is a symbol of the principles of Christ and His righteousness and holy life, John 6:33-35. This is the Christian lifestyle of holiness. Meat, on the other hand, is for the more mature Christian, I Cor. 3:2, 10:3; Heb. 5:12-14. The milk, bread, and meat of God’s Word are vital for our growth and maturing in Christ Jesus. As eating a variety of food produces good health to our body, so a variety of truths from Scripture produce a healthy Christian.

Love makes the world go ‘round. I’ve heard that statement many times from many sources. As a pastor of over fifty-one years, I believe it. The people that are truly loved are the happiest people I know. There are so many phonies (counterfeits) in the world today, that when you find someone who is real, it is so refreshing. Knowing how to love someone unconditionally is a practice that must be practiced. The temptation to change people lives is in us all, but hardly ever works. The woman that marries a man and thinks she can change him is usually disappointed. Women marry men and think they can change them. Men marry women and are shocked when they discover that she will go through several changes during their marital lifetime. The secret is being able to let people be people and love them the way they are. We don’t have to love their bad ways, but loving people is what God does. If we are to really be in His image and likeness, we must learn to love people the same way. Nobody said it would be easy, but it’s His command. Love your neighbor, love your enemies, and love yourself. What a challenge we face today: but, we don’t face it alone. Jesus helps us.

    January 8th

We all love our families and are grieved when anyone in our family is suffering. Whether it’s an emotional problem or a physical problem, there is something within us that wants to help. Our compassion, many times, overrides our common sense and in our effort to help we get rejected. It is always good to say, I’m here for you if you need me. But it’s not good to advise or even do what needs to be done without a request. I see many people going through hard times and feel compassion for them. I want to rush to them to help. But I’ve learned over many years of dealing with human nature that some people are very private. So, I wait until the Lord opens a door for me to enter. Usually, the door is open by their telling me of their problem and asking if I can help. Sometimes, they are too embarrassed to ask for help. So I say, How are you doing? If they say, okay I know they are not ready. But if they respond by relating the burden, that’s an open door for me to step in and offer my assistance or council. How can I help you? We all need help on occasion. God doesn’t always help us supernaturally. Sometimes He uses people, good friends, doctors, a pastor, or a next door neighbor. Let Jesus help you today in whatever way He chooses. Don’t be afraid to let Him choose the means.

When life’s trials are getting too tough for us to handle, they’re getting just about right for Jesus. As King, Creator, Redeemer/Savior, Comforter, Great Physician, Father, and friend, He is qualified to address any issue of life and solve it. There are times, however, that we forget what all He is to us. And we also forget how to pray and ask for His assistance. The Bible says that …if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us… Wow! But we don’t always know His will. What do we do then? We have to pray, …nevertheless not my will but thine be done… which is not always easy to do. If you feel trapped today in circumstances you can’t seem to resolve or even understand, our Lord is looking through the lattice and sees our needs. He has promised to meet those needs in His timing and in His way. That’s when we must rely on Isa. 40:31…But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint. Lord, help me to wait upon thee. Amen!

    January 10th

God is your Savior, Deliverer, Comforter, and as such, He meets your needs in a variety of ways. First, as Savior He heals the soul through His grace: and he heals the body from sickness. Second, He is our Deliverer in that His Word and presence in our mind delivers us from fears. Third, He is the great Comforter when we suffer the various kinds of losses. How does He do all of this? Through His written Word, prayer, and praise. I go to His Word (The Holy Bible) when I need help of any kind and I find not only the promise or council that I need, but peace of mind during the process. Even if you don’t understand the Bible when you read it, keep on reading. The Holy Spirit will cause passages, verses, and truths to leap from the pages and enlighten you, fill you with faith, and establish you in a state of trust that you didn’t have before. The Bible is the most valuable book you will ever have in your library. It is a treasure chest of hope and help.

The fundamentals of the Gospel of Jesus Christ stands on four legs like a four-legged stool. Each leg can represent one of the fundamentals: the virgin birth, His holy miraculous life, His death and resurrection, and (), His promise to return again. While most Christians believe Christ is coming again, many Christians do not, and, therefore, do not live as though He might come any moment. It pays to ask ourselves, If Jesus Christ should return at this moment, am I ready to meet Him face to face? People who have had a born again experience, are confident that, should the grim reaper come their way, they would go to heaven. Many people who have never acknowledged that Jesus of Nazareth was the Son of God, according to the Christian faith, would not be ready to meet Him. But it is so easy. Asking God to make the above Gospel a reality in one’s life is a private thing in one’s own conscience. The transformation from darkness into light can happen in an instant. A German Nazi officer during WWII acknowledged Christ as his Savior. When a colleague asked him why he did it, he said, I just didn’t want to take the chance that those Christians are right. Jesus is passing this way; don’t turn Him away.

(A song that touches the heart, author unknown) When you’re down and out, all alone, sad and blue, and you just don’t know where to go, or who to see, or what to do. I have a friend who cares. He really cares. He cares for you in a way that nobody else you’ve ever met, could ever do. His heart is full of love, for everyone, He’s faithful and true and His love will see you through. I have a friend, this friend of mine, He wants to be your friend too. I have a friend, and it’s so easy to know Him. He’s made of velvet and peace, and it’s so easy to know Him. I have a friend, and it’s so easy to love Him. He’s got a heart full of love, and it’s so easy to love Him. (This is my testimony of the Jesus Christ that is a friend that sticks closer than a brother: Proverbs 18:24). Christ in you the hope of glory: Colossians 1:27. The Christian religion (faith) is the only religion in the world that can feel God, hear His voice, apply His principles and reap the benefits. He is an ever present help in times of trouble: Psa. 46:1. Also, Psa. 9:9; 9:13; 20:1; *27:5; 32:7; 37:39; 50:15; 59:16: someone who is receiving this today is in need to read them all.

    January 13th

A friend of mine asked me, How have you managed to preach and pastor the same church for over fifty years and not get burned out? The answer is quite simple. I love Jesus whom I believe is the person of God. In the beginning He spoke the worlds into existence. God did not create everything from nothing. He spoke into existence what was already IN HIM. The God of the Bible, whom we call Jesus, created all things for His pleasure and purpose: Revelation 4:11. He had a plan from the beginning that all things would reveal His will, His character, His personality, His love, His grace, His power, His justice, and His forgiveness. God uses even the negative things in this world to reveal His plan for the humanities; but, we humans have a hard time understanding God’s ways: Rom. 11:33; Isa. 55:8-9. We have the hope that in His timing, our God of the Bible, whom we call Jesus, will win the earth and all things there in: I Corinthians 15:28. You and I are heirs and fellow heirs with Jesus Christ. The earth shall be full of the glory of God as the waters cover the sea: Hab. 2:14. Expand your vision today. There’s a higher power in charge.

    January 14th

A lady who was desperate came to me because of overwhelming financial difficulties. She spent about twenty minutes telling me of the possibility of losing her home, of utilities that were months behind, of two children with one in college, of no job, etc. After she finally exhausted her list, I asked her one simple question, Do you tithe to God? She said, No! So I said, No wonder you are in financial trouble. If you want to make money, give consistently of your tithe and offerings to support the Gospel of Jesus Christ and God will bless you. You will never have to pray and ask God for money again. My wife and I have lived that way for over fifty years. We give God ten percent of every dollar that came through our hands: Malachi 3:8; Luke 6:38. People are usually born with an envious, covetous, stingy nature that we must overcome in order to be blessed and at the same time have peace of mind; like people who have millions of dollars but no peace of mind. They are not content, and they are afraid someone is going to take their money. They need to have that peace of mind. SO you can’t out-give God! We sing a chorus at Bethesda that goes like this. You, can’t, beat God givin’, no matter how hard you try. Just as sure as you’re livin’, there’s a God on high. The more you give to Him, the more He’ll give to you, so keep on givin’, and He’ll keep blessin’ you…so…you, can’t, beat God givin’. No matter how hard you try. To you that don’t believe in tithing, you might want to read the New Testament, it teaches MORE than ten percent.

    January 15th

The name of the Lord is a strong tower and the righteous runneth into it, and is safe, Proverbs 18:10. The two most important words in this verse are righteous and safe and I’ll tell you why. Righteous means that you are striving to please Jesus Christ in your actions, attitudes, and relationships. We don’t strive to get saved. Salvation is a free gift. Our job is to learn what pleases the Lord and live it through the power of His Holy Spirit within. The second word to be aware of is safe because we all need safety all the time. Safety from ourselves, safety from crimes, safety from disease, safety from a variety of trouble, and safety from the elements, i.e., accidents and natural disasters. The name of the Lord is actually the will of God demonstrated in your actions and attitude. When you are in God’s will, you’re in a heavenly place. When you are out of God’s will, you are in a miserable place, Psalms 143:10; Hebrews 10:7. When we are operating in the will of God we are surrounded with His grace, mercy, and power. His name is His will…Nevertheless, not my will but thine be done, Luke 22:42. All this requires a self-examination and being honest with ourselves, asking ourselves the question, Am I really more interested in pleasing Jesus than pleasing myself and others? The way you answer that question can mean the difference in success or failure in life, in general.

    January 16th

Most of us need lots of God’s mercy applied to our lives because of the mistakes we make and the variety of ways we can grieve the Holy Spirit. Thirty-four times David mentions that God’s mercy endureth forever. Because David was so aware of his own feelings, shortcomings, and dumb decisions, he would plead for mercy, and God would grant it. God forgave David the death penalty for his adultery with Bathsheba and the murder of her husband. Unthinkable! But that’s why David had such a deep appreciation for God’s mercy. When we grieve our Lord, we ask for forgiveness…mercy. Don’t chasten me Lord, be merciful. Don’t hang me out to dry, be merciful. And through the vehicle of repentance we are granted mercy most of the time. Mercy is letting someone off of the hook, so to speak. Well, what’s the difference between mercy and grace? I’m glad you asked. Mercy is forgiving. Grace is the offer to sit with Jesus in His throne, in spite of what you did to need mercy. There is very little mercy in the justice system or the corporate system of today. However, one day God had mercy on me; and He has invited me to sit with Him in His throne in His Kingdom. Hallelujah! What a CEO Jesus is!

    January 17th

There are three ways to cook a turkey, whether it’s Thanksgiving or not. God cooks us turkeys three different ways. First, He cooks us in the learning experiences. We usually have to go through a personal experience to learn His principles and ways…along with reading the Bible from cover to cover. The heat is on when we have to know something important, but have never taken the time to learn. Second, God cooks us in the fire of trials and tests. The negative things that happen in life can be a test of your faith or even a test of your lack of consistency in serving Him. Third, there are times that He chastens those whom he loves. He cooks us in the fire of chastening. It’s not easy to go through learning experiences, and it’s not easy to stand a test and make an A+, and it’s not easy to endure a wood-shed experience. But everything in life that is happening to us is for our benefit. We need to keep the right attitude and let it teach us how to obey God and trust His Word. Faith is our belief, our doctrine. Trust is one step above faith. It is the application of our faith. You can have a lot of knowledge, but if you don’t have the wisdom to use it, and if you don’t take that leap of trust to apply it, you’ will always be one step behind. Stop complaining of the things in life that bother you and learn how to gain from them by learning, by making an A+, and by enduring. You’ll be smarter than the average bear.

    January 18th

There are three Worms that eat away at any and every human being on earth. In I John 2:16 we discover what those three worms are: For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. In this verse the lust of the flesh is related to our moral behavior. Do we get our moral value system from the Bible or from the world? The lust of the eyes has to do with our envy and greed for materialistic things rather than for Spiritual attributes in Christ. The pride of life is our self-adoration of our achievements in life, our good looks, our intelligence, our education, and so on. The truth is; If God had not given us life we would never have had the opportunity to be good or bad, desire the things of this world, or be full of pride and self-gratification. Flesh has nothing to boast of, although, we should have a certain amount of pride in ourselves if we are decent people, not greedy but giving, and realizing that if it were not for our Heavenly Father, our pusillanimous existence would be nothing at all. Jesus is the reason for every season; so exalt Him in your life today and let Him exalt you in due season. You have power in Christ today to fulfill His will, even if you feel inadequate, incapable, and uneducated. Greater is He that is within you…Amen!

    January 19th

I am constantly teasing my secretary and everyone in the office. When I tease them, they will say to me: You worm! In the Bible THE WORM is a symbol of our fallen nature, carnal nature, and earthy nature. This nature never changes until resurrection. It coincides with the locust, canker worm, palmer worm, caterpillar; all which has to do with lust of the flesh, lust of the eye, pride of life, plus greed of power. While our spirit (spirit of man, i.e., life within) is born again, our soul (mind, will, emotions) is BEING born again through the process of the divine challenge of our will, pitted against God’s will. As long as there is flesh, that worm of rebellion will exist and demonstrate itself in a variety of ways. While God is working on our soul (mind, will, emotions) we must recognize that coming to full stature in Christ is an ongoing process of learning, testing, and chastening. However, we have great hope because of God’s plan. That hope in my opinion is the resurrection; when Christ who is our life shall appear in a dimension of life and glory that we cannot comprehend at present. You’ve heard the expression, Tie a knot in the end of the rope and hold on. Well, our knot is Jesus, and we hold on to Him until His work in our life is done and we see Him in His full glory along with all the blessed saints who have gone before us.

Peter saw Jesus walking on the turbulent water and he wanted to do the same. However, Peter’s faith was not yet complete and when he looked at the turbulence beneath him, he began to sink. He cried, Lord, help me! Getting Jesus into the boat with you will calm the troubled waters of your life. The ship of course is God’s Word that we ride in until Jesus decides to come and stop the turbulence. Don’t rush Him by telling Him when & how to stop the turbulence of your life. Just learn how to ride out the storm by praising Him for whatever is going on until He decides to calm your sea. The Bible is sixty-six books of instructions. There is a verse or a story somewhere in God’s Word that will fit your circumstances and need, comfort your heart and bring peace of mind. But sometimes you have to search for it. Jesus will help you. You can’t push God into doing what you think needs to be done and when He ought to do it. This is because of His sovereignty. The hardest thing to do is to wait on the Lord’s timing. Let Jesus be Jesus for His way is always the best way. The Bible says in Isa. 40:31, But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.

It is important to know that God is love. His love is for all of His creation and it is unconditional. Since God created all things, He has no needs that He can’t produce or reproduce with His spoken word. However, what if God needed love in return in order to feel complete? Not to survive, but to be complete? Why else would He create mankind? He knew the depravity that mankind would come to; depraved and needing a Savior. It is through that Savior we learn how to love God unconditionally. I believe that God needs unconditional love in return for His unconditional love toward His creation, otherwise why restitution? Why would He command us to …love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might… (Deut. 6:5, 11:1,3,22, 13:3). None of creation has the ability to love God unconditionally except human beings. And human beings cannot love God without His love first to embrace us, teach us, transform us, and accept us as we are until those changes transpire, II Cor. 3:18. Coming to maturity in Christ is coming to a place where it matters not if God answers our prayers, or meets our current need. Even if we do not feel His presence, we just love Him anyway. Human love demands affection, happiness, material things, etc.; but divine love is unconditional. God loves us the same, even if we don’t love Him back.
